To check a game’s player-facing version, look in its main menu or settings first; the location varies by title, and some games do not display a version number. For Steam’s update status, open the game’s Library page and check Properties > Updates or the Download Manager. A Steam build identifier is not necessarily the same as the version shown in the game.
Find the version number inside the game
Launch the game and check its title screen, main menu, settings, or About section. Developers choose where—or whether—to show a player-facing version label, so there is no universal location. If you need to compare your version with a patch note or another player’s, this in-game label is usually the most relevant one.

Check Steam’s update and build information
- Open Library in Steam and select the game.
- Click the gear icon or open the game’s Manage menu, then choose Properties.
- Select Updates to see the game’s automatic update settings and any build-related information available there.
Steam documents Properties > Updates as the place for per-game update settings, but the information shown should not be treated as a guaranteed player-facing version number. Check whether an update is waiting or has finished
Open Steam’s Download Manager to review active downloads and completed updates. If you want Steam to apply an available update before playing, launching the game can trigger it immediately. The Updates tab’s automatic-update setting alone does not confirm which version is currently installed. Steam Support explains update settings, downloads, and launch-triggered updates.

Use file checks only when troubleshooting
Verify installed game files
To check whether Steam’s installed files are correct, open the game’s Properties > Installed Files and select Verify integrity of game files. This is a repair and troubleshooting check, not a general version-number lookup. Inspect executable metadata on Windows
If you need exact file metadata, right-click the game’s executable in Windows, open Properties, and check the Details tab for a file version.
