How to Check Whether a PC Game Can Hold 60 FPS at 4K

The only reliable way to know whether your PC can sustain 60 FPS at 4K is to test the actual game at the exact output resolution, graphics settings and frame-generation mode you plan to use. Generic system requirements, a short run through an easy area or a high average FPS number cannot prove that demanding gameplay will stay smooth. Use a repeatable heavy scene, capture average and low or percentile performance, watch frame times and load, then repeat the same test after every change.

What “60 FPS at 4K” should mean

A useful result answers more than “the counter reached 60.” It identifies the game version, 4K output setting, graphics preset, important individual options, upscaling mode and whether frame generation was enabled. It also distinguishes the game’s underlying frame rate from frames created after rendering.

For this guide, “holds 60 FPS” means that the tested gameplay section delivers a generally stable experience around the 60-FPS target, without recurring drops or obvious frame-time spikes. An average close to 60 can still hide frequent dips. Conversely, a brief peak above 60 in a menu or quiet opening area says little about the heaviest fight, traversal sequence or city district later in the game.

There is no universal hardware requirement that guarantees 4K/60 in every PC game. The result depends on the particular engine, game version, scene, graphics features, CPU, GPU, memory and scaling technology. Treat any conclusion as a tested combination, not a permanent property of the computer.

Record the test conditions before launching the game

Write down the variables that can change the result. If you later compare a setting or another PC, keep these values identical unless the change is deliberate.

Variable What to record Why it matters
Output 4K display/output setting used by the game A lower internal or output resolution is not the same test.
Graphics preset The selected preset and any custom changes Presets can alter many rendering features at once.
Ray tracing Whether it is enabled and which options are active Ray-traced effects can materially change GPU load.
Upscaling Off or the named quality mode Upscaling changes internal rendering work and image quality.
Frame generation Off or enabled, with the technology identified Generated frames must be reported separately from base game FPS.
Frame cap and synchronization Any in-game cap, driver cap or synchronization setting A cap can make a counter look stable while masking available performance.
Game and system state Game version and the same driver or system configuration when comparing runs Updates and configuration changes can affect results.

Do not change several of these at once if you are trying to identify a bottleneck. A result is most useful when another person could reproduce the route and settings from your notes.

Step-by-step: test a game for sustained 4K/60

1. Define the target precisely

Start with the experience you actually want to play. If the goal is native rendering, disable the upscaler and record that choice. If the goal is a practical 4K output using an upscaler, name its quality mode. If frame generation is part of the plan, record it explicitly and plan to report both the generated counter and the underlying base rate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose whether you are testing a fixed 60-FPS cap or simply asking whether the system can stay at or above 60. Keep that choice consistent in every run. Note ray tracing separately rather than hiding it inside a broad “ultra” label.

2. Choose a demanding, repeatable section

Use the game’s built-in benchmark when it resembles the gameplay you care about. A benchmark that only shows a quiet camera sweep may not represent combat, streaming or traversal. If there is no suitable benchmark, save the game at a repeatable location and replay the same route: for example, the same busy street, encounter or effects-heavy arena.

Include the type of workload that normally causes slowdowns. A static menu, loading screen, empty room or the first few minutes of a tutorial is an easy scene, not evidence of a sustained result. Run long enough to include heavier moments and use the identical route after each settings change.

3. Display and capture the right metrics

You need more than an FPS number. Show or log average FPS, a low or percentile result, frame-time behavior, CPU and GPU activity, and memory information. Steam’s official In-Game Overlay Performance Monitor can display FPS, CPU performance, GPU performance and system RAM, and is intended to help identify whether CPU or GPU load is influencing performance. Its documentation also distinguishes a frame-rate reading that includes generated frames from the base game frame rate. See Steam’s Performance Monitor documentation.

For a recorded run, NVIDIA FrameView captures average and percentile FPS and logs system details such as resolution. The available guide is titled FrameView 1.1 User Guide; check the current release and supported features before relying on version-specific behavior. The guide is available as a PDF at NVIDIA’s FrameView documentation.

Owners of supported NVIDIA software can also use the NVIDIA App’s in-game performance overlay, which can show frame rates, clock speeds, GPU temperatures and other metrics. NVIDIA’s support page, updated August 4, 2025, documents Alt+R as the default overlay shortcut and Alt+Shift+R for cycling metrics; shortcuts and interface labels can change, so verify them in the current app. The support instructions are at NVIDIA’s in-game performance overlay page.

On supported Radeon configurations, AMD’s Game Advisor can produce a report with average FPS and a 95th-percentile measure. Availability depends on the title and configuration; consult AMD’s Game Advisor documentation before assuming the feature is present.

4. Run the same route long enough to expose heavy scenes

Start the capture before entering the demanding section, complete the route, and save the result. A single pass can be misleading if a shader compiles unusually late or an asset-streaming event occurs just outside the route. More passes improve confidence, especially when the first run includes one-time loading work. The key requirement is consistency: use the same start point, actions, camera path and settings for every comparison.

Watch the screen as well as the log. A visible hitch, uneven camera motion or sudden pause matters even if the displayed average remains near 60. Make a note of where it happens so you can retest that exact moment after an adjustment.

5. Examine average, lows, percentiles and frame times together

Observation What it tells you What to do next
Average near or above 60, low/percentile values also close to the target, consistent frame times The tested route appears to meet the target with few significant drops. Confirm the same behavior in another demanding section before treating the result as representative.
Average near 60 but recurring low values or visible spikes The system is not delivering a consistently smooth 60-FPS experience. Locate the scene causing the drops and change one relevant setting.
Average well above 60 but a very low percentile Short, severe stutters are being hidden by the average. Investigate frame-time spikes, shader compilation, streaming and background activity.
Average below 60 with high GPU load The GPU is a likely limiter in that scene. Test lower GPU-heavy options or upscaling before considering a graphics-card upgrade.
Average below 60 without consistently high GPU load The cause may be CPU-side work, memory pressure, software activity, temperature or power behavior. Check those possibilities before assuming a new GPU will solve it.

Percentile data is useful because it exposes the severity and frequency of slow frames that an average conceals. Do not treat measurements from different overlays as automatically interchangeable: capture rules, frame caps, synchronization and whether generated frames are counted can differ.

6. Identify the likely limiter

If GPU utilization stays high while the game misses 60, the graphics processor may be the constraint. Test a GPU-heavy option at a lower level or enable an upscaler, then repeat the exact route. A meaningful improvement supports the GPU-limited interpretation.

If GPU activity is not consistently high, inspect CPU load and any CPU-side metric provided by the monitor. A game can be limited by one busy CPU thread even when an overall CPU percentage looks moderate. Memory pressure, shader compilation, background tasks, temperature limits, power limits and game-specific problems are also possibilities. Overlay readings are diagnostic clues, not a complete controlled hardware comparison.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

System RAM and video-memory readings help explain sudden stalls or texture-streaming problems, but a reading alone does not prove the cause. Correlate it with the exact moment of the hitch and repeat the route after closing background applications or changing one setting.

7. Change one setting and rerun

Make a single controlled adjustment: reduce a demanding rendering option, alter the upscaler quality, or disable a costly feature such as ray tracing. Leave the route, game version, cap, synchronization and measurement tool unchanged. Run the same section again and compare average FPS, low or percentile FPS, frame times and image quality.

Changing five options at once may produce a faster result, but it will not tell you which compromise mattered. Once you understand the dominant limiter, you can make a larger preset change and perform a fresh full-route validation.

How to interpret native rendering, upscaling and frame generation

Native 4K

Native rendering means the game renders at the chosen 4K output without an upscaler. This is the clearest answer to “can this PC render the game at 4K/60?” Record the preset, ray-tracing options and measured lows alongside the average.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4K output with upscaling

An upscaler renders internally at a different workload and reconstructs the image for the 4K output. It can change both performance and image quality. Report the specific quality mode rather than simply saying “4K,” because a 4K output using an upscaler is a different test from native 4K.

Frame generation enabled

Frame generation creates additional displayed frames from rendered frames. A counter that includes those frames can show a higher number than the base game is producing. Always state whether the reported result includes generated frames and provide the base game measurement when the tool exposes it. A generated 60-FPS reading is not equivalent to a native or upscaled base rate of 60 FPS.

Common test failures and how to fix them

The result looks good in a benchmark but not during play

Rebuild the test around actual demanding gameplay. Use a repeatable combat, traversal or densely populated route rather than relying solely on a synthetic camera pass. Keep the benchmark result as a separate data point; do not use it to claim that the entire game holds 60.

The average is 60, but the game feels uneven

Check the low or percentile value and frame-time graph. Record the location of each hitch, then repeat that section. Lowering a single setting that affects the offending scene can be more effective than dropping the entire preset.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Two overlays show different FPS

Confirm whether either counter includes generated frames, whether a cap or synchronization setting is active, and whether both tools measured the same time window. Select one tool for before-and-after testing and keep it consistent. Do not combine values from different definitions into one comparison table.

A graphics-card upgrade seems tempting, but the evidence is unclear

Do not buy on the basis of the target resolution alone. First establish that GPU load is consistently the limiter and that lowering GPU-heavy settings or using an upscaler improves the same route. If the game is CPU-limited, memory-limited or affected by shader compilation or background activity, a GPU upgrade may not address the dips.

The game misses 60 with no obvious bottleneck

Repeat after checking background tasks, temperatures, power behavior, memory pressure and shader-compilation events. Verify that the game is using the intended resolution and settings, and test another demanding route. Some causes are game-specific; a single overlay snapshot cannot identify them with certainty.

How to state your result accurately

A useful report is specific enough for another player to understand exactly what was tested. Include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Game title and version.
  • 4K output setting and graphics preset.
  • Ray-tracing status and any important custom options.
  • Native rendering or the exact upscaler mode.
  • Frame-generation status, with base and generated readings separated when available.
  • Test route or built-in benchmark name and run duration.
  • Average FPS, low or percentile FPS and notable frame-time spikes.
  • CPU/GPU load and memory observations that help explain the result.

A precise conclusion can look like this:

In game version [version], the tested route held roughly 60 FPS at the 4K output with [preset], [ray-tracing setting], and [native/upscaler mode]. Frame generation was [off/on]; the reported counter [did/did not] include generated frames. The average was [value], the low or percentile result was [value], and the main drops occurred in [scene]. This result applies to the tested route and settings, not automatically to every area of the game.

Keep the bracketed variables inside code when using the template; replace them with your measured values in a published report.

Decision framework: does the PC meet the target?

Measured outcome Decision
Average and low/percentile results stay around 60 with consistent frame times The tested combination appears to meet 4K/60 in that scene. Qualify it by game version, settings and route.
Average reaches 60, but lows or frame times show recurring dips It does not yet demonstrate a consistently smooth 60-FPS experience. Tune the settings tied to the problem scene and retest.
Below 60 with GPU limitation indicated Try lower GPU-heavy settings or upscaling. Consider a graphics-card upgrade only after confirming that the game and budget justify it; no particular model is guaranteed by this test alone.
Below 60 without a clear GPU limitation Investigate CPU load, memory pressure, shader compilation, background tasks, temperature, power constraints and game-specific behavior before replacing the GPU.

Comparing two PCs fairly

Run both systems at the same game version, 4K output, graphics settings, upscaling and frame-generation mode. Use the same save, route, run duration and measurement tool. Compare average FPS, low or percentile FPS, frame-time behavior and image quality together. A higher average is not automatically the better experience if the other system has steadier frame times or fewer severe dips.

Document caps, synchronization and background conditions. If one machine reports generated frames and the other reports base frames, the numbers are not an apples-to-apples comparison until the measurement definitions match.

What the test can—and cannot—prove

A repeatable run can show whether a particular PC, game version, settings combination and scene met the target under measured conditions. It can reveal likely CPU or GPU constraints and show whether a specific adjustment helps. It cannot guarantee identical performance in every level, future patch or driver version, and it cannot establish a universal 4K/60 hardware requirement for all PC games.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the result as a controlled answer to a practical question: “Can this configuration hold the target in the way I intend to play?” When the answer is no, measurement tells you whether to trade image quality, use scaling, investigate a non-GPU issue or consider hardware—not a generic requirement line.
