To make sense of it, check the compass before interpreting screen directions, and separate four controls: pan moves the area in view, zoom changes its scale, rotation changes the camera’s heading, and tilt changes its viewing angle. If the perspective becomes confusing, reset north or switch to a top-down 2D view.
What changes when a 3D map rotates?
A useful way to picture a 3D map is as a flat map seen by a camera angled above it. Apple’s MapKit documentation describes the view in terms of the camera’s altitude, pitch, heading, and center: altitude is camera height; pitch is its angle relative to the ground; heading is the direction it faces; and center is the map point at the middle of the screen. With zero pitch, the camera looks straight down, producing a standard 2D view. Apple Developer: Displaying Maps
When heading changes, the map turns beneath the camera. The top of the screen may no longer represent north, so “left,” “right,” “up,” and “down” are screen directions rather than reliable compass directions. Use the compass or orientation indicator to understand which way the view faces.
Know which navigation action you need
- Pan: Move the map to look at a different place. The camera’s view center changes; the map is not necessarily rotating.
- Zoom: Show a larger or smaller area. Depending on the app, zooming out far enough may switch a map into a globe view.
- Rotate or change heading: Turn the view horizontally so the camera faces a different direction. The map’s apparent orientation changes.
- Tilt or change pitch: Angle the camera away from straight down, making buildings or terrain appear in perspective.
These actions can be combined, but using one at a time makes it easier to tell what changed. For example, pan to a landmark first, then tilt to inspect it, and rotate only if you need a different approach direction.

How to navigate in Google Earth on a computer
Google Earth’s desktop controls are product-specific; mouse gestures and keyboard shortcuts should not be assumed to work the same way in every map app. Its documented controls provide a practical example:
- Use Search to find a place.
- Drag with the mouse to move around. Use the bottom-right plus and minus controls, or right-drag, to zoom.
- Hold Ctrl while dragging to explore around your location. Google Earth Help also documents left-click-and-drag to look in a direction, mouse-wheel or touchpad scrolling to zoom, and pressing r after clicking the map to return to the default view.
- Use the 3D/2D control to switch between top-down and orbiting 3D views.
- Click the compass to restore a true-north-facing view.
Google Earth documents different tilt gestures for Mac and Windows/Linux, so consult its instructions for your operating system rather than relying on a single universal gesture. See Google Earth: Navigate the globe and Google Earth Help: Explore the Earth on your computer.

How to navigate in Apple Maps on iPhone
Apple Maps uses touch gestures on iPhone. To move the map, drag with one finger; pinch open or closed to zoom. Apple also documents double-tapping and then dragging up or down as another way to zoom.
- Rotate: Touch and hold with two fingers, then rotate them.
- Adjust the angle: Drag two fingers up or down to change the angle of a 3D map.
- Show north: Tap the compass after rotating the map.
- Return to a flat view: Tap 2D.
When zoomed out, the map may change into a globe that you can drag to rotate. Apple notes that immersive map features are not available in every country or region. See Apple Support: Explore maps with immersive views on iPhone.

How to get your bearings back
- Check the compass. It tells you how the current view is oriented. On Apple Maps for iPhone, the compass shows north after rotation; in Google Earth, clicking the compass restores a true-north-facing globe.
- Reset to north if needed. Use the app’s compass or north-reset control before judging which direction a road or landmark lies.
- Switch to top-down or 2D for a clearer layout. A straight-down view is often easier for comparing locations and routes without perspective.
- Rotate in smaller steps. Once the map is easy to read again, make a modest heading change and recheck the compass.
Google Maps’ JavaScript 3D map interface exposes controls for zoom, moving the map center, changing camera heading, adjusting tilt, and resetting to a northerly heading. This describes controls in the Maps JavaScript API, not necessarily the consumer Google Maps app. See Google for Developers: 3D map controls and exploration.

Why gestures may not work as expected
- You are using a different app or device. Similar actions may use different mouse, keyboard, or touch inputs. Follow the instructions for the specific interface rather than treating one product’s gestures as a standard.
- The view has rotated. Screen directions may not match compass directions; check the orientation indicator or reset north.
- The view is tilted. Perspective can make relative positions harder to judge. Return to 2D or top-down before comparing locations.
- 3D imagery is unavailable in your area. Availability varies by product and, for Apple’s immersive map features, by country or region.
