You cannot freely choose a Steam currency region. If you have moved abroad or now live in another country for an extended period, change your Steam store country through checkout while located there, using a payment method from that country. Steam updates the account country after the purchase; changes are limited to once every three months. Your store country must match where you currently reside. Change your store country after moving
Steam ties store country and regional pricing to where you live, not to a currency preference. The country associated with your account is based on the location of your first purchase, and you can check the current setting under Account Details.
- Move to, or begin living for an extended period in, the country you want to use. It should be your current country of residence.
- While physically located there, add an item to your cart and proceed to checkout.
- If Steam offers a country selector because your location differs from your existing store country, select the country where you now reside. Steam says the cart, prices, and available payment options will update.
- Complete the purchase using a payment method from that country. Steam says the purchase updates your account’s store country.
- Open Account Details and check the store country shown there.
You can change the store country only once every three months. If you regularly spend time in more than one country, Steam recommends using your primary country of residence and paying with a method that matches the account’s store country while travelling.
If you are travelling rather than moving
Existing Steam account
Temporary travel does not make another country or currency a selectable option. Your existing store country remains relevant; Steam advises using a payment method that matches it. If you see a currency mismatch, Steam suggests trying the payment instrument without Steam Wallet funds. If a link opened a page for another region, try opening the store in the Steam application. New Steam user
If you are new to Steam and travelling, Steam says you cannot temporarily set your store country to make purchases. Return to your country of residence to set it.
What will not change your Steam region
Steam Wallet Codes and Steam-compatible CD keys do not change your store country. A local payment method is part of Steam’s country-change process; payment options available in a country appear during checkout. Neither a different currency nor a different country is a legitimate workaround.

Steam forbids using another region’s store to bypass regional pricing or content restrictions, and accounts displaying that behavior may be locked. Do not use a VPN or proxy to change regions. Steam’s Region Restrictions on Steam covers restrictions on purchases, gifts, and third-party keys.
Troubleshoot a failed purchase
- Confirm you selected the country where you currently reside and are using a payment method that matches the relevant store country.
- If you are travelling and encounter a currency mismatch, try the payment instrument without Steam Wallet funds, or open the store through the Steam application instead of a link to another region.
- For a purchase issue, Steam’s Purchasing Issues guidance advises disabling proxy or VPN software and trying the Steam website or client. If the error continues, contact Steam Support and provide the exact error message.
Why Steam currencies and prices vary by region
Steam determines prices and payment options by region; a store country is not simply a currency setting. As dated context, Steam announced that Argentina and Turkey would move to USD pricing through new LATAM-USD and MENA-USD pricing regions beginning November 20, 2023, citing exchange-rate volatility and difficulties keeping payment methods operational.
