You can choose an available gamerpic in the Windows Xbox app, or upload your own image through an Xbox console. The console upload steps reproduced from Xbox Support use a JPG or PNG file stored on a USB device or available through OneDrive. Custom images are subject to eligibility and review, so they may not appear immediately.
Choose a built-in gamerpic in the Windows Xbox app
A gamerpic is the profile picture shown beside your Xbox gamertag. You can select an image from the available options without uploading a file.

- Open the Xbox app and select your profile avatar.
- Choose View profile.
- Select the edit control on your gamerpic.
- Choose an available picture, then save your change.
These menu labels come from instructions for Xbox app version 2112.1001.10.0 on Windows 10 and Windows 11; wording may differ in a newer version. The instructions describe selecting an existing image, not uploading a custom one. Microsoft Q&A instructions also note that synchronization can take time.
Upload a custom gamerpic from an Xbox console
The following console procedure is reproduced in a Microsoft Community reply as Xbox Support guidance. The original support page’s instructions were not accessible in the material available for this article, so menu labels may differ after system updates.

- Copy the image to a USB device, or make it available through OneDrive on the console. The reproduced instructions specify a JPG or PNG file.
- Press the Xbox button on your controller to open the guide.
- Select Profile & system, choose your profile, then open My profile.
- Choose Customize profile, then Change gamerpic.
- Select Upload a custom image, choose the file, and select Upload.
These steps and file types are reproduced in a Microsoft Community reply dated November 5, 2020. It says custom images are available only to adult Microsoft accounts. The current official Xbox Support page may provide updated labels or instructions.
What to expect after uploading
A custom gamerpic may take a while to appear because Xbox checks whether the image is acceptable. The reproduced support text says an image that is not accepted can revert to the previous gamerpic or avatar; it does not give a guaranteed review time. Xbox’s Player Image Upload Infographic also depicts safety scans for uploaded profile images.

If you cannot find the custom-upload option
- Check whether the account is eligible: the reproduced support note limits custom images to adult Microsoft accounts.
- Confirm that the image is available to the console on a USB device or through OneDrive, and that it is a JPG or PNG.
- Use the console route above rather than relying on PC or mobile upload instructions. Available guidance about custom uploads in other apps is inconsistent, and a current mobile procedure is not established here.
These steps do not establish a complete set of current family-setting or account troubleshooting instructions. Image dimensions, file-size limits, and the full set of account restrictions are likewise not confirmed here.
