How to Check and Reduce Disk Usage on a WordPress Site

A practical, recovery-first guide to measuring WordPress storage, finding hidden account usage, and freeing space without breaking media, plugins, themes, or database data.

Start with measurement, not deletion. In WordPress, open Tools → Site Health → Info → Directories and Sizes to see the space used by core, uploads, plugins, themes, the database, and the complete installation. Then compare those figures with your hosting account’s disk-usage report, because the host may also count backups, logs, mailboxes, staging copies, or other sites. Remove or archive only data you have identified and can recover, and verify the quota again after every cleanup group.

What WordPress disk usage actually measures

“Disk usage” can describe two different totals. WordPress reports the size of its own installation, while a hosting control panel normally reports the entire account or subscription. Those numbers can differ substantially even when the WordPress files are healthy.

The WordPress installation total

WordPress Site Health separates the installation into the WordPress directory, wp-content/uploads, themes, plugins, the database, and a total installation size. The official Site Health documentation describes the feature this way: “The Directories and Sizes section shows you all the information about where the different elements of your WordPress installation are located and what size those directories are.”

WordPress core also has a get_space_used() function. Unless another filter changes its behavior, it calculates space from the uploads directory returned by wp_upload_dir(), using get_dirsize(). That makes the value useful for understanding media consumption, but it is not automatically a complete accounting of every file on a hosting account.

The hosting-account total

Your host’s quota is the authority for whether the account is full. Depending on the plan, it can include website files, database files, server and PHP logs, locally stored backups, email, staging environments, inode usage, and additional sites under the same account. A WordPress cleanup can therefore reduce the installation total without immediately changing the quota shown by the host.

Why a full quota stops uploads

On multisite, WordPress checks the remaining quota and the configured maximum file size before accepting an upload. The check_upload_size() logic can reject an upload when the quota is exhausted, even if the individual file is below the configured maximum. An upload error in that situation is a capacity problem first, not necessarily a permissions or media-format problem.

Prepare a recoverable baseline before deleting anything

Do not begin in File Manager with a large delete selection. Establish what can be restored and where the space is going.

  1. Record the host figure. Write down the current disk usage, quota, database size, and any inode figure shown by the host.
  2. Make a recoverable backup. Keep a copy of the database and files outside the hosting account or in a separately retained backup location. Confirm that the backup can actually be downloaded and identified before removing its hosted copy.
  3. Capture the largest locations. Note the largest directories and database tables from the host report or a read-only analyzer. A read-only view is preferable because it reveals candidates without changing production data.
  4. Choose a rollback point. If the site is important, test the backup or maintain a staging copy before changing media, plugin files, themes, or database records.

This baseline gives you a before-and-after comparison and prevents a cleanup from becoming an unplanned outage.

Check WordPress’s built-in size report

  1. Sign in to the WordPress dashboard with an account that can view Site Health.
  2. Go to Tools → Site Health.
  3. Open the Info tab.
  4. Expand Directories and Sizes.
  5. Record the values for the WordPress directory, themes, plugins, uploads, database, and total installation.

Pay attention to which category is dominant. A large uploads figure points to media and generated image sizes; a large plugins or themes figure points to retained packages or plugin-created folders; a large database figure calls for table-level investigation. Site Health is an inventory, not a delete button, so use it to decide where to inspect next.

Reconcile Site Health with the host’s disk report

Open the storage, disk-usage, or account-usage screen supplied by your host and compare its total with the Site Health total. The host report should determine whether the quota problem is resolved.

Observation Likely explanation Next check
Site Health and the host show similar totals Most account space is inside this WordPress installation. Drill into wp-content, uploads, the database, and retained plugin or theme files.
The host total is much larger Backups, logs, mailboxes, staging copies, another site, or account-level files are being counted. Use the host’s directory breakdown and inspect non-WordPress areas before changing production files.
WordPress reports a high uploads value but the host quota barely changes after media cleanup Other account data is consuming the quota, or deleted files are still held in a backup or trash area. Refresh the host report and inspect backups, snapshots, logs, and mail storage.
Uploads fail while the WordPress total appears modest The account quota, multisite quota, or inode limit may be exhausted. Check account-level storage, inode usage, and multisite allocation with the host.

Do not assume that a dashboard number updates instantly. Refresh the report after a cleanup and allow the host’s accounting system time to recalculate.

Drill into wp-content safely

Most practical investigations move from the high-level report into wp-content. Inspect rather than delete, and identify the owner and purpose of each large directory.

Uploads organized by year and month

Standard WordPress media is usually arranged under year and month folders. Sort directories by size and open unusually large periods. Look for original camera files, duplicate imports, video files, and image-size variants generated by themes or plugins. A large folder is not proof that its files are unused: an image may be referenced in an old post, a custom field, a stylesheet, or an external feed.

Locally stored backup archives

Backup plugins and migration tools can leave compressed archives inside the hosting account. Keep the number of retained copies that your recovery policy requires, then move older recoverable archives to storage outside the account. An external hard drive can serve as an archive destination for unused media and backup files, but it is not a substitute for a tested backup plan. Keep at least one backup in a separate physical or cloud location and periodically verify that it can be restored.

Cache directories

Page caches, object caches, minified assets, and temporary export folders can grow rapidly. Clear them through the plugin or host interface when possible, because those controls understand the plugin’s directory structure. Deleting an active cache directory by hand can cause errors or simply have the cache rebuilt immediately. Cache removal is normally reversible because the files are regenerated, but confirm that the site still serves pages and that logged-in, checkout, or personalized areas behave correctly afterward.

Debug and error logs

Large debug or PHP error logs may indicate a recurring fault rather than a one-time storage spike. Download a copy if you need it for diagnosis, then rotate or remove old logs using the host’s logging controls. Fix the underlying warning or fatal error; otherwise the log will refill and the apparent storage gain will disappear.

Staging copies and plugin-generated folders

A staging clone can contain a complete second uploads directory, database export, and backup set. Confirm whether the clone is still needed, whether it is covered by a separate retention policy, and whether it shares the same quota. Plugin-generated folders may hold exports, reports, thumbnails, or temporary work files. Identify the creating plugin before removing anything, and use its documented cleanup or retention setting when available.

Reduce media usage without breaking references

WordPress housekeeping documentation notes that many users upload graphics they never use and recommends moving unused images to a hard-drive folder when server space is limited. Treat that as an archiving workflow, not permission to remove files blindly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Confirm that a file is unused

  • Check the Media Library and the posts, pages, products, widgets, and templates that might reference the file.
  • Search theme and plugin settings for logos, background images, icons, downloadable files, and custom field values.
  • Check responsive image variants and WebP or other generated copies; deleting only one variant can leave broken srcsets or cause repeated regeneration.
  • Review redirects, feeds, newsletters, and external documents that may link directly to the file URL.

When a file is genuinely obsolete, retain a copy outside the host if it has historical or legal value. If it is merely duplicated, keep the canonical version and update every known reference before removing the duplicate.

Do not expect compression to solve every media problem

Compression can reduce the size of new assets, but it does not automatically remove existing originals or duplicate derivatives. WordPress.com’s storage documentation states that Brotli compression applies to CSS, HTML, and JavaScript, not images. Image storage therefore still depends on the files and generated sizes you retain. Review the media-generation settings of your active theme and plugins so future uploads do not create unnecessary variants.

Remove inactive plugins and themes only after dependency checks

Deactivating an extension stops its runtime code but usually leaves its files and database data in place. To reclaim file space, remove an inactive plugin through WordPress only after confirming that:

  • the site does not need it for a scheduled task, import, security rule, or integration;
  • a child theme does not depend on the theme you plan to remove;
  • you have a rollback copy or a tested staging environment;
  • the plugin’s uninstall behavior is understood, especially if it removes settings or custom tables.

Keep a known-good fallback theme. WordPress can need an available default theme during troubleshooting, even when the site normally runs a custom theme. Delete abandoned theme and plugin directories through the dashboard where possible, then inspect for leftover uploads, caches, logs, exports, or database tables created by the extension.

Investigate database growth methodically

A database can accumulate overhead, revisions, expired transients, orphaned metadata, and tables left by removed plugins. There is no single safe SQL command for every WordPress site: table names, relationships, custom post types, and plugin behavior differ.

  1. Export a fresh database backup and label it with the date and site.
  2. Use the host’s database size view or a read-only analyzer to identify the largest tables.
  3. Map large tables to the plugin or feature that owns them before changing records.
  4. Review revisions, expired transients, orphaned metadata, and abandoned plugin tables as separate cleanup classes.
  5. Process one class at a time, then test the front end, dashboard, search, forms, scheduled jobs, and any commerce or membership functions.
  6. Recheck the database size and retain the pre-cleanup export until the site has operated normally.

Do not delete revisions simply because they are numerous if your editorial or recovery workflow relies on them. Likewise, do not remove a table solely because its plugin is inactive; some extensions expect their data when reactivated or upgraded.

Choose a remedy based on measured space and recovery needs

Remedy Best fit Benefits Risks or limits
Delete confirmed-unused media Uploads are the dominant, verified source. Direct and usually permanent reduction in file usage. A missed reference can create broken images or downloads; keep an archive when appropriate.
Move backups or media off-host Recoverable archives consume the account quota. Preserves files while releasing hosting capacity. External storage has its own cost, durability, access, and backup requirements.
Clear regenerated caches Cache or temporary folders are unusually large. Fast space recovery; files can normally be rebuilt. Incorrect manual deletion can disrupt a plugin, and the cache may refill.
Remove unused plugins or themes Retained packages or old extensions are large and no longer required. Reduces files and future maintenance surface. Dependencies, rollback plans, and uninstall data must be checked first.
Clean selected database data Specific tables contain disposable records or abandoned extension data. Reduces database storage and can improve manageability. Site-specific relationships make careless cleanup difficult to undo.
Add storage or move to a larger plan Required content already exceeds the current quota. Solves capacity without deleting needed files. It is a recurring cost and does not correct runaway logs, backups, or unused media.

WordPress.com documents a Storage Add-on for accounts that need more capacity. Availability, limits, and pricing depend on the service and region, so check the current plan details rather than assuming that an add-on changes how every host counts backups or email.

Verify the cleanup and troubleshoot a quota that remains full

  1. Refresh Site Health and record the revised category sizes.
  2. Refresh the host’s disk-usage report and compare it with the baseline.
  3. Visit the home page, several content types, search, forms, login, and any revenue-critical workflow.
  4. Check scheduled tasks, media processing, backups, and error logs for new failures.
  5. Keep the recovery copy until the site has passed this verification period.

If the host number did not fall

  • Inspect host-managed backups, snapshots, and trash or quarantine areas.
  • Check mailboxes and message attachments under the same account.
  • Review access, PHP, web-server, and debug logs for large retained files.
  • Look for a staging site, development clone, or another domain sharing the account.
  • Ask the host whether deleted files are held temporarily and whether inode limits are separate from byte limits.

If the WordPress installation is small but the account is full, further WordPress deletion is unlikely to solve the problem. Resolve the account-level source or choose additional managed storage after comparing its recurring cost with an external archive destination.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Multisite and shared-hosting considerations

In multisite, one network can contain many sites with separate upload paths and quota rules. Check the network’s configured upload limit and maximum file-size setting, then identify which site is consuming the shared uploads space. A single site’s cleanup may not restore enough network capacity if another site or a network-wide backup is responsible.

On shared hosting, confirm whether the quota covers multiple domains, databases, mailboxes, and staging environments. Keep the host’s account report as the final measurement even when individual WordPress dashboards show healthy totals.

Prevent the next storage emergency

  • Set a backup retention policy and store older copies outside the production account.
  • Review upload and image-generation settings when installing a theme or media plugin.
  • Schedule log rotation and investigate repeated errors instead of allowing logs to grow indefinitely.
  • Audit inactive plugins, themes, staging copies, and temporary exports on a regular cadence.
  • Record the host quota, database size, uploads size, and inode usage so growth is visible before uploads fail.
  • Test restoration from an external backup, not merely the existence of a backup file.

The safest pattern is consistent: measure the WordPress directories, reconcile them with the host quota, archive anything recoverable, remove only confirmed disposable data, and verify both the site and the account total after each change.
