If Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds will not connect, drops you from World Match, or returns you to the title screen, start with checks that distinguish a service problem from a local one: check your platform status, install every pending game and platform update, correct the device clock, then restart the game and network equipment. If Wi-Fi is involved, test the same race over Ethernet. PC players should also inspect VPN, proxy, firewall and antivirus permissions without disabling security wholesale. These steps cover the causes identified in SEGA’s CrossWorlds guidance and its network guide; they cannot fix an outage or another player’s unstable connection.
First determine whether the problem is widespread
A failed connection does not automatically mean your router is broken. Online play can fail because a platform service is having maintenance, your game is on an old build, your home network is unstable, or the other racer’s connection is struggling. Check scope before changing settings that are difficult to undo.

| Check | What to do | What the result tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Platform or client status | Check the current status page for the service you use. SEGA’s general network guide directs players to Steam, Epic and Xbox status pages. | A confirmed incident or maintenance window points to a service-side problem; wait for it to clear rather than changing router settings. |
| Game and platform updates | Open your platform’s downloads or update screen and install every available CrossWorlds and system/client update. | If an update is pending, online compatibility may be restored after installation and a restart. |
| Another online game or app | Test another online title or service on the same device and connection. | If several services fail, investigate the home network or platform account. If only CrossWorlds fails, concentrate on its version, permissions or service availability. |
| Friends on another platform | Ask whether players elsewhere can enter online races. | If others can connect, the issue may be local or peer-specific; this is not proof that CrossWorlds itself is down. |
No current CrossWorlds outage can be established from the available official guidance. Service status, maintenance, account entitlements and restrictions change, so check them at the moment the error occurs rather than relying on an old status report.
Install updates before troubleshooting advanced settings
Use the update screen for your console or PC client, install the current CrossWorlds build, and reboot if the platform requests it. SEGA’s December 18, 2025 notice said that the latest game update was required for online modes at that time. The notice identified Ver. 1.2.2 in that historical context; it does not establish that Ver. 1.2.2 is the current release now. Treat the version shown by your platform as authoritative.

Update the platform software or PC client as well as the game. A client that has been left open through an update can retain stale network or authentication state, so fully quit it after installation before launching CrossWorlds again.
Check the console or PC clock
Incorrect date, time or time-zone data can interfere with authentication and network handshakes. On your device, open the date-and-time settings, enable automatic time synchronisation, and confirm that the displayed date and time are correct. If automatic synchronisation is already enabled, turn it off, apply the correct time zone, then enable it again and restart the device.
SEGA calls out clock synchronisation in both CrossWorlds-specific guidance and its general network troubleshooting guide. This is a quick, reversible check, so perform it before changing firewall rules or router configuration.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteRestart the game, device and network equipment
A clean restart clears a stuck session and forces the device to obtain a fresh network connection. Follow this order:
- Exit CrossWorlds completely rather than leaving it suspended in the background.
- Close the PC game client if you are playing on a computer, then restart the console or PC.
- Unplug the modem and router from power.
- Leave them unplugged for five minutes. This is the interval specified in SEGA’s general procedure.
- Reconnect the modem and router, then wait until their normal connection lights settle.
- Launch the platform client, start CrossWorlds, and try the same online mode again.
If your internet equipment is a single gateway unit, remove power from that unit for the five-minute interval. Do not repeatedly pull power while it is updating firmware; wait for its normal lights and startup sequence first.

Compare Wi-Fi with a wired Ethernet connection
Wireless interference can come from neighbouring networks, electrical devices, distance, walls and channel congestion. A wired test separates those variables from the game and platform themselves. Connect the console or PC directly to the router with an Ethernet cable, then repeat the race or World Match attempt from the same location and account.
“To rule out your wireless connection as potential cause, please try to connect your device through an ethernet cable (if possible) and check if the situation improves.” — SEGA Support, “Network Troubleshooting,” updated March 10, 2026.

Ethernet is a diagnostic comparison, not a guarantee of faster or more reliable online play. If the wired attempt works while Wi-Fi fails, improve the wireless path by moving closer to the router, reducing interference, or using a less congested band where your equipment supports it. If both connections fail in the same way, the cause is more likely to be the platform service, game version, account, local security software, or the remote player.
| Connection test | Use it for | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Wi-Fi | Your normal wireless setup | Repeated drops or title-screen returns suggest investigating signal quality and interference. |
| Ethernet | A direct cable from the device to the router | Improvement points toward the wireless path; no improvement means Wi-Fi is less likely to be the sole cause. |
Check whether your console or PC has an Ethernet port and whether an adapter is required. A cable cannot resolve a remote service outage, an opponent’s network problem, or an account restriction.
PC-only checks: VPNs, proxies, firewalls and antivirus
PC network tools can intercept or filter the game client. If the problem began after installing a VPN, enabling a proxy, changing network settings, or updating security software, reverse that recent change and restart the client.

VPN and proxy
- Disconnect the VPN temporarily and close its background client.
- Open your operating system’s proxy settings and disable a proxy you added for testing or work.
- Restart the game client and retry online play.
Restore the VPN or proxy after the test if you need it for other work. A failed test does not prove that a VPN is incompatible; it only shows that the current route or filter may be involved.

Firewall and antivirus permissions
Keep protection enabled. Instead of turning off antivirus or the firewall for the whole computer, open the product’s permitted-app, application-control or exclusion settings and confirm that CrossWorlds and its legitimate platform client are allowed to communicate. SEGA’s guide recommends checking these permissions and contacting the security-product provider for exact menu steps.
If the PC is on a school, office or other restricted network, ask its administrator whether game traffic is blocked. You may not have authority to change those rules, and attempting to bypass them can violate the network’s policy.
Console-specific guidance
Nintendo Switch and Switch 2
SEGA’s Switch network-error FAQ recommends restarting the game and network equipment, trying a wired connection instead of wireless where possible, and checking the console clock. Repeat the general sequence above, then test online play after the system reports a stable connection.
The official CrossWorlds site lists Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 among the supported platforms. The Open Network Test FAQ said Nintendo Switch Online was required for Switch online modes such as World Match and Festa during that 2025 test, while no subscription was needed merely to participate in the test. Those statements were test-specific; confirm the released game’s current online-subscription requirement in Nintendo’s support information for your account and region.

PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5
The Japanese PlayStation 4 FAQ repeats the restart, wired-network and clock checks. It also warns that the opponent’s environment may be responsible when your own local checks reveal no fault. Apply the same reasoning on PlayStation 5: if other online services work and only one race disconnects, do not assume your console is defective.
Xbox consoles
Check Xbox service status before local changes, install the current console and game updates, then perform the modem/router restart and Ethernet comparison. Account, privacy and subscription requirements can vary by platform and region, so verify them in current Xbox support materials rather than relying on the 2025 test documentation.
Why World Match can disconnect even when your internet seems fine
A race is a session involving more than your device. A brief wireless interruption, packet loss, platform authentication delay, or a peer’s unstable route can end the match even when a web page loads normally. The PS4 FAQ specifically notes that the opponent’s environment can contribute.
- If every online attempt fails immediately, prioritise status, updates, clock and local-network checks.
- If matchmaking succeeds but one particular race drops, repeat the test with another lobby or friend. A peer-side problem becomes more plausible.
- If you return to the title screen after periods of instability, treat that as a symptom of the connection session being lost, not proof that saved data is damaged.
- If wired and wireless tests behave identically while other games work, preserve your settings and escalate rather than making broad router changes.
Crossplay, platform coverage and online requirements
SEGA’s official site lists CrossWorlds for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Steam and Epic Games. It advertises online play for up to 12 players and local play for one to four. The Open Network Test FAQ states that the game supports crossplay across platforms.

Use this order when you need a quick decision
- Status: Check the relevant Steam, Epic, Xbox or console service status page.
- Version: Install every available game, platform and client update.
- Clock: Enable automatic date-and-time synchronisation and verify the time zone.
- Restart: Fully close the game, reboot the device, unplug the modem/router for five minutes, reconnect, and wait for normal lights.
- Connection: Replace Wi-Fi with direct Ethernet temporarily and retry.
- PC filters: Disconnect VPN/proxy tools, undo recent network changes, and check narrow game/client permissions in firewall and antivirus settings.
- Peer test: Try another lobby or player to see whether only one session fails.
- Escalate: Gather the details below and contact the relevant platform or SEGA support channel.
What not to change first
The official guidance does not establish router port forwarding, custom DNS, buying a new router, disabling antivirus wholesale, or third-party “game booster” software as first-line CrossWorlds remedies. Those changes can introduce new problems and make later diagnosis harder. Use the reversible checks above first. If support later gives a specific network change for your platform and error, follow that instruction with a record of the original setting so you can undo it.
What to record before contacting support
Support can separate a local, client, platform, peer or service problem more quickly when the report is specific. Record:
- Platform and model, such as PS4, PS5, Switch, Switch 2, Xbox, Steam or Epic.
- Game version displayed by the platform and the date you last updated it.
- Your country or region and the account type used for online play.
- The exact error wording or code, including punctuation and capitalisation.
- Whether failure occurs during sign-in, matchmaking, loading, a race, or on return to the title screen.
- Whether other online games and platform services work.
- Whether a five-minute modem/router power cycle changed anything.
- Whether Ethernet works differently from Wi-Fi.
- Whether the problem affects every lobby or only a particular opponent.
- The approximate date and time, including your time zone, and whether a platform status page reported an incident.
Send platform-specific cases to the platform’s support service; use SEGA’s official support channel for CrossWorlds-specific errors. Do not include passwords, full payment details or other unnecessary account secrets.
When an Ethernet cable is worth trying
An Ethernet cable is the only optional accessory directly supported by the troubleshooting guidance, and only as a way to rule out wireless instability or improve the local link. Check that your router has an available LAN port and that your console or PC accepts the cable directly; some devices need a compatible adapter. Borrowing a cable for the diagnostic test is enough—you do not need to buy networking hardware to complete the other checks.
A cable will not correct a platform outage, an expired online entitlement, an incorrect game version, a blocked school or work network, or another player’s connection. Treat the result of the comparison, not the purchase itself, as the useful evidence.
