To check whether a game will run on your PC, compare the game’s current official system requirements with your computer’s operating system, processor, memory, graphics card, storage, and any required graphics features. On Windows, the built-in DirectX Diagnostic Tool (DxDiag) shows many of those details. Meeting the listed minimum is a useful screening check—not a promise of smooth play, a particular frame rate, or a specific resolution.
1. Find the game’s current system requirements
Start with the listing for the exact game and edition you plan to play. Check its current store page or the publisher’s support page, and note the minimum and recommended requirements separately. Record the required operating system, processor, memory, graphics hardware, storage space, and any named DirectX version or graphics feature. Requirements can differ by game and edition, so an old or undated third-party listing may not describe the version you intend to buy.
2. Find your PC’s specifications in Windows
- Open DxDiag: Search Windows for
dxdiag, or pressWindows + R, typedxdiag, and press Enter. Confirm the prompt if one appears. - Check the System tab: Note the Windows version, processor, installed memory, and DirectX version. - Check the Display tab: Note the graphics adapter name and driver version and date. On some computers, separate Display tabs or sections may appear for more than one adapter. Steam’s driver guidance identifies the Display tab as a place to find the device and driver details. Steam Support: Updating Drivers
- Check storage separately: Open File Explorer and check the free space on the drive where you plan to install the game. Compare free capacity with the game’s stated storage requirement.
DxDiag helps identify your hardware and software; it does not decide whether a particular game will perform well on that PC.

3. Compare matching specifications
Compare each requirement with the corresponding PC detail. Use the full model names where possible; a shared brand name or a similar-looking number is not enough to establish that two components are equivalent.

For an unclear CPU or GPU comparison, look up the complete model through the publisher or hardware maker rather than guessing from a similar product name. Steam also warns that a DirectX version shown in Windows does not, on its own, prove that the graphics hardware supports a game’s required DirectX or pixel-shader features. 4. Interpret the comparison carefully
If your PC meets the minimum requirements
That means it meets the game’s stated baseline on paper. It does not guarantee a particular FPS, resolution, graphics preset, or consistently smooth performance. Valve’s Steam Support puts it plainly: “Simply meeting the system requirements does not mean you’ll have high FPS or strong in-game performance.” The requirements are general guidance, not a benchmark for every PC configuration.
If your PC is near or below the minimum
A small apparent gap is not proof that the game will launch or play acceptably. Steam notes that a system at or near the requirements may still have launch or performance problems. Steam Support: Games do not run after “Preparing to Launch”

Identify the specific shortfall—such as OS, CPU, RAM, graphics hardware, storage, or a required feature—before deciding what to do. There is no universal upgrade that fixes every mismatch. In particular, laptops and prebuilt PCs may have limited upgrade options; compatibility depends on the exact computer, components, power supply, and chassis.
If your PC uses integrated graphics
Check the exact integrated graphics model against the game’s listed GPU requirements. Many notebooks use integrated graphics, which are generally less powerful than dedicated graphics, but performance depends on the specific chip and game. The fact that DxDiag displays an adapter or DirectX version is not enough to establish that it matches a listed graphics card.

5. If the game struggles despite meeting requirements
- Check graphics drivers. Look for a compatible update from NVIDIA, AMD, Intel, or your PC manufacturer, as appropriate. An old driver can cause problems even when the hardware meets the listed requirements.
- Confirm the active graphics adapter. On a system with integrated and dedicated graphics, check that the game is using the intended adapter.
- Use the game’s support guidance. Diagnose the actual symptom—such as failure to launch or poor performance—instead of assuming a component upgrade is needed.
