Open the Steam Store page for the exact game, find System Requirements, and compare every listed minimum requirement with your PC: operating system, processor, RAM, graphics, DirectX and storage. Then read the game’s own online-play notes. Meeting minimum specs is a useful compatibility screen, not a promise of smooth play or a particular frame rate.
1. Find the game’s requirements on Steam
Open the Steam Store page for the specific title and scroll to System Requirements. Requirements vary by game, and a listing may specify which platforms they apply to. Check both the minimum and recommended specifications if you want to judge not only whether the game may launch, but how your PC compares with the more demanding target. Steam Support explains where to find system requirements and how to interpret them.
2. Check your PC’s specifications
In Windows, open Settings and look under System for an overview of your device and operating system. Task Manager can also show hardware information. Compare the details you find with the categories listed by the game; Microsoft’s overview covers processor, memory, storage, graphics and operating system. Microsoft’s guide to checking PC specs describes these categories and inspection methods.
Check DirectX and graphics details with dxdiag
- Search Windows for
dxdiagand open the DirectX Diagnostic Tool. - On the System tab, read the DirectX version.
- Open the Display tab to identify the graphics adapter and view display information relevant to the game’s requirements.
Microsoft notes that a game may not work properly if it requires a different DirectX version. See Microsoft’s instructions for checking your DirectX version.

3. Compare each listed requirement with the matching PC component
Work down the game’s list rather than judging by one headline spec or by how old the computer seems. Match the processor to the processor, memory to RAM, and graphics model or capability to the graphics requirement. Also check Windows version and architecture, DirectX, and available storage whenever they are specified.
- Operating system: Check that your Windows version and any specified architecture meet the listing.
- Processor: Compare the CPU model or stated requirements, not just its clock speed or age.
- Memory: Compare the game’s RAM requirement with the PC’s installed memory.
- Graphics: Check the adapter model and any named capability or feature support. Installed graphics memory alone does not establish that a GPU meets a requirement.
- DirectX: Compare the version shown in dxdiag with the version the game lists.
- Storage: Check that enough space is available on the drive where you plan to install the game.
Some games name a particular graphics device or capability, so a match cannot be determined from a single number such as graphics memory. Steam also cautions that integrated graphics are often weaker than dedicated graphics, and that meeting the listed requirements does not guarantee good performance. Steam’s software troubleshooting guidance gives context for these limits.

4. Check the multiplayer connection note separately
Hardware compatibility does not tell you whether a game’s online mode has a connection requirement. Read the game’s own Store listing for its online-play notes. For example, the Steam listing for Hnefatafl says an Internet connection is required for online play; that is a requirement for that title, not a universal bandwidth or latency threshold for Steam multiplayer games.

If one of your PC’s specifications falls below the listed minimum, the game may not run as intended. If you meet the minimum, that still does not establish a particular frame rate or guarantee smooth performance: results vary with the PC’s configuration, and a game’s minimum is not the same target as its recommended requirements. No universal pass/fail score or FPS guarantee follows from this comparison.
