For a game-specific snapshot, open NHL.com’s projected lineups page, find the matchup and date, then check the dated NHL Status Report and the teams’ latest news for changes. Treat the lineup as a projection—not confirmation that every listed player will dress—and check again close to puck drop.
Find the projected lineup for the right game
On NHL.com’s Projected lineups, starting goalies for today page, match both teams and the game date before reading the entries. The page provides expected forward combinations and defense pairs, goalie names, scratches, injured players and status-report context. Its October 2, 2026 season-specific page is an example of the format; daily entries are time-sensitive.
Searches such as “NHL lineups tonight,” “who is starting in goal tonight,” “is [player] playing tonight” and “NHL injury report today” can help you get to the right game or player. Still verify the date and matchup on the page itself, especially when games span time zones or a search result is old.
Check updates and distinguish a projection from a confirmed lineup
- Open the matchup projection. Confirm the teams and game date, then note the expected lines, goalie, scratches and injuries.
- Read the newest dated NHL Status Report. Look for relevant changes such as an injury ruling, injured-reserve move, activation or return. The NHL’s Status Report provides dated updates; team news may add a more specific update for that club.
- Compare what each report actually says. A projected line combination or goalie is not the same as a submitted starting lineup. Under Rule 7.1 of the NHL’s 2024-25 Official Rules, the visiting team’s manager or coach names the starting lineup with the game-lineup submission before play.
- Check again near puck drop. The league pages do not establish a universal publication deadline or fixed update cadence, so an earlier projection may not reflect a late change.
Read injury and roster labels accurately
“Injured” does not necessarily mean “on injured reserve” (IR). A report may describe a player as injured without saying the club placed that player on IR. Under the NHL’s Hockey Operations Guidelines, IR is a roster action: club medical staff make the determination under club standards, with a minimum seven-day inability-to-play threshold and at least seven days of game ineligibility after placement. The guidelines also set a maximum 23-player roster and a minimum of 20 players—18 skaters and two goaltenders.

Keep these descriptions separate when checking a player’s status: injured, scratched, activated, on IR, projected to play, or named in the submitted starting lineup. Each describes a different piece of information; one does not automatically establish another.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Resolve conflicting reports
When reports disagree, compare them in this order:
- Date and time: A newer update relevant to the game usually supersedes an older projection.
- Source and report type: Identify whether you are reading an NHL projection, a team announcement or a submitted starter.
- Exact status: Check whether the player is called injured, scratched, activated, on IR or available to play.
Give the newest directly relevant league or team update the most weight. If neither has resolved the player’s availability, keep it uncertain rather than treating a projection or an injury label as a final decision. The reviewed NHL materials do not establish a guaranteed public deadline for injury disclosures or a universal required level of detail.
