To change your Steam store country, you must genuinely be located in the new country and complete a purchase using a payment method from that country. Steam may show the country selector in the cart or during checkout when it detects that your location differs from the account’s current store country. Steam limits country changes to once every three months.
Do not use a VPN, proxy, false billing address, borrowed payment method, or foreign payment instrument to obtain cheaper regional pricing. Valve prohibits disguising your residence to bypass geographical restrictions or pricing that does not apply to your geography, and says this can lead to account termination. Steam does not provide a freely editable region switch for moving between arbitrary countries. The supported process is tied to a real change of residence or an extended stay: Steam detects your location, offers a country change in the cart or checkout when eligible, and updates the account after you pay with a payment method from the new country.

The word region is commonly used for several different Steam settings. Changing the wrong one will not solve the problem you have.

Your store country controls the storefront and checkout context. Your download region only selects a content server, and a gift or key can have a separate territory restriction.
What you need before changing your store country
- A genuine move or extended stay: The target country should be where you currently reside. If you regularly spend time in several countries, Steam recommends using your primary residence.
- An eligible local payment method: You must be able to pay with a method from the new country. Steam does not guarantee that every card, digital wallet, prepaid card, or PayPal account will qualify.
- Accurate billing information: Your billing street address and ZIP or postal code must match the records held by your bank or card issuer.
- No recent country change: Steam’s current support documentation says the store country can be changed only once every three months.
- No VPN or proxy: Use your normal connection from the country where you actually are. A VPN is not a supported country-change method.
Do not enter a random local address or use somebody else’s payment method. Steam says incorrect billing information can fail address verification and that it will not force through a transaction with false or mismatched address details. See Steam’s billing-address guidance.
How to change your Steam region: the six-step tutorial
1. Confirm that you need to change the store country
If your goal is different prices, local payment methods, or the pricing and checkout treatment for your new residence, continue with a store-country change. If you are only visiting another country, you normally should not change it. Steam says travelers generally continue to see their home-country store and can purchase as if they were at home.

If you created a new Steam account while traveling, Steam says you cannot temporarily set the account to the travel country and then switch it back. You need to return to your country of residence before setting the appropriate store country.
If your goal is faster downloads instead, skip this process and follow the download-region instructions later in this guide.
2. Make sure the change is legitimate and possible
Before opening checkout, confirm that you are physically in the target country or have moved there, have a local payment method, and can provide its real billing details. Also check that you have not changed the country during the last three months.
Valve’s agreement prohibits using IP proxying or another method to disguise your place of residence in order to bypass geographical restrictions or obtain pricing that does not apply to your geography. This is why a VPN-based price switch is not merely unreliable; it is against the account terms. The Subscriber Agreement page is marked as revised April 20, 2026.
3. Check your current Steam store country
- Sign in to Steam.
- Open the menu showing your profile name in the upper-right corner.
- Select Account Details.
- Find the current store-country information on the account page.
You can also open Steam Account Details directly after signing in.
This page is useful for confirming the starting country and verifying the result later. Do not treat a public profile location, interface language, or download-region setting as the store-country control. Valve’s documented process is completed during an eligible purchase; changing a profile field alone is not enough.
4. Add a paid item to your Steam cart
- Open the Steam Store while you are in the target country.
- Add a paid game, DLC, software product, or another paid item to your cart.
- Open the cart and proceed toward checkout.
The purchase is important because Steam says the store-country update happens when you complete a purchase with a payment method from the new country. Merely browsing another storefront does not complete the change.
Do not assume that a free product, a Steam Wallet Code, or a CD key will trigger the update. Valve explicitly says that Wallet Codes and CD keys cannot be used to change the store country.

5. Select the new country when Steam offers it, then review checkout
Steam may show a country or store-country selector in the cart or during checkout if your current location differs from the account’s store country. If it appears:
- Select the country where you currently reside.
- Wait for the cart to refresh.
- Check the displayed prices, currency or regional pricing, tax treatment, and available payment methods.
- Enter your real billing information.
- Select a payment method issued or based in the target country.
The selector is not guaranteed to appear in exactly the same place in every version of the Steam client or website. If Steam does not offer it, do not force the transaction with a VPN, false address, or mismatched card. Use the troubleshooting steps below instead.
If you have Steam Wallet funds, review the payment selection carefully. Steam says Wallet funds are normally used first unless you change the selected payment method at the confirmation stage. Do not assume that an existing wallet balance automatically converts, transfers, or qualifies as the required local payment method in every country-change scenario; Valve does not publish one universal rule covering every balance and currency combination.
6. Complete the purchase and verify the change
- Complete the purchase with the eligible payment method from the new country.
- Return to Account Details.
- Confirm that the store country has changed.
- At a later checkout, verify the country, displayed pricing region or currency, and available payment methods.
Steam says the account country is updated after the purchase is completed with a payment method from the new country. Because the limit is once every three months, confirm that the change is correct before completing it.
If you only want faster Steam downloads
A download-region change is separate from a store-country change and does not alter your prices, currency, payment methods, or account residence.
- Open the Steam client.
- Select Steam > Settings.
- Open Downloads.
- Choose a different Download region.
- Prefer the region where you are located or the closest suitable available region.
Valve describes this setting as a choice of content server. It may help with download performance, but it is not a way to change the account’s store country. See Steam’s content-server and download-region guidance.
Why the country selector may be missing
If Steam does not offer the country change, work through these checks in order:
- Confirm your physical location. You need to be in the target country rather than merely viewing its storefront.
- Check the payment method’s country. A card or payment account from the old country may not satisfy the requirement.
- Correct the billing information. The street address and ZIP or postal code must match the card issuer’s records exactly.
- Check the three-month restriction. Steam does not allow another store-country change until the applicable period has passed.
- Disable VPN and proxy software. Steam’s purchase troubleshooting guidance recommends disabling or removing these tools when a transaction fails.
- Try the other Steam interface. If you attempted the purchase in the desktop client, try the Steam website; if you used the website, try the client.
- Restart Steam and retry once the information is correct. Do not repeatedly cycle through random countries, addresses, or payment cards.
- Contact Steam Support. If you have genuinely moved and your location, payment method, and billing details are correct, use Steam Support rather than a third-party region-changing service.
Steam does not publish a universal guaranteed delay measured in hours, days, or weeks for every account update. Avoid guides that promise a fixed processing time or recommend repeatedly manipulating account signals.

Incorrect billing address
Enter the billing address held by the bank or card issuer, including the correct street format and ZIP or postal code. Steam says it will not force a transaction that fails address verification, even if the bank displays a temporary pending authorization. A pending authorization is not confirmation that the store-country change completed.
The card is from the old country
The supported process requires a payment method from the new country. Do not try to disguise an old-country card with a new address. Ask your bank or payment provider whether the method is actually issued and billed in the target country, then use the exact billing details they have on file.
Steam Wallet funds are selected
Review the final payment screen. Wallet funds are normally used first, but Steam allows the selected payment method to be changed at confirmation. If the country change depends on a local payment method, make sure the local method is selected and that the checkout actually completes through the required payment flow.

Wallet Codes do not change the account country. Steam says a Wallet Code redeems into the currency of the account’s existing Steam Wallet regardless of where the code was purchased. See the Wallet Code redemption page and Steam Wallet FAQ.

It can affect
- The storefront’s regional pricing.
- The currency or pricing system shown at checkout.
- Available local payment methods.
- Checkout and applicable tax treatment.
- Some country-specific store availability.
Do not assume that every country has a unique national currency on Steam. Steam sometimes uses regional USD pricing rather than a separate local currency. For example, Valve moved Argentina and Turkey to USD pricing regions beginning November 20, 2023. Pricing systems can change, so verify the actual currency and price displayed in your cart instead of relying on a country’s former currency. See Valve’s regional pricing announcement.
It does not automatically
- Change the Steam download server.
- Remove a game’s gift, CD-key, or product-specific region restriction.
- Make a third-party key valid in a territory where it was not sold for activation.
- Make a restricted gift redeemable.
- Authorize VPN-based price switching.
- Guarantee a particular national currency.
Store-country changes versus region-locked games, gifts, and keys
Store-country settings and product restrictions are separate. Steam says most products bought directly from the Steam Store do not have region restrictions, but individual products and gifts can have restrictions. Therefore, changing your account country is primarily a store and purchasing change, not a guaranteed way to unlock every item associated with another territory.
If a third-party CD key displays Game not available in your territory, Steam directs you to contact the retailer. Steam does not refund third-party CD keys. Steam Support also says it cannot modify or remove product restrictions. Check the relevant restrictions before buying rather than assuming a later country change will fix the key.
For gifts, the sender’s country, recipient’s country, and the product’s rules can affect redeemability. Steam’s gift and regional-restriction guidance applies independently of the store-country procedure.
Traveling, multiple residences, and special cases
Changing country while on vacation
Usually, do not change the store country for a holiday or short trip. Steam says the store normally continues to show your home-country prices and permits purchases as if you were at home while traveling.
Living in or regularly visiting multiple countries
Steam recommends selecting your primary residence. Repeatedly switching between countries is impractical because Steam limits changes to once every three months, and purchases should use a payment method matching the current store country.
Military APO or FPO addresses
Steam documents an exception for users serving abroad: during checkout, the store country can be updated to the United States using a United States payment method. Steam also notes that physical hardware cannot currently be shipped to APO or FPO addresses. Consult the official Store Country FAQ for the applicable details.

A VPN can make a website see a different IP address temporarily, but that does not make the residence, billing information, or payment method legitimate. Valve’s Subscriber Agreement specifically prohibits IP proxying and other methods used to disguise residence to bypass geographical restrictions or obtain pricing that does not apply to the user’s geography. Valve says it may terminate an account for this conduct.

Steam also recommends disabling or removing VPN or proxy software when troubleshooting failed purchases. The safe approach is to use the store country of your actual residence, an eligible payment method from that country, and accurate billing details.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I change my Steam country without moving?
No supported method exists for changing the store country solely to access cheaper prices or another country’s content. Steam says the store country should match the country where you currently reside, and Valve prohibits disguising residence to obtain pricing or content unavailable in your geography.

Can I change my Steam region while traveling?
Usually you should leave the store country set to your home country. Steam says it normally continues to show your home-country store while you travel. A new account created while traveling cannot be temporarily set to the travel country and then switched back.
Does a VPN change my Steam store country?
A VPN may temporarily change the IP address a website sees, but it is not the supported country-change process. Using IP proxying to disguise residence for regional pricing or geographical restrictions violates Valve’s Subscriber Agreement and may put the account at risk.
Can Steam Wallet Codes change my country?
No. Steam explicitly says Wallet Codes and CD keys cannot change the store country. A Wallet Code redeems into the currency of the account’s existing Steam Wallet, regardless of where the code was purchased.
How often can I change my Steam store country?
Steam’s current support page says the store country can be changed once every three months. Valve does not state that this should be interpreted as exactly 90 days or 12 weeks.
Will changing my store country remove games from my library?

The billing street address and ZIP or postal code may not match the card issuer’s records, or the payment method may not be from the target country. Correct the information rather than using a random address. Steam will not force a transaction that fails address verification.
Will changing country give me the target country’s currency?
Not necessarily. Steam applies the pricing region and payment options associated with the selected country, but some countries use regional USD pricing instead of a separate national currency. Check the actual currency and price in the cart.
Will changing my store country unlock a region-locked key or gift?
Not necessarily. Product restrictions are separate from the store-country setting, and Steam Support says it cannot remove them. For a restricted third-party CD key, contact the retailer; Steam does not refund third-party keys.

If you only need a different download server, change Steam > Settings > Downloads > Download region instead. For a genuine move that still will not process, contact Steam Support—not a VPN or third-party region changer.
