That is the on-console check Xbox describes for claiming a digital license, if the disc qualifies. Eligibility depends on the title: Xbox says most Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games support the feature, but not every game does, and Microsoft says eligibility can change.
The Xbox Series S cannot check a physical disc because it has no disc drive. As of October 13, 2026, Xbox has announced the feature and Windows Central reported its general rollout began September 29, 2026; the official materials reviewed do not establish whether availability differs by region or account.

How to check a disc
The most direct way to check an individual disc is to use the Xbox console that can read it. Xbox describes inserting the disc and launching the game as the process for claiming a digital entitlement when the disc is supported. The feature is title-specific, so the fact that one disc works does not establish that another disc, even from the same series or publisher, will qualify.
- Use a disc-reading console. The feature is described for Xbox One and Xbox Series X game discs. You need access to an Xbox One or Xbox Series X console with an optical drive; a Series S cannot read the disc. See Xbox’s console and disc information.
- Insert the game disc and launch the game. Xbox describes this as the way to claim the digital entitlement for a supported disc. There is no complete public title-by-title checker in the official materials cited here, so the console’s response is the practical way to check an individual disc.
- Pay attention to whether the console offers or grants the digital license. Do not infer eligibility just from the game appearing in a store, working as a disc game, or being playable through backward compatibility. Those are different situations from claiming this feature’s limited-access license.
- Read the result as applying to that disc and title. If the console offers or grants the digital license, Microsoft’s terms still condition access on continued possession of the qualifying disc. The license may need revalidation, and Microsoft may suspend or revoke access if you no longer possess the disc.
- Keep the disc. Xbox says the disc continues to work as it always has. The digital license adds digital access for supported features; it does not make the physical disc unnecessary to own.
Xbox’s August 26, 2026 announcement says, “Most XBOX One and XBOX Series X disc-based games support this new feature.” That describes overall support, not a guarantee for a particular game. Xbox also said it was starting with “thousands of titles” and adding more over time; that is a launch-scale description, not an exact count or a published eligibility list. What the check can—and cannot—tell you
A successful offer or claim is the best practical indication that the particular disc is supported for this feature at that time. It does not turn the disc into an unrestricted digital purchase or remove the conditions attached to the license. Microsoft’s usage rules describe a limited-access license and reserve the ability to require revalidation. They also say access may be suspended or revoked if the qualifying disc is no longer possessed.
A console that does not offer the license has not confirmed eligibility through the feature. It is not safe to treat that result as proof that the game will never qualify. Xbox and Microsoft say eligibility can change, and Xbox said more titles would be added over time. The public materials do not identify every possible reason for a missing offer, or explain whether a particular unsuccessful attempt reflects a title exclusion, changing availability, account or regional rollout, or another issue.
For the same reason, a static list from another site should not be treated as definitive. The official materials do not supply a complete title-by-title eligibility checker or list, and Microsoft says titles may be added or removed for technical, licensing, publishing, or other factors. If you need to know about your own copy, use the disc with the console rather than relying on a list that may not reflect the current status.
What does and does not qualify
The stated scope is Xbox One and Xbox Series X game discs. Microsoft does not say that every disc from those generations qualifies. It lists technical, licensing, publishing, and other factors as possible reasons for exclusions, and says eligibility may change as titles are added or removed. A list found elsewhere can therefore become outdated and should not be treated as definitive.
The Xbox Series S is not an alternative for checking a physical copy: it has no disc drive and cannot play physical discs. A disc-reading Xbox One or Xbox Series X is needed for the described check. The distinction is about hardware access to the disc, not a claim that buying a particular console makes a title eligible. A console with a drive lets you try the check; it cannot guarantee that a specific disc will be accepted.
The feature should not be confused with ordinary backward compatibility. The backward-compatible disc route lets a compatible game download to the console, but the disc must remain in the drive to play. Disc-to-digital is a separate, limited-access digital license for a supported disc: it changes how supported digital features can be accessed, while continued possession of the qualifying disc remains a condition. The current disc-to-digital rules describe Xbox One and Xbox Series X discs, not the older Xbox 360 or original Xbox compatibility library. Microsoft’s usage rules for digital goods and Xbox’s backward-compatibility information explain the distinction.

| Route | Disc role | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Disc-to-digital license | Use a qualifying Xbox One or Xbox Series X disc to claim the limited-access digital license; continued possession is required. | Eligibility is title-specific and can change. Supported digital benefits may include Play Anywhere or Cloud Gaming, where available for that game. |
| Ordinary backward-compatible disc play | The compatible game downloads, and the disc must remain in the drive to play. | This is a separate compatibility route, not a disc-to-digital license. |
What to do if the console does not offer the license
A missing offer or license means the console has not confirmed eligibility for that disc through the feature. It does not, by itself, prove that the title is permanently ineligible: Microsoft says availability can change, and the announcement does not document every reason an attempt might fail. It also does not provide a specific error-code guide, menu path, or troubleshooting sequence for an unsuccessful check.

The stated scope is Xbox One and Xbox Series X game discs. The feature’s cited rules do not extend this disc-to-digital claim process to Xbox 360 or original Xbox discs simply because some older titles can be played through backward compatibility.
- Confirm that the hardware can read the disc. Use a disc-reading Xbox One or Xbox Series X. The Series S is digital-only and cannot perform a physical-disc check.
- Use the disc and launch the game. This is the method Xbox describes. A third-party list, store listing, or ordinary backward-compatible disc launch does not substitute for the feature’s on-console check.
- Check Microsoft’s current usage rules. They explain the license conditions, including the possibility of revalidation and changing eligibility. They do not provide a public all-games lookup or a universal fix for an unsuccessful attempt.
- Avoid assuming that a different console will solve the issue. The materials do not identify one universal cause for a missing offer. Another compatible console provides another opportunity to try the check, but it does not guarantee title eligibility or access for an account.
Do not follow a supposed button-by-button fix unless it comes from current Xbox guidance for the exact issue you are seeing. The cited Xbox announcement does not name exact menu labels or specify a troubleshooting sequence. Likewise, do not assume that a failed prompt means a permanent exclusion; eligibility and availability can change, and the public terms do not explain every failure case.
Availability, supported benefits, and limits
Xbox announced Insider testing beginning the week of August 31, 2026. Windows Central reported that general availability began September 29, 2026. Microsoft’s usage rules confirm the limited-access license terms, but the official text reviewed does not settle whether rollout varies by region or account. For an individual check, use the current on-console experience rather than relying on the announcement date alone. Windows Central’s September 30, 2026 rollout report.
Xbox described Play Anywhere and Cloud Gaming as benefits where supported. That qualification matters: neither feature is promised for every game that can claim a disc-to-digital license. Check the game’s current support details if one of those particular benefits is important to you; the existence of a disc-to-digital license alone is not a guarantee that every digital feature is available for that title.
The license is not an unrestricted replacement for owning a digital copy. It is tied to the qualifying disc and subject to Microsoft’s usage rules, including possible revalidation and suspension or revocation if you no longer possess that disc. Keep the physical copy even if you intend to use the supported digital access. Xbox says the disc continues to work as it always has, so this feature adds an option rather than making your existing disc obsolete.

No, not if you already have access to a disc-reading Xbox One or Xbox Series X. The on-console check requires compatible disc-reading hardware, but the feature does not require every owner to buy a new console. If your only console is a Series S, it cannot read the disc; you would need access to a disc-reading Xbox One or Series X to try the described process.

Buying a disc-drive Xbox Series X may be relevant for someone who lacks any compatible optical-drive console and wants to run the check, but it is not a purchase requirement for someone who already has suitable hardware. Nor does buying the console make an unsupported title eligible. The Xbox announcement and Microsoft rules do not establish a special console price, a retailer offer, or a guarantee based on the hardware model beyond the need for a drive that can read the disc.
How to think about the result over time
Check close to when you plan to use the feature. Xbox said it was beginning with thousands of titles and adding more, while Microsoft’s terms allow eligibility to change, including removal. A result from a past attempt, or an old list someone published, may not describe the current status of a title. Repeating the on-console check later is a reasonable way to see whether the current experience has changed, but Microsoft does not promise that a previously unavailable disc will eventually qualify.
Also separate three questions that can be easy to conflate: whether the console can read the disc, whether the title is eligible for this particular license, and which digital features the game supports. A disc-reading console addresses only the first question. The console’s response during the described process is the practical way to check the second. Game-specific support determines the third, including whether Play Anywhere or Cloud Gaming applies. Keeping those questions separate avoids treating compatibility or a digital feature listing as proof of disc-to-digital eligibility.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I check whether my Xbox disc is eligible for disc-to-digital?
On a disc-reading Xbox One or Xbox Series X, insert the Xbox One or Xbox Series X game disc and launch the game. Xbox describes this as the way to claim the limited-access digital license for a supported disc. There is no complete public title-by-title checker in the cited official materials, so the console’s response is the practical check for an individual copy.
Can I check a physical Xbox disc on Xbox Series S?
No. Xbox Series S is digital-only and has no disc drive, so it cannot read the disc or perform this physical-disc check. Use a disc-reading Xbox One or Xbox Series X.
Does every Xbox One or Xbox Series X disc qualify?
No. Xbox says most Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games support the feature, but not every title does. Microsoft says technical, licensing, publishing, or other factors can affect eligibility, which may change over time.

Does an eligible disc become unnecessary after I claim the license?
No. Microsoft’s terms condition the limited-access license on continued possession of the qualifying disc. Microsoft may require revalidation and may suspend or revoke access if you no longer possess it. Xbox also says the disc continues to work as it always has.
Is disc-to-digital the same as backward compatibility?
No. For ordinary backward-compatible disc play, the game downloads to the console but the disc must remain in the drive to play. Disc-to-digital is a separate limited-access license for a supported Xbox One or Xbox Series X disc. The cited disc-to-digital rules do not extend the feature to Xbox 360 or original Xbox discs.
If the console does not offer a license, is the game permanently ineligible?
Not necessarily. A missing offer means the console has not confirmed eligibility in that attempt. Microsoft says eligibility can change, but the official materials do not describe every failure cause or provide a universal troubleshooting sequence. Check current Xbox and Microsoft guidance rather than assuming the title is permanently excluded.
Does an eligible game automatically include Play Anywhere or Cloud Gaming?
No. Xbox describes those as benefits only where supported. Their availability is game-specific and is not guaranteed for every disc that can claim the digital license.
When did the feature become generally available?
Xbox announced Insider testing beginning the week of August 31, 2026. Windows Central reported general availability beginning September 29, 2026. The reviewed official text does not establish whether account or regional rollout differences remain.
The Bottom Line
To check an individual disc, insert and launch it on a disc-reading Xbox One or Xbox Series X. The title must be supported, and a successful license does not eliminate the requirement to keep possessing the qualifying disc. A Series S cannot read discs; eligibility and supported digital benefits can vary and change.
