Do not rely on the FFmpeg process alone. To tell whether an always-on YouTube stream is actually working, check the local process and logs, confirm the input is readable with ffprobe, then check YouTube’s receiving status, stream health, and broadcast lifecycle. Each answers a different question; repeat the checks to catch interruptions rather than treating one successful observation as proof of continuous streaming.
What “still broadcasting” can mean
There are several separate states between a running FFmpeg process and a viewer watching a live YouTube event. Check the signal that matches the question you need answered:
| Signal | What it supports | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg process exists | The local process has not exited. | That it has usable input or is successfully sending output to YouTube. |
ffprobe opens the input and lists streams |
The input URL was readable and recognized as media during that probe. | Continued availability, YouTube ingestion, or viewer playback. |
YouTube streamStatus=active |
YouTube is receiving encoder data. | That stream quality has no issues or that the broadcast lifecycle is live. |
YouTube health status is good or ok |
No issues meet the corresponding warning or error threshold described by the API. | Guaranteed playback for every viewer or future health. |
Broadcast lifecycle is live |
The YouTube broadcast is active. | That the local encoder will remain healthy indefinitely. |
| Watch-page playback works | A viewer can observe playback at that moment. | Owner-only ingestion diagnostics or that playback will continue uninterrupted. |
In short, an encoder can be running while YouTube is not receiving data; YouTube can receive data while the broadcast is still starting; and an active broadcast can still have quality warnings.
Check the FFmpeg process and recent logs
- On the machine running FFmpeg, use its process manager or operating-system process list to confirm the FFmpeg process still exists.
- Inspect the most recent FFmpeg log output. Look for input-open or read errors, disconnects, output errors, and repeated retry messages.
- Keep this result in context: a process that has not exited is only a local signal. It does not prove that the input is readable or that YouTube accepted the outgoing feed.
If FFmpeg has exited, the broadcast cannot continue receiving new output from that process. If it is still running but logs show errors or repeated retries, proceed to the input and YouTube checks instead of treating the process state as success.

Probe the media input with ffprobe
ffprobe accepts an input URL and can report the media streams and format it recognizes. Run this on an input URL you are authorized to access:
ffprobe -v error -show_streams -show_format -of json "INPUT_URL"
Replace INPUT_URL with the actual source URL; it is a placeholder, not a literal URL to run. JSON output is useful when a script needs to inspect the result. The FFmpeg Project documents the command and output options in its ffprobe documentation.
- If the command opens the input and lists streams, that input was readable and recognized as media at that time.
- If the input cannot be opened or recognized as media,
ffprobereturns a positive exit code, according to the documentation. - A successful probe is a point-in-time observation. It does not prove the source will remain available, that FFmpeg is sending successfully, or that YouTube is receiving or showing the broadcast.
Probe behavior depends on the URL and protocol. A private YouTube ingest endpoint is not automatically a publicly probeable viewer URL; use an authorized input appropriate to the check.

Verify that YouTube is receiving encoder data
If you control the channel and have authorization to access its YouTube Live Streaming API resources, inspect the bound liveStream resource’s status.streamStatus. Google defines active as the state in which the user is receiving data via the stream, and inactive as the state in which the user is not receiving data via the stream. See the YouTube LiveStreams API resource.
Recommended Free Tools
This is the most direct API signal for whether YouTube is receiving encoder data. It still does not say whether the associated broadcast has reached its live state or whether the incoming video is free of quality problems. Check those separately.
Inspect YouTube stream health and configuration issues
On the same stream resource, read status.healthStatus.status and any entries in configurationIssues[]. The health status and issue details can flag problems involving bitrate, codec, frame rate, keyframes, or ingestion. Google’s reference describes the available LiveStream configuration issues.

videoIngestionStarvedmeans YouTube is receiving insufficient incoming video for smooth streaming; viewers may experience buffering.noDatameans YouTube has no health information. It is not affirmative proof that the stream is healthy.- A good or OK health status is not a guarantee of playback for every viewer or of future health.
Do not collapse ingestion and health into one result: an active stream can still have a health issue.
Confirm the broadcast lifecycle
Inspect the associated liveBroadcast.status.lifeCycleStatus. The live state means the broadcast event is active; liveStarting is an intermediate state. The LiveBroadcasts API resource documents the lifecycle fields. YouTube’s Life of a Broadcast guide says the transition typically takes 5 to 10 seconds and may take up to a minute, so poll the state rather than declaring failure as soon as it is not yet live.
actualStartTime becomes available once the broadcast is live; actualEndTime becomes available once it is complete. A live lifecycle state confirms the event is active, not that the local encoder will remain healthy indefinitely.

Use Live Control Room or the watch page when appropriate
For a channel owner
If you do not want to build or use an API client, YouTube’s Live Control Room provides stream-health feedback while streaming, including error messages and instructions. See YouTube Help’s guidance on live-stream metrics.
For an external viewer
Playback on the public watch page is a useful end-to-end observation of what a viewer can see at that moment. It does not expose owner-only ingestion diagnostics, so it cannot replace the API or Control Room checks when you need to diagnose the encoder-to-YouTube path.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Monitor an always-on stream over time
A single process check, probe, API response, or playback observation is only a snapshot. For a continuous stream, schedule repeated checks and alert on sustained failures rather than a single transient result. Track the process, input probe, YouTube receiving status, broadcast lifecycle, and health independently so an alert identifies the layer that changed.

Choose a tolerance interval that fits the purpose of your stream. The cited documentation does not establish one universal polling or alert interval for every always-on broadcast.
What FFmpeg reconnect options can and cannot do
FFmpeg’s protocol documentation describes HTTP input options for reconnecting after a disconnect, reconnecting when EOF occurs (useful for live or endless streams), retrying on network errors, retrying for selected HTTP status codes, and limiting retry counts or delays. These controls are protocol-specific; check the help for the FFmpeg build you have installed and choose options for the actual input protocol. The FFmpeg documentation also describes RTMP as multimedia transport over TCP/IP.
Reconnect behavior can help recover from some transport failures, but retries are not proof that the source is readable now, YouTube is receiving the output, the broadcast is live, or the health status is clear. Confirm those outcomes with the checks above.
Troubleshoot common status mismatches
| Observation | What to check next |
|---|---|
FFmpeg process exists, but YouTube says inactive |
Inspect recent FFmpeg input and output logs, then verify the input separately with ffprobe. A running process alone does not establish successful delivery. |
ffprobe succeeds, but YouTube says inactive |
Treat the probe as evidence about the input only. Check FFmpeg’s output logs and YouTube’s receiving status; the probe does not test YouTube ingestion. |
YouTube says active, but the broadcast is not live |
Check whether the lifecycle is liveStarting and poll again. The transition typically takes 5 to 10 seconds and may take up to a minute. |
The broadcast is live, but viewers report buffering |
Inspect healthStatus and configurationIssues[], especially for videoIngestionStarved. A live lifecycle does not guarantee smooth playback. |
Health status says noData |
Do not interpret that as healthy. Check YouTube’s receiving status and Control Room feedback for additional signals. |
| FFmpeg logs show retries or reconnects | Determine whether the input protocol supports the configured reconnect behavior, then verify the current input and YouTube states independently. Retry messages alone do not establish recovery. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want an uploaded recording or playlist to keep a YouTube channel live without leaving a home computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud service for 24/7 YouTube streams. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud; it does not stream from a camera.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Nothing has to stay on at home: the stream runs in the cloud, so your computer can be off.
- One flat price per slot for any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps; the video streams as made, without re-encoding or quality tiers.
- Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card required. The monthly option is $9.99 per month.
StreamNeo is separate from the FFmpeg diagnostics above: it is an option for keeping uploaded videos live on YouTube, not a way to inspect an existing FFmpeg encoder’s status. Learn about StreamNeo or start the free first day.
