Run Windows’ built-in dxdiag tool, note your PC’s operating system, processor, memory, graphics hardware and available storage, then compare each item with the official minimum requirements for the exact Rockstar game and PC edition. Meeting the minimum is a baseline, not a promise of a particular frame rate or smooth performance.
Check your PC’s specs with dxdiag
Rockstar Games Customer Support recommends the DirectX Diagnostic Tool for identifying computer hardware. You do not need a third-party app to collect the basic information needed for a first compatibility check. The steps below use Windows; Rockstar’s compatibility guidance was last updated April 28, 2024 (Rockstar’s PC compatibility instructions).

- Open the tool. Open Start, search for
dxdiag, and launch the DirectX Diagnostic Tool. Rockstar’s instructions describe opening Start > Run and enteringdxdiag. If Windows asks whether it should check for WHQL digital signatures, choose Yes. - Record your system details. On the System tab, note the Windows edition/version, processor name and memory. Compare the Windows version and CPU model with the requirements for the specific game, rather than relying on a general label such as “Windows 10” or “Core i5.”
- Record your graphics details. Select the Display tab and note the graphics-card name, manufacturer, chip type, approximate total memory and driver version/date. Those details help you match the listed graphics model and video-memory requirement.
- Check the sound tab if relevant. If the game lists a sound requirement, open Sound and record the device information. For the examples below, Rockstar specifies DirectX-compatible audio.
- Check storage separately. The System and Display tabs do not establish how much free disk space you have or whether a drive is an SSD or HDD. Check Windows’ storage settings or File Explorer for the drive where you plan to install the game, and compare capacity and drive type with Rockstar’s listing.
Integrated graphics can use shared system memory. The amount shown as total or available graphics memory is therefore not necessarily dedicated video memory on a graphics card. Do not treat shared memory as equivalent to a game’s stated dedicated VRAM requirement. If the graphics name or memory figure is unclear, record the exact values shown and compare them cautiously rather than assuming that a large shared-memory number satisfies a dedicated-memory figure.
It helps to write the information down before opening the requirements page: Windows version and build if shown, processor model, installed RAM, graphics model, graphics memory, and driver date. The System and Display tabs answer different questions, so keep system RAM separate from graphics memory when you make your notes. If your PC has more than one display adapter listed or you are unsure which device a game will use, do not guess that the larger-looking memory figure belongs to the relevant graphics hardware; compare the reported device names with the official list and treat uncertainty as unresolved.

Compare against the exact game and edition
Open Rockstar’s current PC system-requirements page for the title you want to play. Check the edition as well as the game name: Rockstar publishes different specifications for Grand Theft Auto V Enhanced and Grand Theft Auto V Legacy. Requirements can also change as downloadable content or programming changes are introduced, so an old list or a result for a different edition may not answer whether your copy is supported.
Work through every category in the official minimum list: operating system, CPU, RAM, graphics card, graphics memory, storage capacity and type, and sound hardware if specified. A PC that meets most lines but misses one does not meet every published minimum. The recommended tier is a separate, more demanding reference point; it should not be confused with the minimum threshold.
- Operating system: Match the listed Windows version and, where stated, 64-bit requirement or build.
- Processor: Compare the exact model family and model number. The presence of “i5,” “Ryzen,” or another familiar family name alone is not enough to establish a match.
- Memory: Compare system RAM with the stated amount. Do not confuse this with graphics memory.
- Graphics: Compare the GPU model and the stated VRAM, not just its manufacturer or a broad series name.
- Storage: Match both the required free capacity and the specified HDD, SSD or other drive-type wording.
- Sound: Check a listed DirectX-compatible audio requirement where applicable.
Rockstar’s lists name example configurations, not a universal ranking that lets you declare any unlisted CPU or GPU compatible by comparing one number. If your component is not listed, or the comparison is ambiguous, the published list does not establish support for that configuration. Rockstar cautions that some mobile chipsets, integrated graphics and AGP graphics cards may be incompatible, and that unlisted specifications may not be supported.
Recommended Free Tools
A practical way to read the list is to treat each row as its own check, not as a score. First verify that the game page is for the right release. Then compare your PC to the minimum column for every stated item. Only after that, look at recommended specifications to understand the more demanding reference tier. Rockstar’s lists do not provide a formula for balancing one stronger component against another weaker one, so a higher RAM amount does not cancel a GPU shortfall, and a GPU that appears newer does not settle an uncertain CPU or operating-system comparison.
Example: Grand Theft Auto V Enhanced versus Legacy
Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto V PC system requirements page was last updated December 10, 2025. The table separates the Enhanced and Legacy PC editions because their published requirements differ. Storage figures and drive types are included as Rockstar states them; do not assume that meeting one edition’s list establishes compatibility with the other.
| Requirement | GTA V Enhanced minimum | GTA V Enhanced recommended | GTA V Legacy minimum | GTA V Legacy recommended |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 build 1909 or above | Windows 11 | Windows 10 64-bit | Windows 10 64-bit |
| Processor | Intel Core i7-4770 or AMD FX-9590 | Intel Core i5-9600K or AMD Ryzen 5 3600 | Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 or AMD Phenom 9850 Quad-Core | Intel Core i5 3470 or AMD X8 FX-8350 |
| Memory | 8GB RAM | 16GB dual-channel RAM | 4GB RAM | 8GB RAM |
| Graphics | NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1630 (4GB VRAM) or AMD Radeon RX 6400 (4GB VRAM) | NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 (8GB VRAM) or AMD Radeon RX 6600 XT (8GB VRAM) | NVIDIA 9800 GT (1GB) or AMD HD 4870 (1GB) | NVIDIA GTX 660 (2GB) or AMD HD7870 (2GB) |
| Storage | 105GB SSD | 105GB DirectStorage-compatible drive | 125GB HDD | 125GB HDD |
| Sound | DirectX 10 compatible audio | Not stated in Rockstar’s listed recommended specifications | DirectX 10 compatible audio | Not stated in Rockstar’s listed recommended specifications |
Use the column for the edition you intend to install. For example, the Enhanced minimum calls for an SSD, while the Legacy minimum specifies an HDD; substituting the Legacy storage line when checking Enhanced would produce the wrong comparison. Likewise, the Windows and graphics requirements are not interchangeable between the two editions.

The table also shows why a familiar game title is not enough to identify the relevant baseline. Enhanced and Legacy differ in their listed minimum RAM, named graphics cards, storage capacity and storage type, as well as some operating-system wording. For Enhanced, the recommended tier raises memory from 8GB to 16GB dual-channel and names newer graphics examples than its minimum. Those comparisons describe Rockstar’s published tiers; they do not establish a specific performance result for every PC that falls between them.
Example: Red Dead Redemption 2 and Red Dead Redemption
Red Dead Redemption 2 and Red Dead Redemption are separate PC releases with separate requirements pages. Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption 2 PC system requirements page was last updated April 30, 2024; the separate Red Dead Redemption PC system requirements page was last updated October 16, 2024. Do not use one game’s CPU, GPU or storage line to judge the other.
| Requirement | Red Dead Redemption 2 minimum | Red Dead Redemption 2 recommended |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 64-bit | Windows 10 64-bit |
| Processor | Intel Core i5-2500K or AMD FX-6300 | Intel Core i7-4770K or AMD Ryzen 5 1500X |
| Memory | 8GB | 12GB |
| Graphics | NVIDIA GeForce GTX 770 2GB or AMD Radeon R9 280 3GB | NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB or AMD Radeon RX 480 4GB |
| Storage | 150GB | 150GB |
| Sound | DirectX-compatible sound | DirectX-compatible sound |
Rockstar lists these specifications for Red Dead Redemption PC (the separate game page last updated October 16, 2024):
| Requirement | Red Dead Redemption minimum | Red Dead Redemption recommended |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 64-bit | Windows 10 64-bit |
| Processor | Intel Core i5-4670 or AMD FX-9590 | Intel Core i5-8500 or AMD Ryzen 5 3500X |
| Memory | 8GB | 8GB |
| Graphics | NVIDIA GTX 960 or AMD R7 360 | NVIDIA RTX 2070 or AMD RX 5700 XT |
| Storage | 12GB HDD | 12GB SSD |
The Red Dead Redemption PC list does not state a graphics-memory figure or sound requirement in the specifications summarized above. That is different from an explicit requirement of zero memory or no sound support: it means the listed page does not provide that comparison value. Consult the live official page when checking, particularly if you need a detail not shown in the table.
The examples also illustrate how specifications can differ even within one franchise. Red Dead Redemption 2 lists 150GB of storage at both minimum and recommended tiers, while Red Dead Redemption lists 12GB and distinguishes HDD at minimum from SSD at recommended. Do not transfer a requirement just because the titles share a series name. Match the game’s own official page, including the exact drive wording and each named graphics configuration.
Check the launcher and online requirements separately
A Rockstar Games Launcher that installs successfully does not prove that a particular game will run. Rockstar’s launcher requirements page, last updated May 1, 2024, lists Windows 10 64-bit, an Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 or AMD Phenom 9850, 2GB memory, a DX11-supported card and 1GB of launcher space. Rockstar also says supported games need additional installation space and may have additional requirements (Rockstar Games Launcher system requirements).

After checking the game’s hardware list, review its official page for Rockstar account, activation and internet requirements. The game requirements pages describe account and internet needs for activation, online play and periodic entitlement verification. Those are separate questions from whether the PC’s CPU, RAM and graphics meet the hardware minimums. A launcher baseline is not a substitute for the game’s own specifications.
Think of the launcher and game as two separate gates. The launcher page tells you about the software used to access supported games; the selected game page adds the installation space and hardware requirements for that release. Passing one gate does not automatically pass the other. Likewise, checking hardware does not answer whether you have the account access or internet connection needed for activation, online play or periodic entitlement verification.
What a match does—and does not—tell you
Meeting every minimum
If your operating system and listed components match or exceed every published minimum, your PC meets Rockstar’s stated baseline on those listed dimensions. That is a useful compatibility screen, but it does not guarantee a particular frame rate, graphics preset or smooth experience across every configuration. Rockstar’s cited requirements pages do not promise performance for each possible combination of hardware and software.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Meeting recommended specifications
The recommended tier is a more demanding reference than the minimum, not a requirement you must satisfy just to attempt installation. If your PC falls between the two tiers, the comparison tells you that it is above at least some minimum values but below Rockstar’s recommended examples; it does not establish a specific frame rate or settings outcome.
One stronger-looking part is not enough
Do not declare a system compatible solely because one CPU or GPU looks numerically stronger than a listed model. The official list also includes other hardware and software conditions, and Rockstar warns that some chipsets and graphics configurations may be incompatible. Compare the complete list and treat an unlisted component as uncertain rather than turning a partial comparison into a guarantee.
In particular, avoid converting a requirements list into an informal benchmark ranking. Rockstar provides named minimum and recommended examples, not test results for every unlisted model. When your processor or graphics chip is not named, the safest conclusion is that the list does not confirm support for that specific part. The same caution applies if your PC uses mobile graphics or integrated hardware, since Rockstar specifically warns that some such configurations may be incompatible.

Fix common comparison mistakes
- You are looking at the wrong edition. Confirm the game name and edition in the official requirements page. This matters especially for GTA V Enhanced versus Legacy, whose OS, graphics and storage lines differ.
- You have confused system RAM with VRAM. Read memory and graphics memory from their respective categories. Integrated graphics may borrow shared system memory; that does not automatically satisfy a dedicated VRAM figure.
- You cannot identify your graphics hardware. Reopen
dxdiagand inspect Display for the reported card or chip name and driver date. If the device is integrated or a mobile chipset, account for Rockstar’s compatibility caution instead of assuming it is supported. - You have enough total disk capacity but not the required drive type. Check the target installation drive itself. Compare the stated capacity and type—for example, SSD versus HDD—rather than checking only the size of another drive in the computer.
- The launcher works but the game does not meet its listed minimum. Compare the game’s own requirements; Rockstar says games need additional installation space and can have additional requirements beyond the launcher baseline.
- Your specs do not match a listed model exactly. The pages do not establish support for every unlisted specification. Avoid inferring guaranteed compatibility from a model-family name or one apparent performance number.
Another easy mistake is comparing against a remembered or search-result snippet instead of the current page for the precise release. Rockstar’s GTA V requirements page was updated December 10, 2025, while the cited Red Dead Redemption 2, Red Dead Redemption and Launcher pages have their own update dates. Checking the date and edition helps prevent a stale or mismatched list from driving a hardware decision.

Decide what to do before changing hardware
Use the comparison to identify the specific unmet line before considering an upgrade. If the graphics card is below the chosen game’s published minimum, a graphics upgrade may be relevant; if the problem is insufficient capacity or a required drive type, storage may be the issue. Those are conditional decisions, not recommendations to buy parts before checking the exact game and edition. If an unlisted component or compatibility warning is the uncertainty, a purchase based only on a numerical comparison may not resolve it.
The diagnostic step itself is free and built into Windows, so a third-party optimizer is not needed to identify the basics. Start with the values already available through dxdiag and Windows storage information. An upgrade only becomes a relevant next step after the comparison identifies a specific shortfall. For example, the fact that one GTA V edition lists an SSD does not mean every Rockstar title in this article needs the same drive type; check the selected game and edition before buying storage.
Keep a short record of the values you checked—Windows version, processor, RAM, graphics model and memory, driver date, free storage and drive type—alongside the URL and last-updated date of the game’s official requirements page. This makes it easier to revisit the same comparison if Rockstar updates the list or if you are checking a different edition.
Frequently Asked Questions
How can I check whether my PC is compatible with a Rockstar game?
Run Windows’ DirectX Diagnostic Tool by searching Start for dxdiag. Record the operating system, processor and RAM on System, and the graphics model, memory and driver details on Display. Then compare every item with the official minimum requirements for the exact game and PC edition, and check storage and account or internet needs separately.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWill GTA V run on my PC if I meet the minimum requirements?
Meeting every published minimum means your PC matches Rockstar’s listed baseline on those dimensions. It does not guarantee a particular frame rate, graphics preset or smooth performance. Also make sure you are checking the correct edition: GTA V Enhanced and GTA V Legacy have different requirements.

Does shared graphics memory count as VRAM?
Not necessarily. Integrated graphics can use shared system memory, so a total or available memory figure in dxdiag should not automatically be treated as dedicated VRAM. Compare the graphics device and memory cautiously with the wording in the game’s requirements.
Is the Rockstar Games Launcher requirement enough to tell if a game will run?
No. Rockstar’s Launcher requirements are separate from the requirements of each supported game. A game may need more installation space or have higher CPU, memory, graphics and other requirements. Check both the launcher page and the selected game’s page.
What if my processor or graphics card is not listed by Rockstar?
The published list does not establish support for every unlisted component, and a model-family name or one apparently stronger number is not proof of compatibility. Rockstar also cautions that some mobile chipsets, integrated graphics and AGP cards may be incompatible. Treat an unclear match as uncertain rather than a guarantee.
Do Rockstar PC requirements include storage type as well as capacity?
Some do. For example, GTA V Enhanced minimum lists a 105GB SSD, while Legacy minimum lists a 125GB HDD. Red Dead Redemption PC lists 12GB HDD at minimum and 12GB SSD at recommended. Check the target installation drive for both free space and the specified type.
The Bottom Line
Use dxdiag to identify your PC’s hardware, then compare every listed minimum with the official requirements for the exact Rockstar game and edition. Check drive capacity and type, and review launcher, account and internet needs separately. A match is a baseline—not a performance guarantee.
