Before buying, open the game’s Steam Store page and check its Steam Deck compatibility rating. Open the rating’s details too: “Playable” may come with a specific caveat, while “Unknown” means Valve has not checked the game—not that it failed a test. You can also see ratings in your Steam Deck Library or filter Steam Store search results to show Verified games.
Check the game’s rating on Steam
- Search for the exact game in the Steam Store and open its product page.
- Find the Steam Deck compatibility rating and open its details. Don’t rely on the badge alone, particularly when it says Playable; the details explain what adjustment or limitation Valve noted. Valve says reviewed titles show compatibility details in the store and library: Steam Deck compatibility guidance.
- Decide whether the stated caveat works for you. Consider whether any required controls, launcher interactions, or other listed adjustments would be comfortable on the Deck.
If you already own a Deck, you can also find a game in your Steam Library, where compatibility ratings are displayed; library views can be filtered by compatibility. When browsing for games to buy, Steam Store search offers a Verified filter. Valve’s compatibility guidance describes these store and library options.
What each Steam Deck compatibility label means
| Label | What it indicates | What to consider before buying |
|---|---|---|
| Verified | Valve says the game works well on Steam Deck out of the box. | It meets Valve’s compatibility criteria for the Deck; the label is not a review of whether you will enjoy the game. |
| Playable | The game may need some manual adjustment. Valve’s examples include choosing a community controller layout or using the touchscreen to navigate a launcher. | Read the game’s compatibility details and decide whether the specific adjustment is acceptable. |
| Unsupported | Valve says the game currently does not function on Steam Deck. | Do not treat this rating as a promise that the game will work on the Deck. |
| Unknown | Valve has not checked the game for compatibility yet. | This is unconfirmed status, not a failed test or evidence that the game is Verified. Valve’s definition is on its compatibility page. |
What Valve checks for Verified status
Verified is about more than whether a game launches. Valve groups its criteria into four areas: input, display, seamlessness, and system support. Its published criteria include the following:
- Input: Deck controls should work, the game should use appropriate controller icons, and the on-screen keyboard should appear when needed.
- Display: The game should support the Deck’s default resolution—1280×800 or 1280×720—with readable text and suitable settings.
- Seamlessness: The experience should avoid compatibility warnings and launchers that cannot be navigated with a controller.
- System support: Where Proton is used, the game should work with supported Proton and middleware, including anti-cheat support.

Compatibility ratings can change as Valve reviews more games and as games and the Deck change. If you are relying on an older screenshot, article, or recommendation, check the current rating and its details on the game’s Steam page before buying. Valve says ratings for tested titles apply to both Steam Deck LCD and OLED models; see its compatibility guidance.
