Prioritize Max Battles when you want to build a Dynamax or Gigantamax roster and can meet their roster and Max Particle requirements. Because bosses and event bonuses rotate, check the live game and official announcements before spending passes or resources.
Choose by what you want from the battle
| Your priority | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Catch or farm a particular featured boss | Raid | Raid access depends on the current schedule. Confirm the boss and rewards in game before using a pass. |
| Play remotely | Usually Raid | Remote Raids use a Remote Raid Pass. A Remote Max Battle also requires a Remote Raid Pass and the locally required Max Particles, adding another resource requirement. Pokémon GO Help: Max Battles |
| Build a Dynamax or Gigantamax collection, or improve Max Moves | Max Battle | Max Battles are the format centered on Max Pokémon, Power Spots and Max Particles. Pokémon GO: Max Battles |
| Join a large coordinated group | Gigantamax Max Battle, if available | Up to 40 Trainers can take part, organized into groups of four or fewer. Whether that is enough depends on the boss and team preparation. Pokémon GO: Gigantamax Battles |
| Play with a small group or without a Max-ready roster | Raid, if a suitable boss is available | Max Battles have format-specific Pokémon eligibility and Max Particle requirements; Raids do not require a Max roster. |
What you need to enter
Raids
Raids use Raid Passes. To join a Remote Raid, you need a Remote Raid Pass. The boss schedule determines which Pokémon you can encounter, so check the current in-game listing rather than relying on an older schedule.

Max Battles
Max Battles take place at selected Power Spots and require Max Particles; the amount depends on the Power Spot Boss. Standard Dynamax battles require at least one Dynamax Pokémon in your party, while Gigantamax battles require a Dynamax or Gigantamax Pokémon. For remote participation, the official help page specifies both a Remote Raid Pass and the usual local Max Particle requirement: Max Battles support details.
Max Battles are also the route to a Max-ready collection: official guidance says only Pokémon caught in Max Battle encounters, and their evolutions, can Dynamax in Max Battles. This is a format-specific eligibility rule; check current in-game details in case it changes. Official Gigantamax battle guidance

How the battle formats differ
Standard Dynamax Max Battles
Up to four Trainers can team up, and the standard Dynamax rules described by the official guide limit battle parties to Dynamax Pokémon. Pokémon GO Max Battle rules
Gigantamax Max Battles
Up to 40 Trainers can join, arranged in groups of four or fewer. Eligible parties may use Dynamax or Gigantamax Pokémon. These are official participation rules, not a promise that a particular group size will defeat every boss. Gigantamax battle rules

Max Battle turns and teamwork
A Max transformation lasts three turns. During Max Battles, players can dodge and collect energy; if a Pokémon faints, its Trainer can cheer for teammates. Official Max Battle guide
What happens if a Max Battle attempt fails?
Max Particles are only spent when the boss is successfully defeated, according to the Pokémon GO official game guide. A failed attempt therefore does not consume those particles. Pokémon GO Max Battle guide

Check the live schedule before committing
Raid bosses, Max bosses and event bonuses rotate, so there is no permanent answer about which format is more rewarding. Check the current in-game listings and official event announcements for the boss and bonus that match your goal. No current boss schedule or stable daily Remote Raid Pass limit or Max Particle cap is established here; avoid planning around an assumed fixed limit.
Group-size advice can also be event-specific. For example, a 2024 event page estimated that groups of 10–20 Trainers should be able to beat Gigantamax Toxtricity during that event. That was guidance for that boss and event, not a general requirement for Gigantamax battles. Official Gigantamax battle announcement

Plan for a long outdoor session
Both formats can involve time outdoors, but an older study is not a current battery benchmark. A 2019 peer-reviewed study of Pokémon GO raiding reported that raids consumed more battery power than regular phone use and that some players carried extra portable chargers. It did not test or recommend a particular power bank. Group Interactions in Location-Based Gaming: A Case Study of Raiding in Pokémon GO
