The most reliable way to check how much space a Steam game needs is to open its exact Steam Store page and read the Storage line under System Requirements. Then compare that figure with the free space on the specific drive where Steam will install the game—not with your computer’s total storage.

For games already linked to your Steam account, you can also select the uninstalled game in your Library and inspect its details or installation screen. Steam’s Library details can show the disk space required for an uninstalled game, although the precise wording and location may change as the client interface is updated.

Check the Storage requirement on the Steam Store page

  1. Open Steam or visit the Steam Store in a web browser.
  2. Search for the exact game title and open its official Store page.
  3. Scroll to System Requirements.
  4. Find the Storage entry under the operating system and configuration you intend to use.
  5. Compare that number with the available space on the Steam library drive.

Steam Support directs users to a game’s Store page for its system requirements. The Store page is therefore the best starting point when you have not yet purchased or installed the game.

  • Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
  • Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C

Check the correct operating-system section

Some games list separate requirements for Windows, macOS, Linux, or SteamOS. Read the section that matches your computer. A Windows requirement is not automatically a requirement for the macOS or Linux version, and availability can differ by platform.

Also confirm that you have opened the correct title and edition. Deluxe editions, expansions, optional language packs, downloadable content, and platform-specific versions can affect the amount of content Steam installs. When a game has multiple similarly named entries, do not rely on a search-result snippet—open the Store page for the exact product.

Use the Steam Library as a second check

If the game is already in your account, open Library and select the game while it is still uninstalled. Steam may show the required disk space in the game’s details or as part of the installation flow. Look for the disk-space information before confirming the install.

This route is convenient, but the Store page remains the clearer reference for a game you have not bought. Steam’s buttons and panels can move as the client changes, so focus on the disk-space figure rather than expecting a particular button label.

What Steam’s Storage number actually means

The Store-page figure is best understood as the game’s published available-space requirement. It is not necessarily the exact amount of data Steam will transfer over your internet connection, and it is not a guarantee of the game’s permanent final disk usage.

SSK Portable SSD 500GB External Solid State Hard Drive USB C Up to 1050MB/s
  • Capacity Display Variance: 500GB external ssd often appears as around 465GB on Windows. MacOS can show full 500 GB capacity. This is binary calculation difference and doesn’t affect SSD hard drive actual physical storage
  • 1050 MB/s Speed: Instantly access to your files with blazing-fast 10Gbps external SSD read up to 1050MB/s and write up to 1000MB/s. LED Light indicates USB SSD instant activity
  • Data Security: Solid state drives S.M.A.R.T. health diagnostics and adaptive TRIM optimizing data block management ensures consistent write speeds and extends the longevity of the portable SSD
  • USB-C & USB-A Cable: Both cables featuring rapid USB 3.2 Gen2, this USB SSD effortlessly bridges devices, enabling seamless cross-platform file transfers and backup between computers, smartphones, tablets and iPhone
  • Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity

Installation can involve compressed or processed files. After installation, patches, saved games, configuration data, screenshots, mods, and multiplayer custom content may use additional space. Steam Support specifically identifies patches, saved games, and multiplayer custom content as sources of changing disk usage.

Use wording such as “Steam lists 85 GB of available space”, rather than assuming that the game will download exactly 85 GB. The listed requirement is the practical number to compare against free space, but it should not be treated as a precise network-traffic prediction.

Examples: game sizes can vary widely

Official Steam Store pages researched for this guide listed the following storage requirements:

Game Storage listed on the cited Store page
No Man’s Sky 15 GB
Palworld 40 GB
Rust 45 GB
Hogwarts Legacy 85 GB

These are snapshots of the cited pages, not permanent values. Developers can revise system requirements as a game, its updates, or its supported platforms change. Do not estimate a game’s size from its genre, age, price, or reputation for being a large download. Check the current Store page for the exact title.

Check whether the correct drive has enough free space

A computer’s total capacity is not the same as the space available for a Steam installation. A 1 TB drive may have only a fraction of that capacity free, and Steam may be configured to install games on a different drive from the one you are checking.

Find free space in Windows

In Windows, open File Explorer, select This PC, and review the free-space indicator for each drive. You can also open Settings > System > Storage for a category breakdown of storage use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compare the Steam requirement with the free space on the drive containing the Steam library you plan to use. If your Steam libraries are spread across several drives, check the destination selected during installation—not simply the C: drive or the drive with the largest capacity.

Leave more than the bare minimum

If a game lists 85 GB and the destination drive has only 86 GB free, the installation may be technically close to the requirement but practically unsafe. Leave additional room for installation processing, updates, save data, and other Steam content. A drive that is nearly full can also cause problems when Windows or other applications need temporary working space.

There is no single extra-space percentage that is safe for every game. The sensible rule is simple: the smaller your margin, the greater the chance that an update or temporary installation file will force you to clear space again.

What to do when Steam says there is not enough space

1. Free space with Windows tools

Start with Windows’ built-in storage controls. In Settings > System > Storage, review categories such as temporary files, installed apps, and large or unused files. Empty the Recycle Bin only after checking its contents, and remove applications through Windows or their normal uninstallers.

Microsoft’s storage guidance notes that low disk space can interfere with installing updates and explains ways to check and free space. Review every proposed deletion before confirming it, particularly when a cleanup screen includes downloads, personal files, or previous Windows installations.

Do not delete unfamiliar files directly from Steam’s installation folders, save-game folders, or Windows system directories merely because they look large. Prefer uninstalling games through Steam or Windows, and use Steam’s own storage-management features when moving or removing game content.

2. Uninstall or move games you no longer use

Removing an unused game through Steam is safer than manually deleting its folder because Steam can update its library records correctly. If you want to keep the game, use Steam’s move or storage-management controls where available rather than dragging folders between drives in File Explorer.

3. Select another Steam Library folder

Steam supports library content across multiple drives. If the drive currently selected for installation is full, add or select a Steam Library folder on a drive with enough free space, then choose that location during installation.

The exact menu path and labels can vary between Steam client versions. Look in Steam’s storage or library-management area for the controls to add a drive, add a library folder, or move installed content. Valve’s Steam client documentation describes managing game content across multiple drives and notes improvements to updating when another library folder is available on a different disk.

  • SPACE TO OWN YOUR AI CONTENT – speed and capacity to download your high-res clips and photo edits.
  • 256-BIT AES ENCRYPTION(4) – helps keep private files secure with password protection.

4. Add another drive

If your internal storage is consistently full, a portable external SSD can provide another place for a Steam library. Before buying or using one, check its connection type, capacity, operating-system compatibility, filesystem, and the game’s own performance requirements. An external drive is not automatically equally suitable for every game: connection speed, cable quality, enclosure behavior, and the game’s loading demands matter.

Steam’s multi-drive library support makes additional storage a practical solution, but configure the drive as a Steam Library location and keep it connected when you want to launch games installed there. If a game specifically recommends or requires an SSD, use an SSD rather than assuming a slower external hard drive will provide the same experience.

Optional: use a third-party cleanup utility

Windows’ built-in tools should be your first choice. If you want an additional Windows disk-space cleanup tool, Outbyte PC Repair advertises a disk-space scan that can identify selected temporary, cached, and unused files. Treat it as optional: review every suggested deletion before applying it, and do not use it as a reason to remove Steam game files, save files, or unknown system files automatically.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Outbyte is not required to check a Steam game’s requirement, and a cleanup utility cannot change the amount of space the game needs. It can only help identify files that may be safe to review and remove.

Common mistakes when checking Steam game size

  • Confusing total capacity with free space: compare the requirement with the drive’s available space.
  • Checking the wrong drive: the relevant drive is the one containing the selected Steam Library folder.
  • Reading the wrong platform section: requirements may differ between Windows, macOS, Linux, and SteamOS.
  • Assuming Storage equals download traffic: the listed amount is available-space guidance, not an exact transfer-size promise.
  • Ignoring future usage: patches, saves, mods, and multiplayer custom content can consume more space later.
  • Planning with a barely sufficient margin: installation and updates may need additional working room.
  • Deleting Steam folders manually: uninstall or move games through Steam instead.
  • Treating the requirement as permanent: recheck the Store page because developers can revise it.

A quick pre-install checklist

  • Open the exact game’s current Steam Store page.
  • Read System Requirements > Storage for your platform.
  • Confirm the edition, expansions, and optional content you intend to install.
  • Check free space on the specific destination Steam Library drive.
  • Leave room beyond the published figure for installation work, patches, saves, and custom content.
  • If space is tight, free it safely, choose another library drive, or add suitable storage.

Before installing any Steam game, use the Store page’s Storage line as your starting point, then compare it with free space on the exact drive Steam will use. If the margin is small, solve the storage problem before starting the installation instead of waiting for Steam to fail partway through.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I see how much space a Steam game needs?

Open the game’s Steam Store page and scroll to the System Requirements section. Read the Storage line for your operating system and compare it with free space on the drive selected for your Steam Library.

Is the Steam Storage number the same as the download size?

Not necessarily. Steam’s Storage figure is a published available-space requirement. The amount downloaded can differ because files may be compressed or processed, while patches, saves, and custom content can later increase disk usage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which drive should I check before installing a Steam game?

Check the free-space indicator for the drive containing the selected Steam Library folder. In Windows, open File Explorer and choose This PC. Checking the computer’s total capacity or a different drive can give a misleading result.

What can I do if Steam says there is not enough disk space?

Free space with Windows’ storage tools, uninstall or move unused games through Steam, select another Steam Library folder on a different drive, or add suitable storage such as a portable external SSD.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Open the game’s Steam Store page, read System Requirements > Storage, and compare that figure with free space on the selected Steam Library drive. The number is a published available-space requirement—not a guaranteed download size—so leave extra room for installation files, updates, saves, and custom content.
