For a PS5 game targeting 60 frames per second, a display that supports 60 Hz at your chosen resolution is enough. A 120 Hz screen is optional: it matters only when a game and display mode can output more than 60 frames per second. Choose resolution and screen size according to your viewing distance, room and budget, then verify the exact HDMI input supports the signal you want. VRR and ALLM are useful extras, not requirements for a steady 60 FPS target.

The safest buying order is: decide where you will sit, choose 1080p, 1440p or 4K, confirm 60 Hz support, then check optional 120 Hz, VRR, ALLM and port compatibility. The same method works whether you buy a television or a gaming monitor.

What a 60 FPS PS5 game actually needs

Frame rate and refresh rate describe different parts of the chain. The game produces frames; the display refreshes its panel. If the game is designed to output 60 FPS and the screen accepts 60 Hz at that resolution, the display can show that target correctly. A 120 Hz panel does not make a 60 FPS game run at 120 FPS by itself.

Higher refresh becomes relevant when a particular game offers a 120 FPS mode and the PS5, cable, input and display all support that mode. PlayStation documentation describes PS5 output up to 120 Hz when a compatible game and display support it. Treat 120 Hz as headroom for selected titles, not as a prerequisite for ordinary 60 FPS play.

Baseline specification

  • Refresh rate: at least 60 Hz at the resolution you intend to use.
  • Resolution: 1080p, 1440p or 4K, selected for viewing distance, screen size and budget.
  • Input: an HDMI port whose specifications explicitly support your chosen resolution and refresh rate.
  • Connection: start with the HDMI cable supplied with the PS5 and connect directly to the display.

Optional features

  • 120 Hz: useful for games and modes that output above 60 FPS.
  • VRR: synchronizes the display’s refresh with the PS5’s output on compatible HDMI 2.1 displays; results vary by display and game.
  • ALLM: can switch a compatible television into its low-latency game mode automatically. The name and behavior vary by manufacturer.

Choose the resolution before shopping for a screen

Resolution affects image detail, the screen size that makes sense and the bandwidth your HDMI connection must carry. It is not a requirement for reaching 60 FPS: a 1080p, 1440p or 4K display can be suitable if it accepts the PS5 signal at 60 Hz.

1080p

1080p is the simplest choice when the budget is tight, the screen is relatively small or you sit farther away. Confirm that the display accepts 1080p at 60 Hz over HDMI. A 1080p screen will not show a native 4K image, so do not pay for a higher-bandwidth connection you cannot use.

1440p (QHD)

PS5 supports 1440p output on compatible displays. Sony states that the display needs 1440p and 60 Hz support at minimum for that output. Many gaming monitors use this resolution, making it a practical middle ground between 1080p and 4K.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the PS5’s built-in 1440p output test after connecting a monitor. It checks whether the display accepts 1440p at the available refresh rates. Passing the 60 Hz portion confirms the baseline needed for a 60 FPS target; any 120 Hz result is an additional capability.

  • Responsive!!: Up to 0.5ms GTG (Gray to Gray) response time enhanced gamers’ in-game experience. No matter the fast-moving action or any dramatic transitions will be all rendered smoothly without the annoying effects of smearing or ghosting with KG271U Gaming Monitor.
  • New Depths of Color Accuracy: is monitor is ideal for color-critical projects producing accurate colors, supporting DCI-P3 95%. An amazing monitor for graphic designers, photographers, and film editors.

4K

4K is appropriate when you want finer detail on a larger screen or sit close enough to see the extra pixels, and when the price fits your budget. It is not required for 60 FPS. If you also want 4K at 120 Hz, every link in the chain must support that signal: the PS5 output, cable, the specific HDMI port and the display’s operating mode.

TV or monitor: compare the use case, not a presumed winner

Official compatibility information establishes what PS5 can output, but it does not establish a universal television-versus-monitor winner or independent input-lag rankings. Select the form factor that fits your room and the way you play.

Decision factor Television tends to fit when… Monitor tends to fit when…
Viewing distance You play from a sofa or across a room and need a larger viewing area. You sit at a desk or only a short distance from the screen.
Screen size You want a large single screen for games, films and shared viewing. You prefer a compact screen that fits a desk and close viewing.
Resolution choices You are considering 4K at a larger size. You are considering 1440p or a smaller 4K panel.
Refresh options You want 60 Hz as the baseline and possibly 120 Hz for supported games. You want to compare 60 Hz and 120 Hz modes in a desk setup.
Automatic game mode ALLM may switch a compatible TV to its low-latency mode. Check the monitor’s own game-mode controls; do not assume ALLM behavior.
Ports Verify which HDMI input supports the desired resolution and refresh rate; ports may not all be equivalent. Verify the exact HDMI input and whether its advertised refresh rate applies to console signals.

Do not infer response time, image quality or input latency from the category alone. Check model-level specifications and independent measurements if those factors matter to you; the compatibility evidence available here does not rank particular panels or models.

Do you need a 120 Hz TV for PS5?

No. A 60 Hz display is sufficient for a game targeting 60 FPS. Buy 120 Hz when you specifically want access to PS5 games that provide a 120 FPS mode, or when you value the option for future compatible titles. The game must offer the mode, and the console must be configured to use it.

  • 27-inch 2560 x 1440 HDR gaming monitor with ultrafast 180Hz refresh rate designed for professional gamers and immersive gameplay
  • ASUS Fast IPS technology enables a 1ms response time (GTG) for sharp gaming visuals with high frame rates
  • ASUS Extreme Low Motion Blur Sync (ELMB SYNC) technology enables ELMB together with variable refresh rate, eliminating ghosting and tearing for sharp gaming visuals with high frame rates.
  • DisplayWidget Center enables easy OSD access and monitor settings adjustments with a mouse.
  • USB Type-C hub supports video transmission in DisplayPort signal; can serve as a USB hub, meaning that you can connect your device to your wired peripherals with clutter-free set-up

When a game has separate quality and performance modes, read the game’s own description. A 120 Hz display cannot force a quality-mode game to produce 120 frames per second. Conversely, a display limited to 60 Hz cannot show the full benefit of a supported 120 FPS mode.

What to verify for 120 Hz

  • The display’s specification says the relevant HDMI input accepts 120 Hz at your chosen resolution.
  • The PS5 is connected directly, without an intermediate receiver, switch or capture device that may limit bandwidth.
  • The cable is rated for the signal. Start with the cable included with the PS5; use an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable when Sony’s guidance and the desired mode call for one.
  • The game has a 120 FPS or high-frame-rate mode and that mode is enabled in the game’s settings.
  • PS5 video-output settings are not forcing a lower refresh rate.

VRR and ALLM: useful extras with conditions

VRR

Variable refresh rate (VRR) dynamically synchronizes the display’s refresh with the PS5’s graphical output. Hideaki Nishino, then CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Platform Business Group, described it this way in a PlayStation.Blog post dated April 25, 2022: “On HDMI 2.1 VRR-compatible TVs and PC monitors, VRR dynamically syncs the refresh rate of the display to the PS5 console’s graphical output.”

VRR is optional for 60 FPS gaming. It can help when a compatible game does not hold a perfectly even frame rate, but Sony notes that effects vary depending on the display and game. Look for explicit PS5 and HDMI 2.1 VRR support rather than assuming a monitor’s generic “adaptive sync” label will work with the console.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

ALLM

Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) allows a compatible television to switch automatically to its game mode. Sony identifies ALLM as an option for compatible TVs. Manufacturers may use different names, menus or behavior, so check the exact model’s specification and settings. If a TV lacks ALLM, you can normally select its game picture mode manually; the absence of automatic switching does not prevent 60 FPS output.

Check HDMI ports, not just the box headline

A display can advertise 4K, 120 Hz or VRR while only one of its HDMI inputs supports a particular combination. Read the full port table in the manufacturer’s specification and identify the input you will actually use.

Signals to confirm

  • 1080p at 60 Hz for a basic setup.
  • 1440p at 60 Hz if you plan to use QHD output.
  • 1440p at 120 Hz if you want that optional mode and the model lists console support.
  • 4K at 60 Hz for standard 4K gaming.
  • 4K at 120 Hz only when the specific HDMI input, cable and display mode all support it.
  • VRR and ALLM on the same input and at the resolution you intend to use.

Do not assume that a port labeled “gaming” supports every advertised feature, or that all ports on the same display are identical. Confirm whether the feature works simultaneously; some displays restrict VRR, HDR or maximum resolution when another mode is enabled.

How to set up and test the PS5 display

  1. Connect directly. Plug the PS5 into the display’s identified gaming-capable HDMI input. Begin with the cable supplied with the console.
  2. Open video settings. On PS5, go to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output.
  3. Set resolution. Leave Resolution on Automatic initially, or choose the resolution your display is confirmed to support. For a QHD monitor, run 1440p Output Test and select the highest mode that passes reliably.
  4. Check 120 Hz. Set 120 Hz Output to Automatic if the display and game support it. This setting does not raise a 60 FPS game’s frame rate.
  5. Enable VRR only when compatible. Set VRR to Automatic if the display is a compatible HDMI 2.1 model. If you see flicker, blanking or an unstable image, turn it off and test the game again.
  6. Configure ALLM. Leave ALLM on Automatic when the television supports it, or select the TV’s game mode manually if automatic switching is unavailable.
  7. Test in the game. Enable the game’s performance or 120 FPS mode where offered. Test more than one title because refresh, VRR and frame-rate behavior are game-dependent.

If 4K/120 Hz does not work

A failed 4K/120 signal does not automatically mean the display is incompatible. Work through the connection from the console outward.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Verify the port. Move the PS5 to the HDMI input that the display’s manual identifies for 4K/120 or HDMI 2.1. Check whether other ports are limited to 4K/60.
  2. Remove intermediaries. Connect the PS5 directly to the display. Temporarily bypass an AV receiver, soundbar, HDMI switch, capture device or wall plate.
  3. Reseat both ends. Disconnect and reconnect the cable firmly, then power-cycle the PS5 and display.
  4. Use the supplied cable first. Sony recommends the cable included with the PS5. If the desired signal still fails, try an appropriately rated Ultra High Speed HDMI cable.
  5. Update firmware. Install available display and PS5 system updates, then repeat the test.
  6. Review PS5 output settings. In Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output, return Resolution and 120 Hz Output to Automatic, disable a conflicting setting temporarily and test again.
  7. Check the game’s mode. Confirm that the title actually offers a 120 FPS option and that it is enabled. A 60 FPS-only game will remain 60 FPS.
  8. Reduce one variable. Test 4K/60 first. If that works, try 4K/120; then test VRR. This isolates whether the problem is resolution, refresh rate or variable-refresh compatibility.

If the display repeatedly loses signal, use the stable 60 Hz mode while checking the manufacturer’s support documentation. Do not buy a replacement cable by default; the port, firmware, intermediate equipment and settings are equally common causes.

A practical buying checklist

For a straightforward 60 FPS setup

  • 60 Hz support at the chosen resolution.
  • An HDMI input explicitly supporting the PS5 signal.
  • A size that suits your viewing distance.
  • Enough HDMI inputs for your console and other devices.
  • A direct connection path or equipment known not to limit the signal.

For a 1440p monitor

  • Native 2560×1440 resolution and confirmed PS5 1440p/60 support.
  • A documented 120 Hz console mode if you want optional high-frame-rate gaming.
  • VRR support that explicitly includes PS5 or HDMI 2.1 where required.
  • Speakers or a headphone connection if the monitor has no useful built-in audio.
  • A stand or mount that places the panel at a comfortable desk distance.

For a 4K television

  • 4K/60 support on the HDMI input you will use.
  • 4K/120 support on a specific HDMI 2.1 input if that feature matters.
  • VRR and ALLM listed for the same input and relevant picture mode.
  • A size and seating distance that make 4K detail worthwhile.
  • Manual game-mode controls in case ALLM is unavailable or unreliable.

Decision examples

You play from a desk and only care about 60 FPS

Choose a monitor that accepts 60 Hz at 1080p or 1440p. Spend first on a comfortable size and viewing distance. 120 Hz and VRR can remain optional upgrades.

You sit on a sofa and want one screen for the room

A television is the natural form factor. Confirm 4K/60 on the intended HDMI input, then decide whether 120 Hz, VRR or ALLM justify the additional cost for the games you play.

You want competitive titles with 120 FPS modes

Prioritize a model whose exact HDMI input supports 120 Hz at the resolution you plan to use. Confirm the game’s mode, use a direct connection and test the result rather than relying on the product’s headline refresh number.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You already own a 60 Hz display

Keep it if it accepts the PS5’s chosen resolution at 60 Hz and produces a stable image. Upgrade only for a specific need such as larger size, higher resolution, 120 Hz modes or VRR compatibility.

Common buying mistakes

  • Buying 120 Hz for a 60 FPS-only library: the extra refresh rate is unused unless a game offers a higher-frame-rate mode.
  • Assuming every HDMI port is equivalent: check the exact input’s resolution and refresh limits.
  • Treating 4K as a frame-rate requirement: resolution and frame rate are separate choices.
  • Assuming VRR fixes every performance problem: compatibility and visible results vary by game and display.
  • Replacing the cable before checking settings: start with the supplied cable and troubleshoot the port, path and firmware.
  • Choosing by panel category alone: no TV or monitor type is universally best; model-level specifications determine compatibility.

Bottom-line buying rule

For PS5 gaming at 60 FPS, buy the screen that gives you 60 Hz at the resolution and size that fit your room. Choose 1440p when a desk setup and QHD detail make sense; choose 4K when the screen size, viewing distance and budget justify it. Add 120 Hz only for supported high-frame-rate games, and treat VRR and ALLM as compatibility-dependent extras. Before purchasing, identify the exact HDMI input, confirm its signal limits and plan to test the console directly with the supplied cable.
