Steam requires your store country to reflect where you currently live and warns that using another region to evade restrictions can lead to account restrictions or a lock. If you have genuinely moved or are staying abroad for an extended period, you can request a store-country change through checkout using a payment method from your new country.
What Steam means by your store country
Steam associates your store country with the location of your first Steam purchase. You can check the current setting under Account Details. Steam says the store country must match the country where you currently reside; using another country’s store to get different prices or evade content restrictions is forbidden. Steam warns that accounts showing this behavior, or clearly associated with it, may be locked. See Steam Support’s currency-mismatch guidance.

Travel or relocation: which applies?
| Situation | What to do |

| Temporary travel | Keep your existing store country. Steam says the store continues to show prices in that country; use a payment method that matches the store country. |
| Moved or living abroad for an extended period | You may select the new country while viewing your cart or completing a purchase, then pay with a method from that country. Steam limits country changes to once every three months. |
These rules are described in Steam Support’s Steam Store Country FAQ. The change is for a genuine change in residence, not a workaround for regional prices or availability.
How to change your store country after moving
- Sign in to Steam and open Account Details to check your current store country.
- Add an item to your cart and proceed to view the cart or complete the purchase.
- Select your new country when Steam offers the country update option.
- Complete the purchase using a payment method issued for your new country.
Steam says you can update the country once every three months. If the new-country option does not appear or your purchase cannot be completed, contact Steam Support rather than trying to disguise your location.

If a purchase fails while you’re traveling
- Check that the store still shows your existing country and that your payment method matches that country.
- Disable or remove proxy or VPN software and try again. Steam says transactions initiated through anonymous proxies will be declined.
- If the error remains, contact Steam Support and include the exact error details. Steam’s Purchasing Issues FAQ covers purchase troubleshooting.
Wallet codes, gifts, and retail keys are not region-change tools
Steam Wallet codes and CD keys cannot change your store-country setting. If you cannot complete a purchase, contact Steam Support; buying a code or key does not update the country on your account.
Also distinguish store purchases from gifts and third-party retail keys. Steam says most games bought directly through its store are not region restricted, but gifts may be restricted and retail-key restrictions vary by publisher. Check gift details for restrictions and ask the publisher or retailer about a key before buying.

Why a VPN won’t unlock a restricted gift
Steam says using a proxy or VPN to disguise your location to redeem a region-restricted gift is strictly against its Terms of Service and may result in account restrictions. Steam also says it cannot remove region restrictions. Check the gift’s details before accepting it; do not try to change your apparent location to redeem it.
