To find out whether your PC can run a visually demanding action game, compare the game’s current official system requirements with your exact PC hardware—not just its DirectX version. Check the operating system, processor, RAM, graphics card and its graphics capabilities, storage, and any stated VRAM or feature requirements. A match to minimum requirements is a compatibility baseline, not a promise of smooth play at your preferred resolution or graphics settings.
No particular game or PC configuration is specified here, so there is no responsible way to give a pass-or-fail verdict. The steps below show how to make that comparison and interpret the result.

Can my PC run this game? Separate compatibility from performance
“Can my PC run this game?” can mean three different things. Keeping them separate prevents a requirements check from promising more than it can establish.
- Will it launch? The PC needs a supported operating system and the graphics capabilities the game actually requires. A PC can fail this check even if one headline specification, such as its DirectX version, appears to match.
- Does it meet the published requirements? Compare the PC with the game’s minimum and recommended configurations. These are the developer’s stated reference points, not a guarantee for every hardware configuration.
- Will it feel good to play at my settings? That depends on the particular game, resolution, visual settings, GPU implementation, drivers, available graphics memory, and the rest of the system. A requirements list alone does not establish a frame rate or guarantee smooth play.
For a visually demanding action game, the GPU and its supported graphics features deserve close attention, but do not skip the CPU, memory, operating system, or storage requirements. A weak point in any required component can prevent launch or constrain the experience. A machine may pass a basic compatibility check and still need lower settings, a lower resolution, or a different target than the player expected.

How to check if your PC can run a game
1. Find the game’s current official requirements
Start with the developer or publisher’s official requirements for the exact game and edition you intend to play. A store page can be useful, but confirm that it reflects the current version and the correct platform or edition. Record the minimum and recommended specifications separately. Note whether the page gives specific GPU models, a VRAM amount, a storage type, a graphics API or shader requirement, or any other optional feature dependency.
Write the requirements down in a small checklist rather than relying on memory. Include the required operating-system version, processor, installed system memory, graphics card, graphics memory if stated, storage capacity and type, and named technologies such as a particular DirectX feature. If the developer gives different requirements for different presets, resolutions, or features, preserve those distinctions.
Do not substitute requirements from a similarly named game, a different edition, or an old listing. Requirements can change with updates, and a general article cannot supply a valid hardware threshold for a game that has not been identified. If the official page is unclear, the unresolved item should remain unresolved rather than being filled with a guess.

On Windows, the built-in System Information and Task Manager’s Performance view are convenient places to inspect the installed PC. Record the Windows version, processor model, installed RAM, graphics-card model, storage device type, and available free space. Use the full device name where possible. If Windows shows multiple graphics adapters, identify which is integrated and which is discrete rather than assuming the more familiar-looking name is the one the game will use.
Check storage capacity and free space, not just the drive letter. A game can require a stated amount of space, and the PC must have that space available when it is installed or updated. If the game names a storage technology, record whether the relevant drive is the required type. Do not treat the presence of a fast drive as proof that every other requirement is satisfied.
If a device name is unclear, verify it using information from the PC or component manufacturer. Exact model names matter: two cards with similar names, or integrated and discrete GPUs with superficially similar labels, should not be treated as equivalent without checking their capabilities. A laptop may also expose both an integrated adapter and a discrete adapter, so the adapter listed first is not automatically the one providing game rendering.
3. Check the installed DirectX version
- Open Windows Search and type
dxdiag. - Open the DirectX Diagnostic Tool.
- On the System tab, read the DirectX version under System Information.
Microsoft Support’s instruction is: “In the DirectX Diagnostic Tool, select the System tab, then check the DirectX version under System Information.” This reports the installed DirectX version; it is one useful data point, not a complete test of a graphics card’s capabilities or expected game performance.

Use the tool to document what is installed, then return to the game’s own requirement. A DirectX-version match does not prove that the GPU supports every feature, feature level, or shader model that the game calls for. It also does not indicate how quickly the GPU will render a particular scene. Treat the result as part of the checklist, not as a pass/fail button.
4. Compare every listed requirement
Put the PC’s exact hardware beside the corresponding game requirement. Compare the operating system with the required OS; the processor with the CPU requirement; installed RAM with system memory; the exact GPU with the listed graphics card; and available storage with the game’s storage requirement. If the game specifies VRAM, compare that separately from system RAM. Also note any named graphics API, feature level, or shader requirement.
Requirements may use different kinds of descriptions. A specific model name gives you something concrete to verify. A broad family or performance tier may require more investigation. Do not assume that a PC passes because one component looks newer, has a larger number in its name, or satisfies a different requirement. A larger amount of system RAM cannot compensate for a GPU that lacks a required feature, and a powerful GPU cannot make an unsupported operating system compatible.
Mark each item as meeting, below, above, or unclear. “Unclear” is a legitimate result when the official requirement uses a feature term that has not been verified for the exact GPU. Resolve that item through the GPU manufacturer’s specifications or leave it flagged for testing; do not silently convert uncertainty into a pass.

5. Assess minimum and recommended specifications independently
A PC that meets the minimum specifications has reached the game’s stated baseline, but minimum does not mean high settings, a particular resolution, or consistently smooth play. Minimum specifications are primarily a compatibility and entry-level performance reference. They do not promise that every scene will be fluid or that the game will look the way it does in promotional footage.
A PC closer to or above the recommended configuration is a more useful starting point for a demanding game, but the recommendation still does not promise a particular frame rate. Recommended parts may be based on a developer’s chosen test configuration, and other combinations can behave differently because of drivers, implementation, memory behavior, and settings.
If the PC falls between the two configurations, treat the outcome as uncertain rather than as a clear pass. Lowering resolution or demanding graphics options may help if the game launches, but the requirements alone cannot predict exactly how much adjustment will be needed. If one component is below minimum while others exceed recommended levels, identify that specific shortfall instead of averaging the specifications into a single score.

Why a DirectX-version match is not enough
The DirectX version shown by dxdiag describes the software environment installed on Windows. It does not prove that the GPU supports every graphics feature a particular game needs, and it says nothing by itself about how quickly that GPU can render the game.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteSteam Support warns that a video card can meet a game’s minimum DirectX requirement while still lacking the pixel shader level the game requires. Microsoft’s Direct3D documentation also explains that feature-level support depends on the GPU, while performance depends on the hardware implementation. In practical terms, check the exact GPU model against the game’s stated graphics requirements and any shader or feature-level details. Do not use DirectX version alone to rank two cards or declare one compatible.
This distinction matters especially when comparing integrated and discrete graphics. A shared or integrated graphics solution should not be assumed to perform like a discrete card simply because both names include a similar series label or both report the same DirectX version. Verify the exact models and the capabilities relevant to the game. The card’s implementation, available graphics memory, and the way the game uses physical memory can all affect the result.
What to compare when two PCs or graphics cards are in the running
For a useful comparison, keep the game and intended settings fixed. A card may be adequate at one resolution and unsuitable for the same game at a more demanding resolution or quality preset. Compare the evidence that relates to the actual question, rather than choosing a winner by one headline specification.
| Comparison | What to check | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Exact GPU model | Full model name and whether it is integrated or discrete | Which hardware is being assessed; similar labels do not establish equivalent capabilities. |
| Graphics features | The game’s stated API, feature-level, or shader requirements and the GPU’s supported capabilities | Whether a basic DirectX-version match hides a feature mismatch. |
| Minimum and recommended status | How each PC compares with both configurations | Whether it meets the stated baseline and how it compares with the developer’s more suitable starting point. |
| Target resolution and visual quality | The resolution and settings you intend to use | Whether the available evidence applies to the experience you want, rather than to a different workload. |
| VRAM and system memory | Any game-stated VRAM requirement and the PC’s available graphics and system memory | Whether memory-related requirements are met. Settings and available physical memory can affect how well VRAM is used. |
| CPU and storage | The game’s processor and storage requirements against the PC’s components | Whether other required parts of the configuration also match. |
| Performance evidence | When available, benchmarks for the same game at similar settings and resolution on a comparable configuration | A more relevant performance indication than a DirectX version or requirements match alone. Check who published the benchmark and when. |
A benchmark is only as useful as its match to your situation. Results from another game, a different resolution, different settings, or a substantially different PC configuration may not answer how your own system will perform. Do not turn a result from one configuration into a guaranteed frame rate for another. Prefer tests that name the game version, graphics preset, resolution, hardware configuration, publisher, and date.
What if the game has an extra feature requirement?
Some games may state additional requirements beyond ordinary operating-system and component specifications. Check the selected game’s own page before treating any feature as necessary. DirectStorage, for example, is not a universal requirement for PC games. Microsoft documents its prerequisites as an NVMe SSD, a DirectX 12 GPU, and Shader Model 6.0 support; apply those checks only if the game actually uses or requires that feature.
The same principle applies to other named graphics or storage capabilities: a feature requirement is relevant when the game specifies it, not simply because it exists in Windows or on newer hardware. Do not add a technology to the checklist solely because another game uses it.

If the PC meets requirements but performance is poor
Check the actual game settings
If the game launches, test it at the resolution and settings you intend to use. If performance is inadequate, reduce demanding visual options or lower the resolution, then assess the result again. A requirements comparison cannot select the right settings for every PC, and the best adjustment depends on the game and the bottleneck.
Record what changed between tests. A result at a lower resolution or quality preset answers a different question from the result at the original target. Avoid describing a lower-setting test as proof that the PC can deliver the desired high-quality experience.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Recheck which GPU is being compared
When the PC has more than one graphics adapter, confirm the exact model being evaluated and whether the game is using the expected graphics hardware. A comparison against the wrong adapter can make the system appear to meet—or miss—the game’s requirement incorrectly. Integrated and discrete adapters can coexist, and their names may be deceptively similar.
Look beyond a single component
Revisit the full comparison: CPU, system RAM, GPU capabilities, graphics memory if specified, storage, and operating system. Microsoft notes that game configuration behavior varies across the broad range of PC hardware. Graphics settings and available physical memory can also affect how well VRAM is used, so neither a GPU name nor its memory figure alone settles the performance question.
If the game fails to launch, first distinguish an unsupported requirement from a performance problem. A missing feature or unsupported operating system calls for compatibility investigation; a game that launches but runs poorly calls for settings and configuration testing. Those are different diagnoses and should not be reported as the same failure.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to state the result accurately
After checking the requirements, describe what you know without promising a result the evidence cannot support. For example, say that a PC meets the published minimum but not the recommended specification, or that it appears to match the listed components but its GPU feature support still needs verification. If the target is smooth play at a particular resolution and quality level, use relevant evidence for that game and a comparable PC—or test the game at those settings if it is already installed.
A careful conclusion can include three parts: the launch or compatibility status, the comparison with minimum and recommended requirements, and the remaining performance uncertainty. This is more informative than a single “yes” or “no.” State the exact component that falls short, the exact feature that is unverified, or the settings under which the test was made.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I check if my PC can run a game?
Find the exact game’s current official minimum and recommended requirements, then compare its operating system, CPU, RAM, GPU, VRAM, storage, DirectX or shader requirements with the exact hardware installed in your PC. Use Windows System Information and Task Manager to identify components, and use dxdiag to read the installed DirectX version.
Is meeting the minimum requirement enough for smooth play?
No. Minimum specifications are a compatibility baseline and do not promise a particular resolution, graphics preset, or frame rate. A PC that meets only minimum may need lower settings or resolution, while recommended specifications are a more useful starting point but still are not a frame-rate guarantee.
Does having the required DirectX version mean my GPU is compatible?
Not necessarily. The DirectX version reported by dxdiag is only one data point. Steam Support notes that a card can meet a game’s minimum DirectX requirement and still lack the required pixel-shader level. Check the exact GPU’s feature-level and shader support against the game’s requirements.
Where do I find my DirectX version in Windows?
Search Windows for dxdiag, open the DirectX Diagnostic Tool, select the System tab, and read DirectX version under System Information. Microsoft Support gives this same instruction. Remember that the result does not measure the GPU’s complete capabilities or performance.
How should I compare an integrated GPU with a discrete graphics card?
Compare the exact model names and supported graphics features. Similar series labels or the same reported DirectX version do not make integrated and discrete GPUs equivalent. Identify which adapter the game will use and verify its capabilities against the game’s stated GPU, shader, and feature requirements.
What should I do if my PC is between minimum and recommended specifications?
Treat the result as uncertain rather than a guaranteed pass. If the game launches, try lower resolution or less demanding graphics options, then evaluate the actual result. Requirements alone cannot predict exactly which settings will be needed or what frame rate another configuration will produce.
Recommended Free Tools
Is DirectStorage required for every demanding PC game?
No. DirectStorage should be checked only when the selected game says it uses or requires it. Microsoft documents prerequisites of an NVMe SSD, a DirectX 12 GPU, and Shader Model 6.0 support, but those prerequisites should not be generalized to every game.
Can a benchmark prove exactly how my PC will perform?
A benchmark is useful only when it matches the same game, similar settings and resolution, and a comparable hardware configuration. Check the publisher and date. Results from another game or substantially different PC should not be converted into a guaranteed frame rate for your system.
The Bottom Line
Check the named game’s current official requirements, identify your exact PC components, and compare minimum and recommended specifications item by item. Use dxdiag for the installed DirectX version, but verify the GPU’s actual feature and shader support separately. Meeting minimum means the game may be compatible; it does not guarantee smooth play at your preferred settings.
