In Minecraft: Java Edition, press F3 to open the debug overlay and read the FPS meter. In Java Edition 1.21.9, you can also press F3+F6 and choose Performance to keep the meter visible without leaving the full overlay open. Bedrock Edition controls vary by platform; the Java shortcuts are not Bedrock instructions.
Show the FPS counter in Java Edition
- Focus the Minecraft game window.
- Press F3 to open the debug overlay.
- Find the FPS meter in the overlay and read the displayed value.
Mojang’s Java Edition 1.21.9 release notes confirm that F3 opens the debug overlay.
Keep the FPS meter visible without the full overlay
In Java Edition 1.21.9, press F3+F6 to open Debug Options, then select Performance. This profile keeps the FPS meter visible when the debug overlay is closed, and the Debug Options state is saved between launches. Mojang says checking FPS through the Performance profile should not affect game performance; the developers note: “Now checking your FPS in the Performance profile should not affect game performance.”
Show FPS and TPS charts
In Java Edition versions supporting the documented shortcut, press F3+2 to toggle the FPS and TPS charts on the debug screen. Mojang documents this shortcut in the Java Edition 1.20.2 release notes. These are charts, not the persistent numeric FPS meter provided by the Performance profile in 1.21.9.

What about Bedrock Edition?
Do not use the Java Edition F3 shortcuts as Bedrock instructions. The reviewed official Bedrock troubleshooting page covers graphics troubleshooting and optimization, but does not document a universal built-in FPS counter or establish its availability across Windows, consoles, and mobile. For Bedrock, check documentation for your specific platform and game version; a single method for all Bedrock builds is not established by that source.
Which display should you use?
- Quick numeric reading: open the Java debug overlay with F3.
- FPS visible during play: use Debug Options and the Performance profile in Java Edition 1.21.9.
- Performance trend view: use F3+2 for the FPS/TPS charts in Java Edition 1.20.2 documentation.
These controls show FPS; they do not indicate what frame rate your computer should achieve. No expected FPS benchmark is established by the cited release notes.
