A match tells you that your hardware reaches the publisher’s stated threshold; it does not promise a particular frame rate, resolution, graphics preset or consistently smooth campaign.
The exact game and version matter more than the genre label. Stellaris, Civilization VI and WARNO publish different requirements, so there is no single “grand strategy PC specification.”

What “can run” actually means
System requirements are a compatibility screen, not a performance contract. “Meets minimum” means the listed operating system, processor, memory, graphics hardware and other requirements are at or above the game’s published floor. “Meets recommended” means the PC reaches the higher tier the publisher supplies for a better-targeted configuration. Neither label states an exact frame rate or guarantees that every map, late-game simulation or visual setting will behave identically on every computer.

Use the result to decide what to investigate next:
- Meets minimum: the PC is within the game’s stated baseline, but you still need to choose conservative settings and treat performance as unconfirmed.
- Meets recommended: the PC matches the publisher’s higher reference tier; this is a stronger starting point, not a promise of a specific refresh rate or resolution.
- Below minimum: identify the exact shortfall. Do not assume that adding a generic component will solve every problem.
Step 1: Identify the exact game, edition and platform
Start with the title you intend to install, not a broad category such as “grand strategy.” Requirements can differ between games, operating systems and editions. Confirm the full name, the storefront or publisher listing you will use, and whether the page is for Windows or another platform. A base game, expansion bundle or updated build may have a different listing from an older page.

Use the current requirement page
Open the game’s current publisher or storefront page and locate its PC system-requirements section. Steam’s pages for Stellaris and WARNO, for example, separate minimum and recommended Windows specifications. Civilization VI also publishes separate Windows tiers. Treat those pages as the authority for the version you are about to install, because requirements can change.
Record the page date and edition
Write down the date you checked and the exact edition or package name. The Steam examples cited here were accessed on 13 October 2026. That date applies to those examples only; it is not a guarantee that the listings will remain unchanged. Recheck the page immediately before buying or troubleshooting.
Step 2: Find your PC’s specifications in Windows
Gather the information before comparing anything. Windows exposes basic details in Settings, while its built-in diagnostic tools provide fuller processor, memory, graphics and DirectX information. Menu names can vary slightly between Windows versions.
Settings: quick operating-system and device details
- Open Settings.
- Choose System, then About.
- Record the Windows edition and version, system type or architecture, processor name and installed RAM shown on the page.
Use this screen as a quick inventory. If a requirement names 64-bit Windows, confirm that the system type is 64-bit rather than relying on the edition name alone.

System Information: the msinfo32 overview
- Open the Windows Run dialog or Start search.
- Enter
msinfo32and press Enter. - In System Summary, inspect the operating-system name, version, system type, processor and installed physical memory.
System Information is useful when Settings does not show enough context or when you need a single window to document the machine. Copy the model names exactly; a shortened marketing name can make a comparison ambiguous.
DirectX Diagnostic Tool: dxdiag
- Open Run or Start search and enter
dxdiag. - On the System tab, check the operating system, processor, memory and DirectX version.
- Open each Display tab to inspect the graphics processor, display-memory information and driver details.
- Use the tool’s save-information control if you need a text record for troubleshooting or support.
On a desktop with more than one graphics adapter, inspect every Display tab. A laptop may show an integrated adapter and a separate graphics processor; compare the game’s requirement with the adapter the game will actually use, not merely the first name shown.
Task Manager: a second view of memory and graphics
- Open Task Manager.
- Choose the Performance view.
- Select Memory to confirm installed RAM and select each GPU entry to see the adapter model and current memory information.
Task Manager is a useful cross-check when a specification appears inconsistent between tools. Close or note the names of multiple GPU entries so you do not accidentally compare the wrong adapter.

Create a simple checklist with one row per requirement. Compare like with like: an operating-system version with the required operating-system version, a processor model with the listed processor examples, installed RAM with required RAM, and the actual GPU and stated video memory with the graphics requirement. Also check DirectX, free storage and network requirements when the game page lists them.

If a page uses several example processors or graphics cards instead of one universal score, record the model names exactly. A CPU that sounds newer or faster is not automatically equivalent to a model named by the publisher.
Step 4: Interpret minimum and recommended tiers separately
Do not average the two tiers or treat “recommended” as a replacement for “minimum.” They answer different questions. Minimum describes the lower published target; recommended describes a stronger reference configuration. A computer can pass one field and fail another, so compare every row rather than relying on a single component.

The exact requirements on these pages are volatile. Use the current listing for a purchase or installation decision rather than treating the examples above as permanent specifications for those games or for the genre.

- Passes minimum: your value meets or exceeds the minimum wording for that field.
- Passes recommended: your value meets or exceeds the recommended wording for that field.
- Unclear: the model, architecture, VRAM, DirectX version or storage amount is not identified precisely enough to compare.
- Below minimum: your value is lower than the listed requirement.
Your overall result is limited by the weakest required field. A PC with recommended RAM but a GPU below minimum is not a recommended configuration. Resolve every “unclear” entry before drawing a conclusion.
Use a written comparison
For each row, write both values and the outcome, for example: “Game minimum RAM: 4 GB; PC installed RAM: 8 GB; status: passes minimum.” This makes a single shortfall visible and prevents a strong result in one category from hiding a failure in another.
Keep the conclusion narrow
A valid conclusion sounds like “This PC meets the listed minimum requirements for the Windows edition checked on 13 October 2026.” It should not become “This game will run at 60 frames per second” or “It will run on high settings,” because the requirements page does not establish those outcomes.
What to do when one component is below the requirement
Verify the identification first
Before considering hardware changes, repeat the check in msinfo32, dxdiag and Task Manager. Confirm that you copied the complete CPU and GPU model, selected the correct Display tab, recorded installed RAM rather than available RAM, and checked the drive where the game will be installed. A mistaken model name can look like a hardware failure.

Separate a missing requirement from an unknown value
If the game page lists DirectX, storage or network conditions and your notes do not include them, mark the field “unknown,” not “pass.” Return to the current listing and fill the gap. Likewise, a graphics page that names a particular VRAM amount cannot be evaluated from system RAM alone.
Investigate only the diagnosed shortfall
When a verified comparison shows one field below minimum, research that field and the exact PC model before choosing an upgrade. A graphics shortfall, for example, is a different problem from insufficient RAM or an unsupported operating-system architecture. The requirements pages do not support a universal component recommendation for every reader.
Recheck after any change
After replacing or adding a component, run the same checks again and record the new model, memory amount or operating-system status. Then compare the complete set of fields against the current game listing. Reaching one threshold does not remove the need to check the others.
Common comparison mistakes
- Using genre averages: there is no single requirement for all grand strategy games; the three Steam examples publish different tiers and values.
- Reading only the RAM line: CPU, GPU, operating system, DirectX and storage can be decisive even when memory passes.
- Confusing minimum with recommended: the labels are separate targets and should remain separate in your notes.
- Checking an old page: requirements are subject to change, so verify the current listing for the exact edition.
- Assuming a match proves smooth play: a requirements page does not specify your frame rate, resolution or graphics preset.
- Comparing brand names instead of models: record the complete processor and graphics model shown by Windows.
- Ignoring platform wording: a Windows requirement cannot automatically be applied to a different operating system.
A reusable checklist
- Write the exact game title, edition, storefront and operating system.
- Open the current publisher or storefront requirements page.
- Copy every minimum and recommended field: operating system, architecture, CPU, RAM, GPU, VRAM, DirectX, storage and network requirements where listed.
- Open Settings > System > About and record the basic device information.
- Run
msinfo32and confirm the processor, architecture and installed memory. - Run
dxdiag, inspect System and all Display tabs, and save the report if needed. - Use Task Manager > Performance to cross-check Memory and GPU entries.
- Compare each PC value with the corresponding minimum and recommended value.
- Resolve every unknown field and investigate any verified below-minimum field separately.
- State the result as minimum, recommended, unclear or below minimum, without claiming a guaranteed frame rate or settings level.
Bottom line
To check whether your PC can run a grand strategy game, compare the current requirements for that exact game with your own operating system, CPU, RAM, GPU, DirectX version, free storage and relevant network conditions. Windows Settings, msinfo32, dxdiag and Task Manager provide the needed specifications. Treat minimum and recommended as different targets, verify volatile listings again, and describe the result as compatibility evidence rather than a performance guarantee.
