Toy Story: Retro Roundup! Nintendo Switch 2 settings for the best picture and controls

For the clearest image, open the collection utility menu by pressing the right control stick inward, select a clean or upscaled filter, and use whichever widescreen/fullscreen option keeps the original artwork from looking stretched. Choose CRT Curved only when you prefer a softer, scanline-style retro-TV look. In docked mode, set HDR to Compatible Software Only and resolution to Automatic; then match RGB range with your television and enable ALLM or 120Hz only when your display supports them.

Quick setup: the recommended starting point

Area Starting choice Why
Collection menu Press the right control stick inward This opens the utility menu containing display, filter, save, load, reset, resume and control options.
Image filter Clean or upscaled Small sprites, text and sharp pixel edges remain easier to read.
Retro appearance CRT Curved It adds a curved CRT-style presentation with softer scanline character.
Aspect option Use the option that looks least stretched Some original games do not tolerate widening equally well.
Docked HDR Compatible Software Only Non-HDR software is less likely to receive an unwanted color shift.
Docked resolution Automatic This is the safest general-purpose setting for a mixed retro collection and different televisions.
Controls Start with defaults, then remap only uncomfortable actions The package spans platformers, handheld games and a PlayStation-era racer, so there is no single ideal layout for every title.

Use that configuration as a baseline, then adjust one setting at a time. Changing several image options together makes it harder to identify which choice improved or harmed readability.

What is included in Toy Story: Retro Roundup!

Nintendo Life lists Disney/Pixar Toy Story: Retro Roundup! as a Nintendo Switch 2 collection developed by Digital Eclipse and published by Atari. Its North American release date is October 15, 2026, and the listed price is $29.99.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The listing describes five classic games represented in 11 total console and handheld versions. Its catalog text names Toy Story, Toy Story 2: Buzz Lightyear to the Rescue!, Toy Story 2, Buzz Lightyear of Star Command, Toy Story Racer and A Bug’s Life. Because that wording names six titles while describing five games, verify the final store listing or in-game menu if the exact title count matters to your purchase decision.

#1 Best Overall
Nintendo Switch 2 System
  • The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
  • One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
  • Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
  • Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
  • GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play

Alongside the games, the collection adds Rewind, Rex’s Cheat Codes, Practice Mode, interviews, a virtual museum and a music player. Those additions are particularly useful when switching between versions that originally used different hardware, displays and control conventions.

How to open the picture and control options

  1. Launch the collection and start any game.
  2. Press the right control stick inward. This is the stick-click action, not a direction pressed on the stick.
  3. Use the utility menu to select widescreen or fullscreen presentation, background borders, a filter, save, load, reset or resume.
  4. Open the customizable-controls area when you need to change an action.
  5. Return to the game and check a representative scene with text, a small character sprite and a moving background before deciding whether the setting works.

The menu is the central place to tune the package. You do not need to leave the game and change every option in the Switch 2 system software; the collection’s own display choices are available from this stick-click menu.

Choosing between clean, upscaled and CRT Curved filters

Clean or upscaled: the readability choice

Use a clean or upscaled presentation when you want hard pixel edges, legible menus and the least visual interference around small sprites. This is the practical choice for learning an unfamiliar game, reading instructional screens or playing a handheld version on a television where the original artwork is already being enlarged.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check thin text and single-pixel details rather than judging only the title screen. If letters remain distinct and diagonal edges do not acquire distracting halos, keep this filter.

CRT Curved: the nostalgia choice

CRT Curved is the collection’s explicitly demonstrated retro-TV option. Digital Eclipse’s Stephen Frost showed it at Gamescom, and Nintendo Everything highlighted it in its review of the utility options. The curved presentation and scanline-style softness can make the games feel closer to their original living-room context, but it is less suitable when your priority is maximum text clarity.

Choose CRT Curved for atmosphere, then switch back to clean or upscaled whenever a game’s small HUD elements or dialogue become tiring to read. The filter changes the presentation; it does not repair an original game’s camera behavior or redesign its artwork.

Background borders

Background borders are useful when you want the game image to occupy a defined central area without filling unused screen space with a stretched picture. Select a border that keeps the active game window easy to distinguish from the television’s surrounding black or colored area. If the border makes the playfield feel too small, try the alternate fullscreen presentation before changing the filter.

Widescreen or fullscreen: avoid a stretched picture

Test both choices with a scene containing a circular object, a character viewed from the side and a straight platform edge. Keep the option in which circles remain circular and character proportions look natural. A wider image can be comfortable on a modern television, but widening an older game may make the original composition appear unnaturally broad.

Nintendo Switch 2 System with Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2 Bundle
  • The next evolution of the Nintendo Switch system
  • One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
  • Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
  • Supports up to 4K resolution** when using a compatible game and TV connected via the included Nintendo Switch 2 dock
  • Nintendo Switch 2 plays compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games.***

If a game’s original proportions look wrong after widening, return to fullscreen or the less-distorting option. Make this decision per game rather than assuming that one aspect choice will look identical across all 11 versions.

Switch 2 docked TV settings

The collection’s own filter is only one part of the docked image. Switch 2 output settings can change color, resolution and refresh behavior before the signal reaches the television.

Switch 2 setting Recommended approach Important qualification
HDR Compatible Software Only Tom’s Guide recommends this mode so non-HDR software is not color-shifted. Toy Story: Retro Roundup! contains older software, so a system-wide HDR mode intended for everything can be a poor default.
Resolution Automatic Automatic is the safest general choice when you want the console and television to negotiate an appropriate signal.
Manual resolution 1080p or 1440p when you specifically need 120Hz; 4K when 60Hz output is sufficient The documented system behavior described by Tom’s Guide allows 120Hz at 1080p or 1440p, while 4K is limited to 60Hz.
RGB range Match the console range to the television’s range A mismatch can make blacks look crushed or the whole image look washed out. The correct value depends on the display’s input setting.
ALLM Enable when your television supports automatic low-latency mode ALLM changes the television’s behavior; it does not alter the game’s original frame rate.
120Hz Enable only with a compatible display and a resolution that supports it Higher output refresh capability is a system/display feature, not proof that every included game renders at 120 frames per second.

When to use 4K, 1440p or 1080p

Use Automatic first. If you are troubleshooting a television handshake or a refresh-rate choice, test 1080p or 1440p because those modes can permit 120Hz on Switch 2. Choose 4K when your priority is a 4K signal and 60Hz is acceptable; the system is limited to 60Hz at 4K according to the documented Switch 2 display behavior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not treat 120Hz as a required Toy Story setting. The collection consists of older games and versions, and the useful question is whether the television displays the signal cleanly, not whether the output number is as high as possible.

Color and HDR troubleshooting

  • If non-HDR games look unnaturally bright, gray or over-saturated, set HDR to Compatible Software Only.
  • If dark areas lose detail, check that RGB range is the same on the console and television.
  • If the television repeatedly changes modes or loses the signal, return resolution to Automatic before testing other combinations.
  • If motion settings on the television create an artificial “smooth” look, use the set’s game or low-latency mode rather than adding processing that changes the original presentation.

Handheld versus docked play

Handheld mode removes the television’s HDR, RGB-range and external refresh negotiation from the equation. You still use the collection utility menu for filter, aspect, borders and controls, but there is no reason to tune a docked TV setting for a session played on the built-in screen.

Nintendo Everything’s reviewer reported that handheld and docked play flowed equally well in their sessions. That is a dated review observation, not a guarantee for every console, display or future software update. It does indicate that changing modes is a reasonable way to compare readability without expecting a different game build.

Controls: a reliable way to find your layout

Start with the default layout

Begin with the collection’s default controls so you can follow the How to Play material without translating every instruction. This is especially important when moving among games that originated on different controllers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use How to Play and Practice Mode

  1. Open the game’s How to Play material and identify movement, jump, attack, acceleration, braking and menu actions.
  2. Enter Practice Mode and repeat those actions without spending a life or committing to a full stage.
  3. Notice whether your thumb can reach the most frequent action without losing contact with movement.
  4. Remap only the action that feels awkward, then repeat the same drill.
  5. Keep the layout when the change improves reach without making the on-screen instructions confusing.

Practice Mode is more than a tutorial convenience: it lets you evaluate a layout before an older game’s difficulty turns a control problem into a failed attempt.

What to consider when remapping

  • Platformers: prioritize comfortable jump and attack reach, because those actions are commonly combined with directional movement.
  • Racing: prioritize steering, acceleration and braking access, then check that camera or menu actions are not easy to press accidentally.
  • Handheld versions: check whether small on-screen prompts remain easy to read with your selected filter and aspect option.
  • Menus: keep confirmation, cancellation and pause actions easy to distinguish so you do not reset or leave a session by mistake.

One universal “best” layout is unlikely because the package combines older platformers, a PlayStation-era racer and handheld versions. Judge a remap by camera comfort, jump or attack reach, menu access and the clarity of the selected filter.

Rewind, saves and difficulty assistance

Rewind after a mistake

Hold L2 and R2 together to activate Rewind, according to Nintendo Everything’s review. Use it immediately after a missed jump, hit or turn rather than waiting until several mistakes have accumulated. Rewind is most effective when you treat it as a short correction tool, not as a replacement for learning the level’s timing.

Practice before spending attempts

Practice Mode lets you rehearse sections without relying solely on repeated full runs. Pair it with Rewind when you are learning a difficult sequence: practice the movement, attempt it in the game and rewind only the error that prevents progress.

Rex’s Cheat Codes

Rex’s Cheat Codes are another built-in way to smooth the difficulty of older releases. Use them when your goal is to explore the collection, museum material or later stages rather than reproduce the original challenge exactly. If you are learning a game for the first time, try Practice Mode and Rewind first so you can decide whether a code is necessary.

Three save files per game

Nintendo Everything reports three save files for each game. Keep one file for a normal run, one for experimentation with cheats or alternate settings, and one for a separate player or different progress point. The utility menu’s save and load commands are available through the right-stick menu.

Performance expectations and remaining original quirks

Nintendo Everything’s reviewer wrote: “I experienced no gameplay lag, frame drops, glitches, or other technical issues.” The same review said handheld and docked play flowed equally well during those sessions. This is an observation from that review, not a universal benchmark covering every Switch 2 console, television and future update.

The review also notes that some original camera problems remain. A perfect docked signal, clean filter or remapped control cannot remove behavior that was part of the underlying game. If a camera feels awkward after you have confirmed the controls, test the same scene in another display mode before assuming the console is malfunctioning.
