You can start a Roblox chat without opening someone’s profile. On mobile, use the Chat tab (or Party, depending on your account and region) and tap + to find a friend. On desktop, use the chat box and friend list in the lower-right corner. If you’re already in an eligible experience, Roblox also supports Direct chat with /w.
Start a new chat from the Roblox home screen
The Chat/Party route is the clearest way to begin a one-to-one conversation without visiting a profile.
On a phone or tablet
- From the Roblox home screen, tap Chat at the bottom. Some accounts may still show Party while the Chat tab name rolls out by region.
- Tap + to start a new chat.
- Search for and select the friend, then enter your message.
Roblox describes this workflow in its instructions for messaging and chatting with friends.
On desktop web
- Click the gray chat box in the lower-right corner.
- Find the person in the friends or chat list, using search if needed.
- Select them in the list and type in the message box.
You can do this from the chat interface without opening the person’s profile page.

- Each gift card grants a free virtual item upon redemption.
Start Direct chat while you’re in an experience
If you’re already playing an experience, Roblox documents the /w command for Direct chat. Its availability depends on your eligibility and the experience’s chat settings. See Roblox’s Experience Chat guidance for the current instructions. Use the command as Roblox documents it in the interface; this route is for someone already in an experience, rather than the general way to create a new chat from home.
Why the chat option might be unavailable
Roblox communication access depends on age check, age group, account communication settings, and region. Account menus can vary as features roll out; communication controls are found under paths such as Settings > Privacy & content restrictions > Communication, with related parental controls available to parents.

A one-to-one chat is private in the sense that you are messaging a selected person rather than posting publicly. It does not bypass Roblox’s rules, safety filtering, or communication settings. Roblox provides controls to restrict or disable who can chat with an account or send it messages; see Safety Features: Chat, Privacy & Filtering.
