A card outside the Reserved List is eligible for a reprint, but Wizards says that does not mean it plans to reprint it. Print history and set fit can inform a cautious assessment; neither establishes reliable odds.
What counts as a reprint?
For a practical check, first decide whether you mean a new printing of the same card or a card that is merely similar. A different name, updated wording, or related design may resemble the original without being an exact reprint. Wizards’ design commentary discusses shifts in flavor, creature type, and templates, so compare the actual card identity rather than relying on resemblance alone.
Use Gatherer, which Wizards Support identifies as its official card database, to find the card, review its history, and check rulings. Note the name and, if there is any ambiguity, the rules text and printing you mean.
Check the Reserved List first
Compare the card with Wizards’ Official Reprint Policy and current Reserved List. Wizards says listed cards will not be printed again in a functionally identical form. Its policy defines functional identity by card type, subtypes, abilities, mana cost, power, and toughness. It also says the Reserved List will not gain cards and that no cards will be removed from it.

#1 Best Overall
- Includes a mix of AT LEAST 25 Rares/Uncommons which is half of the cards.
- Absolutely NO... Basic lands, Foreign, or silver/gold bordered cards.
- Some may contain Foils or Mythics but not all.
- Sets can range from Beta to the current Magic the Gathering set.
- Mint/Excellent condition only.
The policy applies to physical printed cards and tournament-legal Magic cards; Wizards separately notes special-purpose versions not intended for regular gameplay. So Reserved List status is a meaningful policy constraint, but avoid turning it into the broader claim that a card’s name or concept can never appear in any form.
If the card is not listed
It is eligible for reprinting under the policy, not scheduled for one. Wizards explicitly says that a card’s exclusion from the Reserved List does not indicate plans to reprint it. Eligibility is a policy status, not a forecast.

Look for an official announcement
Search Wizards’ product archive and official set announcements for the relevant release. Follow the card-list links for products that could plausibly include the card. A named appearance in an official list confirms that printing; a card missing from the materials available at the time of your check is simply unannounced there.
These pages change as products and card lists are published. Record when you checked them, and do not treat a card’s absence from currently available announcements as a promise that it will not be reprinted later.

Use history and set fit as context, not odds
Gatherer can show where a card has appeared before. Prior printings establish that Wizards has used the card in those products, but they do not provide a dependable probability or timetable for another printing.
Set fit can help explain why a reprint might make sense: Wizards has described reprints as tools for supporting enjoyable gameplay, giving players access to cards, reusing familiar designs, and conserving design space. A card’s mechanics, role in gameplay, or thematic fit may therefore be relevant context. They are reasons a card could be selected, not evidence that it has been selected.

In a 2020 retrospective on the 81 futureshifted cards in 2007’s Future Sight, Mark Rosewater used categories including “likely,” “unlikely,” “very unlikely,” and “already reprinted.” He defined “likely” as a card he could see being reprinted “in the right environment.” That is a retrospective judgment about individual cards, not a general model for calculating future reprint odds. The sources establish no general percentage, expected interval, or reliable price effect.

Separate what is confirmed from what is inferred. For example: “The card is not on the Reserved List, so it is eligible under Wizards’ policy. It has appeared in [specific prior printing] and could fit [specific set context], but I found no official announcement naming it in the materials checked on [date]. These clues do not establish how likely a future reprint is.”
If the card is on the Reserved List, state the policy’s functional-identity restriction rather than saying that its name can never appear in any special-purpose form. If no card is named, this method can explain how to check, but it cannot support a card-specific likelihood assessment.
