Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTo check for an age restriction, sign in to YouTube with an account that is over 18, open the video’s watch page, and look below its description. To check whether a video was removed, a creator should open YouTube Studio and inspect the video’s Restrictions column and Notices. A viewer-facing “video unavailable” message by itself does not establish that YouTube removed the video.
The key is to distinguish an audience limit from a takedown or a change in visibility. A video with an age restriction remains on YouTube but is not available to everyone. A removed video has been taken down, while a video locked as private is no longer public. Viewers may see a similar playback failure in all three cases, so creators have the clearest status information in Studio.

Check for an age restriction as a viewer
YouTube’s viewer-side check is intended for someone signed in with an account that is over 18. YouTube Help says that viewers who are over 18 and signed in can tell whether a video is age-restricted by looking below its description. This check can help identify an age gate, but it does not give a public viewer a complete explanation of every reason a video may not play.
- Sign in to YouTube with an account that is over 18. The official check is not described as a check for signed-out viewers or viewers under 18.
- Open the video on its YouTube watch page. If you started playback on another site, go to YouTube itself. Age-restricted videos cannot be watched on most third-party websites and may redirect there.
- Look below the description for an age-restriction indication. YouTube’s guidance says signed-in viewers over 18 can tell whether a video is age-restricted there.
- Interpret what you see narrowly. An age-restriction indication points to an audience limit; it is not a removal notice. If there is no indication, that alone does not prove the video was removed or establish that it is available to every viewer.
If you do not see an indication, that does not prove the video was removed—or that it is available to everyone. The creator-facing status in Studio can provide more detail than a viewer can see. YouTube’s viewer-side guidance identifies where an over-18, signed-in viewer can look; it does not establish that a viewer can diagnose every unavailable-video case from the page or URL alone.

If the video is playing in an embedded player
First open the video on YouTube rather than treating the embedded player’s failure as proof of removal. Age-restricted videos cannot be watched on most third-party sites and may send viewers to YouTube. A playback failure on another website therefore does not tell you whether a video is gone, private, or restricted; it may simply be a limitation of playback outside YouTube.
Once you are on the YouTube watch page, sign in with an account over 18 and check below the description. If the page still says unavailable, note that the viewer-facing message may not identify the cause. The creator’s Studio notice is the better place to distinguish an age restriction from a takedown or private status.
Check the video in YouTube Studio as its creator
If you own or manage the video, YouTube Studio is the most useful place to confirm its status. Unlike a viewer’s generic playback message, the video’s Restrictions entry and Notices can include a creator-facing label or explanation. Use the current notice attached to that video rather than inferring the reason from what another person sees.
- Sign in to YouTube Studio and open Content.
- Find the video and check its Restrictions column. YouTube documents an Age-Restriction filter that can narrow the content list when you are checking for age restrictions.
- Open or inspect the restriction or notice associated with the video. An age-restricted video may show Viewable by 18+ under Notices. For other enforcement or visibility states, look for labels such as Removed, Locked as private, or Terms and policies.
- Read the notice for the specific reason and any available review option. A Terms and policies label is used for content YouTube takes down, limits, or makes private for policy or terms reasons; the notice gives the more specific explanation.
- If you believe an age restriction is mistaken, use the appeal route available through Studio. For a removal, follow the steps associated with the reason in the notice; removal appeal steps depend on why the content was removed.
Do not treat the presence of a word such as “restriction” as a complete explanation. Check which status the notice actually identifies and whether it is about age, policy, or visibility. The same video list is where a creator can review the status, but the next action depends on the specific notice. The guidance does not establish one universal appeal process for every kind of removal.
Studio’s exact labels and interface can change. Use the current notice shown on the video rather than relying on an old screenshot or a cached status. If you are comparing what a viewer sees with what Studio shows, make sure you are checking the same video and the current status: an old image or a generic unavailable page may not reflect the present notice.

How age restriction, removal, and private status differ
| Status | What it means | What you may see | Creator action |
|---|---|---|---|
| Age-restricted | The video remains on YouTube, but YouTube considers it unsuitable for viewers under 18. It is unavailable to signed-out viewers and viewers under 18; most third-party embedded playback is unavailable or redirects to YouTube. | A signed-in viewer over 18 can look below the description. Studio may show “Viewable by 18+” under Notices. | Review the notice and use Studio’s appeal route if you believe the restriction is mistaken. |
| Removed | YouTube has taken the content down. This is different from an age gate: the issue is that YouTube has taken the video down, not merely limited access to an age-eligible audience. | A creator may see “Removed” or a “Terms and policies” notice in Studio. A viewer may only see that the video is unavailable. | Review the enforcement information and follow the removal-specific appeal steps, if available. |
| Locked as private | The video is no longer public. Someone with the link may see it as unavailable. That does not mean the video was removed. | Studio may show “Locked as private.” The viewer-facing result can look like other unavailable-video cases. | Check the Studio notice to understand the video’s visibility status. |
| Terms and policies | A label in Studio for content YouTube takes down, limits, or makes private for policy or terms reasons. It is a category of notice, not by itself a full explanation of the specific action. | The creator sees the label in Restrictions and should open the associated notice for details. | Read the specific notice and follow the review or appeal option it provides. |
These distinctions answer four practical questions: who can watch, whether the video remains hosted, what indication appears, and what the creator can do. With an age restriction, the video remains on YouTube but access is limited by age and sign-in context. With removal, YouTube has taken the content down. With a locked-as-private status, the video is no longer public; someone who has its link may still be unable to watch it.
An age gate is an access limit, not the same thing as a takedown. A private video also differs from a removal: the fact that a link no longer plays publicly does not, on its own, tell you which status applies. For viewers, the distinction may not be obvious from the playback screen. For the creator, Studio’s label and notice are the useful evidence.

Why “This video is unavailable” does not prove removal
YouTube’s viewer-facing message may not explain why playback failed. A video can be unavailable to a particular viewer because of an age restriction, or because its visibility changed—for example, if it was locked as private. Removal is another possibility, but the URL or a generic unavailable message does not reliably distinguish these causes.
This is why an unavailable message should be treated as a description of the viewing result, not a diagnosis. It can tell you that playback is not working for you in that context. It does not necessarily say whether YouTube removed the content, whether the video is private, or whether an age or sign-in limit applies. The available viewer-side information is not guaranteed to expose all causes.
If you are a viewer, try the YouTube watch page and check below the description while signed in to an over-18 account. If it remains unavailable and no age notice clarifies the status, the creator is the person best placed to check Studio’s notice. A creator should inspect the video’s Restrictions column and Notices rather than infer a removal from a viewer’s playback error.

If you are trying to help someone else troubleshoot, avoid telling them that a video has definitely been removed based only on a screenshot or a failed link. A screenshot can omit the page context, and cached information may not match the current status. The more reliable next step is to ask the owner to check the current Studio entry. A public viewer may not be able to distinguish every cause from the URL alone.

“Made for kids,” copyright claims, ad suitability, and Restricted Mode are separate settings or restriction types. They can affect features, audience access, or monetization differently, but none of those labels is interchangeable with an age restriction or a removal notice. For a specific video, use the status shown in Studio and read its associated notice.
In particular, a label that changes how a video is treated does not automatically mean the content is age-restricted or removed. A copyright claim, an ad-suitability status, or a setting for content made for kids is not the same status as Viewable by 18+, Removed, or Locked as private. Restricted Mode is also distinct. If you see one of these other terms, check its own context rather than using it as a shortcut to conclude what happened to the video’s availability.
The practical rule is to match the label to the question: are you checking who can watch, whether the video remains public, or whether YouTube took it down? The answer should come from the current notice or status for the video, not from a different setting that happens to affect features or audience access.
Quick troubleshooting checklist
- Playback fails on an embedded player: Open the video on YouTube; age-restricted videos are not playable on most third-party sites.
- You are signed out or under 18: You cannot use the viewer-side check described above to confirm age-restricted status; YouTube’s stated check is for signed-in viewers over 18.
- The YouTube watch page says unavailable: Do not treat that message alone as proof of removal. A private status or an age/access limitation may also explain the result.
- You own the video: Check Studio’s Content list, Restrictions column, Age-Restriction filter, and Notices. Use the exact notice—not a screenshot or cached view—to identify what happened.
- You see “Viewable by 18+”: Treat it as an age-restriction indication, not as evidence that the video was removed.
- You see “Locked as private”: The video is no longer public. Do not describe that label as a removal without a separate removal notice.
- You see “Terms and policies”: Open the notice to learn whether the content was taken down, limited, or made private and what reason or review option is shown.
- You think the age restriction is wrong: Review the notice and use the appeal option available through Studio.
- You see a removal notice: Follow the appeal process associated with its stated reason; the process depends on why the content was removed.
Which check should you use?
Use the viewer-side check when you are simply trying to find out whether a video has an age gate: sign in with an over-18 account, open the YouTube watch page, and look below the description. This is the quick check YouTube describes for viewers. It can identify an age restriction when the indication is present, but it is not a complete diagnostic tool for all unavailable videos.

Use YouTube Studio when you own or manage the video, or when a viewer-side check leaves the reason unclear. Studio provides the video’s Restrictions column and Notices, including labels that can distinguish an age restriction from removal or locked-private status. If your goal is to challenge a decision, the notice matters because it identifies the status and the applicable review route. An age-restriction appeal is handled through Studio; removal steps depend on the stated reason.
There is no need to use a third-party service, buy a tool, or look for a workaround to determine a current status. The relevant checks are in YouTube’s own interface, and an external service should not be presented as a way around an age gate or a removal. If the information available to a viewer is inconclusive, the creator-facing notice is the appropriate next check.

How can I tell if a YouTube video is age-restricted?
Sign in to YouTube with an account that is over 18, open the video’s watch page, and look below the description for the age-restriction indication. YouTube identifies this as the viewer-side check for signed-in viewers over 18.
Does “Viewable by 18+” mean a video was removed?
No. “Viewable by 18+” is an age-restriction notice. The video remains on YouTube but has age and access limits; it is not the same as a removal notice.
Why does YouTube say this video is unavailable?
An unavailable message alone does not establish the reason. The video may be age-restricted for your viewing context, locked as private, or removed. A creator should check the current video notice in YouTube Studio to identify its status.

Can I check an age restriction from an embedded video player?
Age-restricted videos cannot be watched on most third-party sites and may redirect viewers to YouTube. Open the YouTube watch page, sign in with an over-18 account, and look below the description.
Where does a creator check whether a video was removed?
In YouTube Studio, open Content and inspect the video’s Restrictions column and Notices. Look for labels such as “Removed,” “Locked as private,” or “Terms and policies,” and open the notice for its specific explanation.
Is a video locked as private the same as a removed video?
No. “Locked as private” means the video is no longer public, and someone with the link may see it as unavailable. “Removed” means YouTube has taken the content down.

What should I do if I think an age restriction is mistaken?
Review the video’s notice in YouTube Studio and use the appeal route available there. For a removal, follow the process associated with the reason shown in the notice; removal appeal steps depend on that reason.
Do Made for kids, copyright, or Restricted Mode labels mean a video is age-restricted?
Not by themselves. Made for kids, copyright claims, ad suitability, and Restricted Mode are separate settings or restriction types. Check the video’s specific status and notice in Studio.
The Bottom Line
For an age restriction, check below the video description while signed in to YouTube with an over-18 account. For a suspected removal or private status, the creator should check the video’s Restrictions column and Notices in YouTube Studio. A generic “video unavailable” message is not enough to tell which status applies.
