Pratte’s estimate concerns how many were handed out; the later “at least 41 known” claim concerns reported examples by a particular date. Neither establishes a definitive total of surviving cards. PSA’s article quotes Pratte: “Realistically, the actual award number produced is not going to reflect the number that’s going to be available for sale.”
Does PSA’s population tell us how many exist?
No. PSA’s population records describe cards submitted to and recorded by PSA, not every card distributed or every surviving copy. A card outside PSA’s records may still exist, and a grading population is not a census of the entire issue. PSA’s certification page lets readers check an individual certified item and access population-report information; an individual certification record does not establish the full distribution or survivor count.

Does “only one” mean only one Pikachu Illustrator card exists?
No. Guinness describes the card sold at auction on 16 February 2026 as the only known PSA Gem Mint 10 copy. That is a grade-specific claim, not a claim that only one Pikachu Illustrator exists. The auctioned card sold through Goldin Auctions for $16,492,000, according to Guinness World Records.

What count should readers use?
For the reported original distribution, use 39, attributed to Guinness World Records. For copies said to be known at a particular point, preserve the source and date: Bulbapedia’s claim was at least 41 by August 2020. For PSA records, say “PSA population,” not “surviving cards.” These measures have different denominators, and none of the cited figures establishes a definitive count of copies that exist today.
