How to Check Whether a PC Game Will Run Well on Your Computer

Check a PC game’s OS and hardware requirements against your actual system, then use comparable game benchmarks—not minimum specs alone—to estimate performance.

To find out whether a PC game will run well, compare its current system requirements with your PC’s exact hardware and operating system, then look for game-specific performance results from similar systems. A game’s minimum requirements are a compatibility baseline—not a promise of smooth frame rates or a particular graphics setting.

1. Check the exact game and its supported operating system

Start with the developer’s official system requirements or the game’s store page. Confirm the required operating-system version and architecture as well as hardware: a PC can have a fast processor and graphics card but still fail to meet the game’s platform requirements. Steam likewise recommends checking both OS compatibility and hardware requirements in its system requirements guidance.

Requirements can vary by game edition or change over time, so use the current listing for the version you plan to play.

2. Find your PC’s actual specifications

Use DxDiag on Windows

  1. Search Windows for dxdiag and open the DirectX Diagnostic Tool.
  2. Check the System tab for the processor, installed memory (RAM), and DirectX version.
  3. Open the Display tab to identify the graphics card and its driver details. If your PC has more than one display adapter, note each one.
  4. Select Save All Information if you want a report to refer to while comparing requirements.

EA’s DxDiag instructions explain that the report includes processor, memory, page-file, graphics-card, driver, limited error, and DirectX information. Steam also describes using the Display tab to find the graphics-card name and driver version and date in its hardware information guide.

  • Ready for Upgrades – Designed with tool-less access, easily swap out components, ensuring future-proof performance for years to come.

Check storage and laptop graphics too

Compare the game’s storage requirement with free space on the drive where you intend to install it; installed capacity and available space are not the same. On a laptop with integrated and discrete graphics, identify both adapters. If a game later performs unexpectedly, confirm it is using the intended GPU rather than assuming the more powerful one was selected.

3. Compare requirements component by component

Match exact model names wherever possible. “Intel,” “AMD,” or “NVIDIA” alone does not identify performance: processors and graphics cards from the same maker can differ substantially. Compare the operating system, CPU, GPU, RAM, required graphics features, and storage separately.

  • CPU: Compare the processor model with the listed requirement, not just its brand or advertised clock speed.
  • GPU: Match the graphics-card model and, when available, its video memory (VRAM). Check any required graphics API or feature support.
  • RAM: Compare installed system memory with the stated minimum and recommended values.
  • OS and architecture: Confirm the installed Windows version or other supported operating system meets the listing.
  • Storage: Make sure the installation drive has enough free space.

Do not treat the DirectX version shown in Windows as proof that a graphics card supports every feature a game needs. Steam’s hardware guide distinguishes the installed DirectX version from the graphics capabilities required by a game. The exact GPU model and its supported features matter.

4. Read minimum and recommended requirements correctly

Minimum requirements are a first filter for whether a game is expected to run on a baseline system. They do not specify a guaranteed frame rate, graphics preset, or consistent experience. Steam puts it plainly: “Simply meeting the system requirements does not mean you’ll have high FPS or strong in-game performance.” See its performance troubleshooting guidance.

Recommended requirements are useful context, but they still are not an individualized FPS guarantee. Requirements usually do not tell you exactly what frame rate a particular PC will achieve at your chosen resolution and settings. Treat them as a screening tool, then seek performance evidence that matches your intended use.

5. Estimate performance with comparable evidence

Prefer results from the same game

Look for tests of the same game on a CPU and GPU close to yours. A useful comparison also matches the game version or test scene, resolution, graphics preset, ray tracing, and upscaling settings. Check system RAM and GPU VRAM when those details are reported. Average FPS is helpful, but frame-time consistency or low-percentile results can reveal stutter that an average hides.

  • Turn on the Bright Lights: With the built-in RGB lighting, take your gaming experience to the next level by pressing the MSI LED button to cycle through lighting options. Customize lighting even further with MSI Center software.

An in-game benchmark, when available, can be especially relevant because it measures that game’s workload. Results still depend on the test scene and settings, so compare those details rather than relying on the headline number alone.

Use synthetic benchmarks as a secondary clue

A synthetic score can help compare systems, but it does not directly predict every game. The 3DMark Steam listing describes CPU and GPU tests in game-like scenes, comparisons with similar systems, and expected frame rates for a selection of games. Those results can provide context; they cannot guarantee how a specific game will run on your PC.

6. If you own the game, measure what is happening

Rather than guessing from a single low-FPS moment, watch performance while playing a representative scene. Steam’s in-game performance monitor can show frame rate and CPU, GPU, and memory information; its overlay performance monitor guide explains how to use those readings to investigate a likely CPU or GPU bottleneck.

When available, distinguish the game’s base frame rate from generated frames. Frame generation can raise the displayed FPS without changing the underlying rate at which the game renders its original frames.

7. Troubleshoot before considering an upgrade

Low performance does not automatically mean a component must be replaced. Use symptoms and observations to narrow down the cause:

  • Check the selected GPU: On a laptop with multiple adapters, verify that the game is using the intended graphics card.
  • Check the driver: Compare the installed graphics driver version with the graphics-card maker’s current driver information. Steam notes that outdated drivers can reduce FPS even when a GPU meets the stated requirements; see its software troubleshooting guide.
  • Compare FPS at different resolutions: If lowering resolution substantially improves performance, graphics workload may be a factor. If it barely changes, investigate other limits too. Steam’s hardware troubleshooting guidance discusses this comparison.
  • Look for memory pressure: If RAM is heavily used and the system is swapping data, performance may suffer. Check memory activity alongside the game rather than inferring a RAM problem from FPS alone.
  • Watch for heat-related slowdowns: Heat can reduce component clocks. Check for signs of thermal throttling if performance declines during a session; do not assume a cooling change will solve every case.

Consider an upgrade only after identifying a likely bottleneck and confirming that a replacement is compatible with the rest of your PC. A GPU, CPU, memory, storage, or cooling change addresses different problems; there is no universal upgrade for low FPS.
