Roblox does not document a user-facing archive for chat from an experience after you leave it. Older user-to-user Inbox messages are separate: they remained in Inbox as read-only after Roblox ended that messaging feature, and were not moved to Chat.
Find an existing chat with a Roblox friend
On a phone or tablet
- Open Roblox and go to the home screen.
- Tap Chat at the bottom of the screen.
- Select the existing conversation you want to view.
Roblox’s current instructions also describe using the plus button in Chat to choose friends and start a new conversation. That starts a chat; it is not a way to retrieve a conversation that is no longer accessible.
On a computer
Use Roblox’s Chat interface for messaging and chatting with friends. The layout can differ from the mobile app.
If Chat or a conversation is missing, availability may depend on your account’s age group, age-check status, communication and privacy settings, parental controls, and region. Roblox’s chat, privacy, and filtering guidance explains that these features and controls vary. Check the current instructions for your account and region rather than assuming every account has the same tabs.

Can you recover chat from an experience after leaving?
Roblox describes Experience chat as communication among users in the same experience that “ends as soon as you leave that experience.” The help page explains how to open it while playing: press / on a keyboard or select the chat icon on a supported screen, if the experience developer has enabled chat. Roblox does not describe that as a permanent log or provide a user-facing archive for a past session. See Roblox’s Experience Chat instructions.
Access rules can affect whether you can use chat in the first place. Roblox’s Experience Chat guidance says users aged 5–9 need parental consent to enable Experience chat, and users under 16 need parental consent for Direct chat. Requirements and availability can change; check the linked current guidance for your account and region.

Find old user-to-user Inbox messages
Roblox ended user-to-user Inbox Messaging on October 29, 2024. Its update says existing messages remained in Inbox in read-only form: users could no longer reply to them, and the messages did not carry over to the Chat tab. This older Inbox correspondence is not the same as a friend conversation in Chat or an in-experience session. Read Roblox’s Inbox messaging sunset announcement.
Request a copy of account data
- Sign in to the Roblox account.
- Open Privacy settings.
- Under Account data, deactivation & deletion, choose Request under Request Account Data.
- Complete any identity verification Roblox requests. A verified email address is required.
- Watch for Roblox’s notification through Roblox messages and the verified email address, then download the report.
Roblox says the download link expires seven days after it is sent. The report covers personal information associated with the requesting account, excludes other users’ personal information, and does not let you select a date range. Roblox’s public instructions do not promise that the report includes chat transcripts, so do not treat it as a guaranteed chat-log export. For details, see Right to Access Reports. If you believe personal data is missing, Roblox directs users to contact Support.

What parents can and cannot review
Roblox’s Parental Controls Overview describes controls for managing communication settings, including Game chat and Game direct chat for linked parent accounts. Roblox says those controls do not apply to chat features independently built by experience developers. These settings are controls over communication, not evidence that a parent can browse a complete transcript of a child’s chats.

- Filtering: Roblox says filtered chat is the default for eligible communication. Its safety guidance says posts and chats for players aged 12 and younger are filtered both for inappropriate content and to prevent personal information from being posted. What appears in an interface may therefore differ from what someone remembers typing.
- Account and region: Age checks, age group, privacy settings, parental controls, and regional availability can change which communication features appear.
- Experience settings: An experience developer must enable Experience chat for players to use it there.
