To check whether your PC can run a new Steam game, compare your Windows PC’s specifications with the game’s minimum and recommended requirements on its Steam Store page. You can find your processor, memory, Windows version and graphics details in built-in Windows tools. The comparison is a useful estimate—not a guarantee of launch success, frame rate or smooth play.
1. Find the game’s system requirements on Steam
Open the game’s Steam Store page and find its system requirements. Steam Support says, “The system requirements for all games are listed on the game’s Store page.” Record the minimum and recommended entries separately; they are different targets, not interchangeable promises about performance. Steam Support’s performance guidance also cautions that simply meeting the requirements does not mean you will have high FPS or strong in-game performance.
Note every requirement the listing gives: operating system, processor (CPU), memory (RAM), graphics card (GPU), storage, and any specific graphics memory (VRAM), DirectX or other API requirement. The exact categories vary by game.
2. Find your PC’s specifications in Windows
Processor, RAM and Windows details
Open Settings > System > About. Check the processor, installed RAM, system type and Windows version. The system type tells you whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit, which can matter if a game specifies an architecture.

Graphics card and graphics details
For a quick look at your graphics hardware, open Task Manager > Performance > GPU. For additional display and system details, press Windows key + R, enter dxdiag and review the Display tab. Microsoft documents these built-in ways to check Windows and graphics specifications in its Windows device specifications guide; Steam also describes using dxdiag to view basic system information in its driver guidance.
Storage and free space
Check the game’s required storage against available free space on the drive where you plan to install it. Windows Storage settings or File Explorer can show drive capacity and free space. A drive’s total size is not the same as the space currently available.

3. Compare matching requirements
Compare each item with the same category in the game listing. Use complete CPU and GPU model names rather than relying on the brand or a model number alone: different product families do not necessarily perform alike, and a higher-looking number is not proof of a better match.
| Compare | What to check |
|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows version and, if stated, system architecture |
| Processor | Your full CPU model against the listed CPU model |
| Memory | Installed RAM against the game’s stated amount |
| Graphics | Your full GPU model, plus any stated VRAM or graphics API requirement |
| Storage | Required capacity against free space on the intended installation drive |
Repeat the comparison once against the minimum tier and once against the recommended tier. If a CPU or GPU model in the listing is unfamiliar, look for a reliable comparison using the full model names rather than guessing from the naming scheme.

4. Understand what the comparison can—and cannot—tell you
Meeting the minimum requirements suggests the game may run at constrained settings; it does not establish a particular frame rate or guarantee smooth performance. The recommended tier is a more cautious target for stronger performance, but it still does not promise a specific FPS or experience. Steam warns that even a PC at or near the listed requirements can encounter performance or launch issues.
Actual results can also be affected by factors beyond the listed hardware. Steam notes that outdated graphics drivers can reduce performance even when the video hardware meets the requirements. Background applications and limited available memory can matter too: memory pressure may lead to disk swapping and frame-rate hitches. No universal conversion turns a requirements list into a guaranteed FPS, resolution or settings preset.

- Turn on the Bright Lights: With the built-in RGB lighting, take your gaming experience to the next level by pressing the MSI LED button to cycle through lighting options. Customize lighting even further with MSI Center software.
5. Decide what to do if your PC is close to the minimum
- If one component falls short: treat that as a reason for caution, not proof of failure. Check the exact component model and any game-specific requirement before buying or installing.
- If you meet minimum but not recommended: the game may run with reduced settings, but the requirements alone cannot predict how well.
- If your hardware meets the listing but performance seems poor: check for current graphics drivers and close unnecessary background applications; available memory can affect smoothness.
- If you are deciding whether to upgrade: first identify the specific game and the component that does not meet its requirements. A generic upgrade recommendation is not reliable without that information.
For a personalized assessment, gather the game’s current requirements, your CPU and GPU model, installed RAM, Windows version, free storage, and your intended resolution and settings. Without those details, a compatibility or FPS verdict would be guesswork.
