When NFL inactive reports come out
NFL teams designate players inactive about 90 minutes before a game is scheduled to start, according to NFL Fantasy Support. Treat that as an expected window, not an exact publication deadline: check again as kickoff approaches. Because games start at different times, a single check early in the day can miss later reports.
Where to check a player’s status
Official NFL and team updates
Start with the NFL.com Inactives page and the player’s team announcement. The NFL page may not always have reports available when you first visit; its retrieved view displayed “Please check back soon for NFL Inactive Reports for this Season.” If the list has not populated near kickoff, look for the team’s update and use a fantasy tracker for timely context.
Fantasy news trackers
ESPN Fantasy’s inactive coverage provides player-by-player updates and analysis as lists arrive, and advises readers to refresh for updates. That can help answer “Whom should you start? Whom should you sit?”—but commentary is not a substitute for confirming the official designation when possible.

A game-day checklist for fantasy managers
- Before game day: Review the weekly injury report and flag questionable or otherwise uncertain starters. An injury designation is not the final inactive report, so plan to check again near kickoff.
- About 90 minutes before each player’s kickoff: Check NFL.com Inactives and the team announcement. Repeat this for each game window as its start time approaches.
- Confirm the fantasy impact: Use a fantasy tracker for quick analysis, then verify the player’s status against an official listing if available.
- If your starter is inactive: Open the lineup spot and choose an eligible bench replacement before the affected game begins and before your league’s applicable lock. Make sure the replacement has not already played and is eligible for that roster position.
How lineup locks and auto-swap affect your move
Lineup deadlines depend on the fantasy platform and league settings. NFL Fantasy’s rules tie a player’s status change to the scheduled team start as determined by NFL.com’s clock; that timing describes NFL Fantasy and should not be assumed to apply identically elsewhere. Check your platform’s own lock rules and make changes before the player’s game starts.
NFL Fantasy Auto-Swap Inactives
NFL Fantasy documents an Auto-Swap Inactives setting for managers who cannot monitor every kickoff. It benches players projected for zero points and starts the highest-ranked eligible player on the user’s backups list. Configure and rank backups ahead of time. NFL Fantasy says the feature “never touches anyone else on your roster”; this describes its own Auto-Swap feature, not a general rule for other platforms. Check your fantasy platform’s settings to see whether it offers a similar option.
