This works only when the experience supports chat and chat is available to your account. To message friends outside an experience, use Roblox’s Chat area. Voice Chat is a separate, optional feature with its own eligibility rules.
How to open text chat in a Roblox experience
- Join an experience that has chat enabled.
- Open the chat bar: press / on a keyboard, or tap the chat icon at the top left of the screen.
- Type your message and press Enter or Return to send it.
If the slash key does not open chat on an international keyboard, Roblox suggests trying the backslash key. Experience chat ends when you leave that experience. If chat is unavailable, the experience may not support it, the account may not be eligible, or an account setting may restrict it.
How to chat with friends outside a game
On a phone or tablet
Open the Chat tab to continue an existing conversation. To start one, use the plus button and select friends.
On a computer
Open the chat area in the lower-right corner of the Roblox browser interface. Roblox is renaming the Party tab to Chat by region, so the label may differ while that change rolls out. The friend-chat interface and in-experience chat are separate places to communicate.

Turn on or troubleshoot experience chat
For personal accounts, the current settings path is Settings → Privacy & content restrictions → Communication → Experience chat. For a parent-linked account, Roblox lists Settings → Parental Controls → Settings You Manage → Communication → Experience chat. Menu labels can change; if these paths do not match what you see, look under the account’s current Communication controls.
Roblox’s current “How to chat on Roblox” instructions say an account must successfully complete an age check to access Communication features. They specify parental consent for users aged 5–9 to enable Experience chat. Regional restrictions may also apply.

Roblox’s help pages do not give one consistent consent threshold for every kind of chat. Its Parental Controls Overview describes different thresholds for game chat and game direct chat, and the Friends Chat page has feature-specific guidance. Check the current controls for the particular account and feature rather than applying one age rule to all chat.
- No chat icon or chat bar: the experience may not have chat enabled, or chat may not be available to the account.
- Setting appears unavailable: check whether the account has completed an age check and whether parental consent or regional limits apply.
- Message appears as hashtags: Roblox says this means its filters blocked the word or phrase. Try wording the message differently; do not attempt to share personal information.
How Voice Chat differs from text chat
Voice Chat is optional and separate from both experience text chat and friend text conversations. Roblox says eligible users must be at least 13, complete an age check, and opt in. Phone verification alone does not unlock Voice Chat under Roblox’s stated updates.

In an experience that supports Voice Chat, use the headphone icon or the in-experience settings toggle to connect. Developers decide whether to integrate the feature, and availability may also depend on region. Roblox lists desktop, mobile, VR, PlayStation, and Xbox as supported platforms; a microphone icon lets you mute or unmute. A headset is optional—Roblox does not require one, and built-in device audio may be enough.

Roblox says filtered chat blocks inappropriate content and personal information. Account owners can limit or disable who can chat or message them, follow them into games, or invite them to private servers. In an experience conversation, you can block or mute a user and report a message that violates Roblox’s rules. Parents can manage communication controls through Parental Controls.

For broader context on age-based chat, Roblox’s January 7, 2026 newsroom article says the feature is designed to prevent children under 16 from communicating with adults (translated from the French-language page). The same article reported that, in Australia, New Zealand, and the Netherlands—where age checks for chat had been required since early December—more than 50% of daily active users had completed the process. That figure applies only to those three rollout markets.
