A Switch 2 upgrade pack is worth buying when its specific improvements matter to you at the price you will actually pay. First check whether you own the original Switch game, whether the pack is included with your Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership, and what the pack adds for that game. Features and prices vary by title, so another game’s deal is not a reliable guide.
What a Switch 2 upgrade pack includes
An upgrade pack adds Switch 2 Edition features to a compatible Nintendo Switch game you already own. The Switch 2 Edition bundle combines the original Switch game and its upgrade pack; buying the pack alone does not provide the base game. Nintendo says the original game remains playable on Switch, while Switch 2 Edition features are exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2. See Nintendo’s upgrade instructions and availability details.

Only select games have upgrade packs. Check the listing for the exact game and confirm whether your physical or digital copy qualifies before buying. For example, Nintendo’s Tears of the Kingdom upgrade-pack listing says the original game is required.
How to decide if the price is worth it
- Confirm you have access to the base game. If you own the original Switch game, check that the pack supports it. If you do not own it, compare the cost of buying the game and pack separately with a Switch 2 Edition bundle.
- Find your effective price. Look up the pack on its game-specific Nintendo listing. Check whether your active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership includes that particular pack; membership does not make every upgrade free.
- Identify the improvement you will use. Decide whether the listed visual or performance changes, new controls, gameplay features, online options, or companion-app tools matter to you. An enhancement you will not notice or use adds little personal value.
- Compare the price with that benefit. If you already own the game, weigh the pack’s price against the improvements you expect to use. If you do not, compare the total cost of game plus pack with a bundled Switch 2 Edition.
For a US-specific price example, Nintendo Support listed the Tears of the Kingdom upgrade pack at $9.99 USD when checked on October 4, 2026; the page also says active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members can download it at no additional charge. This is a title-specific listing, not a standard price for all upgrade packs. Check Nintendo Support’s Tears of the Kingdom DLC information for the current details.

What different packs can add
Official listings show why it is important to judge each pack on its own merits. The features below are Nintendo Store descriptions, not independent performance-test results.
| Game | Listed pack features | Price or access detail |
|---|---|---|
| Subnautica | Enhanced resolution, higher frame rate, and Joy-Con 2 mouse controls | Free to owners of the Switch game, according to Nintendo’s listing |
| Animal Crossing: New Horizons | Enhanced resolution, mouse controls, a microphone-enabled megaphone, and expanded online play features | Not stated in the cited listing |
| Card-en-Ciel | Increased frame rates, a 4K mode, and mouse support | Not stated in the cited listing |
| Hollow Knight | Higher resolution, improved frame rates, and additional effects | Not stated in the cited listing |
The cited listings describe what each pack offers, but they do not provide comparable independent benchmarks across games. Treat advertised performance and visual enhancements as Nintendo’s stated features, not as measured guarantees about how noticeable they will be on your setup.

If you do not own the original game
Compare the total price of the original Switch game plus its upgrade pack against the bundled Switch 2 Edition. Nintendo says physical Switch 2 Edition game cards include both the Switch game and upgrade pack; that is a complete game bundle, not a physical copy of the upgrade pack alone. See the Nintendo Canada Switch 2 FAQ for the physical-card contents and compatibility details.
If you already own the original game, a bundle is not automatically the better comparison: focus on the upgrade pack’s price, your membership eligibility, and the features you want.

A practical verdict
Buy the pack if you can use it with a game you own, its effective price fits your budget, and its specific additions are worth that cost to you. If the pack is included with your active membership, or is free to eligible owners, the price calculation changes; if its headline features do not interest you, even a low price may not be worthwhile. Check the exact game listing rather than extrapolating from another title.
