To get more play time from a Steam Deck, start by keeping its display refresh rate within the model’s limit, then reduce a game’s graphics settings if you can accept the visual tradeoff. Install available SteamOS updates first. These changes can reduce unnecessary work, but Valve does not provide a guaranteed number of extra minutes per setting.
Start with the settings that affect the game’s workload
Keep refresh settings within your model’s limit
Valve warns that an individual game setting above the display’s maximum refresh rate will not improve performance and may drain the battery faster. The Steam Deck LCD is capped at 60 Hz; the OLED model is capped at 90 Hz. Valve also says the refresh rate can be lowered in device settings. If a game remains acceptably smooth at a lower setting, try it and compare the experience with the battery estimate shown on your Deck. There is no single best refresh rate for every game.
Check the model-specific ceiling before changing a game’s settings. The caps and battery specifications below come from Valve’s Basic Use & Troubleshooting Guide and Steam Deck technical specifications, accessed in 2026.

Lower graphics settings when the game is doing more than you need
If a game is struggling or its visuals are more demanding than you need, lower its graphics preset or adjust individual graphics settings. Try one change at a time so you can judge whether the visual difference is worth it. Valve recommends adjusting graphics to reduce system load as a software troubleshooting step, but does not quantify how much extra battery life any change provides.
Update SteamOS and check game compatibility
- Install any available Steam Deck system updates.
- Check the game’s Deck Verified status. Valve’s categories indicate whether a game works by default, may require manual configuration, or is currently unsupported.
- Launch the game and make a small settings change, such as lowering its graphics preset or choosing a refresh rate within the model’s limit.
- Play under comparable conditions and compare the experience and on-screen battery estimate. Treat that estimate as a guide, not a controlled measurement or a promised runtime.

When external power makes sense
A USB-C power bank that supports USB Power Delivery can supply power while you play or recharge the Deck between sessions. This is useful when you can stay connected to an external supply; it does not increase the Deck’s unplugged runtime. Steam Deck uses USB Power Delivery and does not support Fast Charging or Quick Charge specifications. Valve’s guidance does not certify individual power banks, so confirm a bank’s USB-C PD support rather than assuming compatibility from a fast-charging label.

Steam Support advises exiting or disabling third-party applications installed through Desktop Mode when troubleshooting an issue. That is general troubleshooting guidance, not evidence that every background app meaningfully drains battery during gaming. Valve also does not recommend opening or modifying the device; battery replacement or repair is not a routine battery-life setting.
