How to Check Whether a Game’s Release Date Changed—and Get Reliable Launch Updates

By VGSources Team 10 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To verify a changed game release date, find the newest dated announcement on the developer’s or publisher’s official website or verified social account, then cross-check the date on the storefront for your platform and region. Record the old date, replacement date, announcement date, platform, region, edition and release phase. Treat third-party calendars as discovery tools, not final evidence.

This matters because a “new release date” may apply only to one console, one territory, an early-access build, a demo or the full version 1.0 launch. The date shown for your copy can therefore differ from a headline date elsewhere.

The quickest reliable check

Use this order when you need to know whether a game was delayed or what its latest launch date is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the game’s official news page and verified social accounts.
  2. Find the newest dated announcement that names a release date or a change to one.
  3. Check whether it states the previous date and the replacement date.
  4. Confirm the date on the relevant platform storefront, using the account’s country or region.
  5. Match the exact platform, edition and release phase: early access, demo, full launch or version 1.0.
  6. Save the announcement URL, announcement date, old date, new date and scope in a note or spreadsheet.

If the official notice and storefront disagree, do not choose the more convenient date. Treat the conflict as unresolved until the publisher, developer or platform updates one of those records.

What counts as a release-date change?

A date has changed only when an authoritative source replaces a previously announced date or clearly revises the launch window. A retailer’s altered listing, an undated social post or a third-party calendar edit can signal that something happened, but none proves the change by itself.

A full-game delay

This moves the planned launch of the complete game. An announcement should identify the old date, the new date or window, and the reason or development status when the publisher chooses to provide one.

A platform-specific delay

One version can move while another remains on schedule. A PlayStation 5 date does not establish the Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch or PC date. Record each platform separately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An edition or region change

Deluxe, collector’s, price-revision or regional editions can have their own dates. A date for North America may not apply to Europe, Asia or another territory, and a physical edition can ship on a different day from a digital release.

A release-phase change

Early access, a demo, an open beta and the final version 1.0 are different milestones. A post announcing early access is not evidence that the finished game has launched. Conversely, a 1.0 delay may leave an earlier-access build available.

A launch-window clarification

Moving from “2026” to “October 2026” is an update in precision, not necessarily a delay. Call it a delay only when the new window is later than the previously promised one, or when the announcement explicitly says the launch moved.

Step 1: Start with the developer or publisher

The newest dated official notice is your primary evidence. Begin at the game’s official site, publisher newsroom or developer blog, then check verified accounts on the social networks the team uses for announcements. Search within those channels for the title and terms such as “release date,” “launch,” “delay,” “coming,” “early access” and “version 1.0.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prefer a post with a publication date and explicit wording. The strongest notice states both dates, for example: “moving from [old date] to [new date].” If it gives only a new date, compare it with the last dated announcement you saved instead of assuming the previous date.

Example: Hogwarts Legacy

SEGA’s July 21, 2026 notice changed the planned date for the Hogwarts Legacy price-revision edition from August 27, 2026 to September 17, 2026. The change is auditable because the notice supplies the announcement date and both release dates. A search result that still shows August 27 is older evidence, not a competing current date.

Check that the post is genuinely official

  • Use the publisher’s or developer’s own domain, newsroom or account with a verification indicator where the service provides one.
  • Read the full post rather than relying on a search snippet; snippets can retain an old date.
  • Check the post’s date and any edit or update label.
  • Confirm that the title, edition and platforms in the post match the version you plan to buy.

Step 2: Cross-check the platform storefront

After finding the official notice, open the storefront for the platform and region you will use. Nintendo’s support guidance states: “A game’s release date can be found on Nintendo eShop or on the official Nintendo website.” The same principle applies elsewhere: inspect the listing attached to your own platform account, not a generic web page cached for another country.

Why the storefront check matters

Storefronts can display a platform-specific launch time, a local calendar date or a separate date for a preorder edition. They may also distinguish a playable early-access period from the full release. A publisher’s global announcement can therefore be correct while the store page for your region shows a different local date.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to capture

  • The exact date and, when shown, launch time or time zone.
  • The platform and hardware generation.
  • The edition or product name.
  • Your storefront region.
  • Whether the listing says early access, demo, beta, full release or version 1.0.

Take a screenshot or copy the listing into your notes when the date is important. Store pages can change without preserving their previous wording.

Step 3: Match the exact release scope

Before deciding that a game “got delayed again,” identify the scope of every date you find. Build the comparison around five fields: platform, region, edition, release phase and date type.

Field Questions to answer Common source of confusion
Platform Is this PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Steam, Epic Games Store or another version? A console date is repeated as if it covered PC, or a PC date is treated as a console date.
Region Which country or storefront account does the date cover? Midnight launches and time-zone conversions produce different calendar dates.
Edition Is it standard, deluxe, physical, digital or a price-revision edition? One edition receives access earlier or later than another.
Release phase Is it a demo, beta, early access, full launch or version 1.0? An early-access date is mistaken for the finished-game launch.
Date type Is the source giving a day, a month, a year or only a target window? A more precise date is interpreted as a delay when it is only clarification.

Bandai Namco Entertainment Europe’s Directive 8020 announcement pairs May 12, 2026 with PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC (Steam). That pairing is useful because it defines the platforms covered by the date instead of leaving readers to infer them.

Xbox Wire’s Towerborne notice gives February 26, 2026 as the full launch date and identifies the participating platforms. Use that same discipline for any game: copy the platforms named in the notice rather than extending the date to systems the announcement does not mention.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 4: Keep an auditable change history

A short record prevents an old search result from being mistaken for the latest announcement. Use one row for every distinct platform, region, edition and release phase.

Announcement date Old date New date Platform Region Edition / phase Official source
2026-07-21 August 27, 2026 September 17, 2026 As stated in notice As stated in notice Hogwarts Legacy price-revision edition SEGA announcement
2026 October 2026 March 2027 1.0 launch scope As stated in notice No Rest for the Wicked version 1.0 Official delay notice

For your own tracker, add the URL exactly as published, the time you checked the storefront and a notes column for exceptions. Do not overwrite the old row when a new date appears. Preserving the sequence shows whether the game moved once, moved repeatedly or changed only on one platform.

What to do when the old date is unknown

Write “previous date not stated” rather than guessing. Search the official archive for the last dated announcement, and mark the result as an inferred predecessor only if the source clearly identifies it. A third-party calendar can help locate an older announcement, but the archived official post should supply the evidence.

Step 5: Monitor official channels near launch

A release date is a plan, not a guarantee. Recheck the official news page and verified accounts as launch approaches, especially when the date is still a month or year rather than a specific day.

No Rest for the Wicked’s official 1.0 notice says, “No Rest for the Wicked’s 1.0 launch is moving from October 2026 to March 2027,” and says the team will continue communicating through official social channels. That is a model for ongoing monitoring: save the delay notice, then watch the channels it names for later confirmation, launch-time changes or platform details.

A practical monitoring schedule

  • When a date is announced: save the notice and storefront listing.
  • One month before launch: check for a final platform, edition or regional clarification.
  • One week before launch: verify the storefront date and preload or early-access wording.
  • On launch day: check the official account and store if the game is not available at the expected time.

Use alerts or a calendar reminder if the game matters to your schedule, but keep the official announcement as the source of record.

How to compare sources when dates conflict

Evaluate each source on four axes: authority, recency, scope and updateability. The highest-quality answer is the source that performs best on all four for your specific platform and region.

Source type Authority Recency Scope detail Best use
Publisher or developer announcement Highest for the planned date Use the newest dated notice May specify platforms, editions and phases Primary evidence of a change
Verified publisher or developer social account High when the account is official Often fastest for urgent updates Short posts may omit region or edition Breaking updates; follow up with full notice
Platform storefront High for that platform and region Can change without a detailed explanation Usually precise about product and local date Cross-check for your purchase
Third-party calendar or database Variable May lag behind a change Can combine dates without showing provenance Discovery only; confirm elsewhere

If an official announcement gives a new date but the storefront has not changed, record both observations with timestamps. If the storefront changes first, look for a dated official explanation before calling it a confirmed delay.

Diagnosing common “did it get delayed again?” situations

The search result shows an older date

Open the result and inspect its publication date. Search the official site for the title plus the newer date, then compare the newest dated notice with your saved history. Search indexes frequently retain old pages after a date changes.

The publisher says one date and the store says another

Check platform, region, edition and time zone. If all four match, treat the mismatch as unresolved and wait for an updated official notice or storefront correction. Do not average the dates or choose the later one automatically.

A social post gives a date without saying “delay”

Compare it with the last dated announcement. If the new date is later, record the movement and label the post as a date update; reserve the word “delay” for an explicit postponement or a clearly later replacement date.

The announcement says “launch” but the store says “early access”

Read the product description and edition details. Record early access and version 1.0 as separate milestones. The availability of an early-access build does not establish that the final release has arrived.

Only one platform disappears from the announcement

Do not infer cancellation. Look for a platform-specific notice, a revised product page or a statement that the date applies only to the listed systems. Keep the platform as “not stated” until an official source resolves it.

The date changes from a month to “coming soon”

That is a loss of precision and may indicate uncertainty, but it is not evidence of a particular replacement date. Record the announcement and use “date not stated” for the new target.

Platform and region checks

PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S

Use the store listing tied to the console account and verify the edition name. Cross-generation products can show separate entries, so ensure the date belongs to the current-generation version you intend to play.

Nintendo Switch

Check Nintendo eShop and the official Nintendo website, the two locations identified by Nintendo Support. Confirm the country setting, because regional storefronts can display different local dates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

PC on Steam or Epic Games Store

Check the specific PC storefront named by the announcement. A date for Steam does not automatically establish the date for another PC store. Also distinguish a playable preview, demo or early-access package from the full release.

Multiple platforms

Create separate tracker rows even when one announcement lists several systems. If a later notice changes only one platform, you can update that row without rewriting the dates that remain unchanged.

What reliable launch information looks like

A dependable update lets another reader reproduce your conclusion. It identifies who published the notice, when it was published, what changed and which product is affected. A useful note might read:

“Official notice dated July 21, 2026: Hogwarts Legacy price-revision edition moved from August 27, 2026 to September 17, 2026. Scope and region: as stated by the publisher. Storefront checked: [platform and region], [date checked].”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For an announcement that supplies only a target month, preserve that precision instead of inventing a day. For a storefront that shows a date but no announcement, label it as a storefront listing and continue looking for the official explanation.

When third-party calendars are still useful

Calendars, databases and community posts can save time by surfacing a game you had not been following or pointing to a likely change. Their value is discovery and breadth. Their weakness is provenance: they may combine regional dates, fail to distinguish editions or update after the official source.

Use one as a lead, then open the linked publisher, developer or platform record. If no primary record exists, report the date as unconfirmed rather than presenting the calendar entry as fact. This approach preserves speed without confusing aggregation with authority.

A repeatable checklist

  • Have I found the newest dated official announcement?
  • Does it state the old date, new date or launch window?
  • Did I verify the publisher or developer account?
  • Does the date cover my platform?
  • Does it cover my region and time zone?
  • Am I checking the correct edition?
  • Is this early access, a demo, beta or version 1.0?
  • Does the platform storefront agree?
  • Did I save the announcement date and both dates?
  • Have I set a reminder to recheck near launch?

Following all ten checks gives you a defensible answer to “Has this game’s release date changed?” and makes it clear exactly which version of the game the answer describes.
