Before buying a remastered PS1 game, verify the exact console edition, included games and expansions, presentation options, controls, saves, languages, accessibility features, and current regional listing. “Remastered” is a marketing label, not a complete specification. The same word can describe a careful restoration, a collection with modest changes, or a release whose features differ between PS4 and PS5.
Start with the exact release, not the word “remastered”
Open the current official product page for the version you intend to buy. Record the platform, region, edition name and format before comparing reviews or watching videos. A listing for a PS4 game may include a PS5 version, but that does not prove that every feature works identically on both systems. PlayStation product pages can explicitly warn that some PS4 features may be absent when the game is played on PS5.

Check these details together:
- Platform: Is the product a PS4 version, a PS5 version, or both?
- Edition: Is it the base remaster, a collection, a deluxe package or a bundle with separate downloadable content?
- Region: Does the page apply to your country and account region?
- Format: Is the offer digital, physical, or both? Do not assume a disc exists because the original game had one.
- Compatibility: Are there platform-specific limitations, upgrade rules or missing features?
If a store page is vague, treat that vagueness as a reason to pause. A console logo, a new box image and the word “remastered” do not establish resolution, frame rate, control options or save behavior.

Collections need a contents check before a price check. The title may combine several original games, expansions, bonus levels or cosmetic extras, while a similarly named edition may contain less. Read the complete included-content list on the product page for your region.

Use a contents table
Write down each item and mark whether it is included in the package you are viewing:
| Item to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Original game | A collection may omit one entry or include only selected installments. |
| Expansion or bonus campaign | Expansion names are easy to miss in a headline but can represent substantial original content. |
| Levels, missions or modes | Some releases add or remove individual scenarios rather than a complete expansion. |
| Separate downloadable content | “Included” may mean installed in the package, included as a code, or sold separately; confirm the wording. |
| Save and trophy structure | Multiple games may use separate save menus or trophy lists. |
Example: Tomb Raider I–III Remastered
The U.S. PlayStation listing for Tomb Raider I–III Remastered names all three games and their associated expansions:
| Original game | Expansion listed for the collection |
|---|---|
| Tomb Raider I | Unfinished Business |
| Tomb Raider II | Golden Mask |
| Tomb Raider III | The Lost Artifact |
That list is a useful model for checking any collection, but it is not a universal package standard. Verify the equivalent list on the product page for your own region, because names, editions and availability can differ.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFind out what the visual remaster actually changes
Ask for specific changes instead of assuming that “remastered” means a particular resolution or frame rate. Look for the developer’s description of upgraded models, textures, lighting, effects, menus, aspect or presentation choices, performance targets and audio. If the official materials do not state a resolution or frame rate, leave those figures unconfirmed.
Check for an original-look option
Some remasters let you switch between an updated presentation and the original polygonal appearance. This can matter when you prefer the historical look, want to compare scenes, or find that new effects obscure the original art direction. Confirm whether the switch is available during play, only in a menu, or not at all.
Rank #2
- Tomb Raider I, II & III Remastered /PS5
The PlayStation listing for Tomb Raider I–III Remastered describes upgraded graphics and an option to switch back to the original polygon visuals. Aspyr’s Chris Bashaar, Director of Product, explained on PlayStation.Blog on January 16, 2024: “A critical feature for any updates we made was to allow the users to toggle back to the original look and feel for Tomb Raider I, II, and III.” That is a title-specific design choice, not a promise that another PS1 remaster has the same toggle.
Separate visual restoration from new art
Ask whether the project restores original assets, replaces them, or offers both. A replacement can improve readability while changing colors, silhouettes or atmosphere. A toggle can preserve the choice; a release without one may commit you to the new interpretation. Developer explanations are more useful here than retailer adjectives such as “enhanced” or “definitive.”

A modern console can output high-resolution video, but that does not establish the internal rendering resolution or a locked frame rate for a particular remaster. Only quote those numbers when the current official materials identify them and specify the platform.
Check the control scheme and gameplay changes
PS1 games often built their difficulty and movement around controls that feel unusual today. A remaster may preserve those controls, add a modern scheme, or alter gameplay systems. Determine which approach the specific title uses.
Look for selectable control styles
Find out whether the original controls remain available, whether modern controls are optional, and whether you can change the setting at any time. A toggle is valuable if you want historical accuracy for one session and contemporary movement for another. Also check whether the new scheme changes camera behavior, aiming, movement in narrow spaces or the timing of platforming.

- Solve ancient mysteries: Find treasures of the ancient world by solving puzzles and find mysteries that fell victim to time.
- Globetrotter Adventure: Follow Lara Croft around the world and face deadly enemies and dangerous myths.
Aspyr says Tomb Raider I–III Remastered preserves the original tank-style controls as a menu option and adds modern controls. The company describes preserving the original games’ gameplay while adding features such as graphical changes and photo mode. Those statements explain that collection’s design; they should not be generalized to every remaster.
Identify changes that affect the original challenge
- Movement or camera assistance that makes navigation easier.
- Rebalanced enemy behavior, damage, checkpoints or item placement.
- New tutorials, hints or automatic targeting.
- Altered glitches, exploits or sequence breaks that longtime players may consider part of the original experience.
- Different button layouts, vibration behavior or camera inversion settings.
If the listing says “gameplay preserved,” read the developer’s explanation to see what that phrase covers. It may refer to levels and story while leaving room for control, camera or quality-of-life changes.
Verify saving, pausing and offline play
Save behavior can matter more than a visual upgrade, particularly in games designed around limited save opportunities. Look for the exact save method: manual saves, checkpoints, autosaves, save slots, passwords or a combination.
Questions to answer before purchase
- Can you create a manual save, and where?
- Are saves shared across the games in a collection or kept separate?
- Does pausing work while offline?
- Does suspending the console preserve progress, or is a normal save required?
- Can you copy, delete or manage saves using the console’s standard tools?
The PlayStation listing for Tomb Raider I–III Remastered identifies manual save points and says the game can be paused while offline. Use those details as an example of the specificity to look for, not as evidence about another title.
Check language, accessibility and player requirements
Do not assume that a PS1 remaster supports the language, subtitles or accessibility settings you need just because the original release did. Open the listing’s language and accessibility sections and distinguish interface, subtitles and voice languages where the page does so.

Language checks
- Which languages are supported for menus and text?
- Are subtitles available independently of voice language?
- Does the regional page list different language support from another territory?
- Are language packs included or downloaded separately?
Accessibility checks
Look for the concrete options rather than a general accessibility badge: subtitle controls, text size, color or contrast settings, control remapping, camera assistance, motion reduction, audio sliders, screen-reader support and difficulty or assist modes. Availability can vary by platform and region, so use the current listing for your account location.
The PlayStation product page for Tomb Raider I–III Remastered includes accessibility information and voice/screen language details. A comparable page for another game may list different categories or fewer specifics.
Player count and account requirements
Confirm whether the release is single-player, local multiplayer or online. Check whether an online connection, account sign-in, subscription or separate service is required for any feature. A classic game may be playable offline while still offering optional online trophies, cloud saves or updates; the listing should distinguish those requirements.
Compare editions using the same questions
When two versions or collections are available, compare them in one table instead of relying on a higher price or a “deluxe” label.
| Comparison axis | What to record |
|---|---|
| Included games and expansions | Every original game, expansion, level pack and bonus. |
| Graphics and presentation | Upgraded assets, original-look toggle, visual modes and any stated performance information. |
| Controls and gameplay | Original controls, modern controls, remapping and documented gameplay changes. |
| Console compatibility | PS4/PS5 versions, upgrade terms and features that may be absent on another platform. |
| Saves, languages and accessibility | Save method, offline pause, text and voice languages, and named accessibility options. |
| Price and format | Current regional price, digital or physical format, seller and edition terms at the moment of purchase. |
Only compare values that are actually stated. If a listing does not disclose a frame rate, physical edition or particular accessibility option, record it as “not stated” rather than treating the omission as proof that the feature is absent.

Use a practical pre-purchase workflow
- Open the official regional listing. Confirm the country, console, edition and format shown at the top of the page.
- Copy the contents list. Record every game, expansion, bonus mode and separate download.
- Read the feature description. Mark exact claims about graphics, original presentation, audio, photo mode and performance.
- Check controls. Look for original and modern schemes, remapping, camera settings and any stated gameplay changes.
- Check practical play features. Verify saves, checkpoints, pause behavior, offline play, player count and account or subscription requirements.
- Check language and accessibility sections. Match the listed options to your own requirements rather than assuming parity with the original.
- Review compatibility notes. Pay attention to warnings that a PS4 feature may not be present when running on PS5.
- Confirm current purchase terms. Recheck price, seller, stock, delivery, refund terms and whether the format is the one you want immediately before paying.
Understand availability and licensing risk
Older PS1 games are not always simple to republish. The PlayStation Store team has explained that a rerelease can require investigating expired licenses, ownership of publishing rights and permission to release the game on a later platform. Ross McGrath of the SCEE PlayStation Store Team noted that some original licenses covered only the life of the original product and did not anticipate a later platform release; in other cases, a publisher may no longer exist.
This context explains why an older title can disappear, return in a different form or be unavailable in one region. It does not prove that any particular remaster will leave a store or that a specific game is about to become unavailable. Treat current availability, price and stock as changeable facts and verify them on the live purchase listing.
Legitimate-availability checks
- Buy from the platform store or a clearly identified authorized seller.
- Confirm that the seller’s edition matches the platform and region listed.
- For a physical copy, check whether the product is new, used, complete or a code-only package.
- For digital purchases, check account-region restrictions and refund conditions before checkout.
- Do not pay a premium merely because a listing uses words such as “rare” or “definitive” without documenting what is included.
Use Tomb Raider I–III Remastered as a reading exercise
The collection demonstrates why a buyer should inspect the full listing and developer explanation. The PlayStation page identifies PS4 and PS5 versions, names the three games and their expansions, describes upgraded graphics with a switch to original polygon visuals, and lists manual saving, offline pausing, accessibility information and language support. It also carries a compatibility caveat about some PS4 features being absent on PS5.
Aspyr’s product explanation adds context that a short store summary cannot: the team used the original source code and engine, aimed to preserve original gameplay, retained tank-style controls as a toggle, and added modern controls, graphical changes and photo mode. Aspyr’s Director of Product also reported “over 200 trophies” for this collection. That figure belongs to this title and should not be treated as a typical remaster count.
When evaluating another PS1 remaster, look for the same level of specificity. A strong listing lets you identify what was preserved, what was changed and what depends on your console. A weak listing leaves those decisions to guesswork.
Red flags that warrant a closer check
- The page names a collection but does not enumerate every included game or expansion.
- “Enhanced graphics” appears without saying whether original presentation can be restored.
- A modern-control claim does not say whether original controls remain selectable.
- The product is shown for multiple consoles with no compatibility notes.
- Save, language or accessibility information is missing despite being important to your use case.
- A retailer’s title conflicts with the platform owner’s official contents list.
- A physical-looking image is used, but the current offer does not confirm a physical edition.
- A price, discount or stock statement is copied from an old page rather than checked at checkout.
None of these signs proves that a game is poor. They indicate that you need a more authoritative description before committing money.
Make the final decision
Buy when the release matches your console and region, contains the games and extras you want, offers acceptable visual and control choices, and documents the save, language and accessibility features you require. Wait when a missing detail affects your decision and the official page does not answer it. Search for a developer explanation or a platform-specific support note rather than filling the gap with assumptions from the original PS1 release.

The most reliable habit is simple: treat “remastered” as the beginning of your checklist. The exact edition page, compatibility notes and developer feature description tell you what you are actually purchasing.
