Compare your PC’s operating system, processor, memory, graphics card and available storage with Rockstar Games’ published minimum requirements for the Windows PC version of Red Dead Redemption 2. Rockstar’s Customer Support requirements article, last updated April 30, 2024, lists a minimum tier and a recommended tier, but neither tier promises a particular resolution, graphics preset or frame rate. If a component is below the minimum or cannot be matched confidently—especially the graphics card—treat compatibility as uncertain rather than assuming the game will work.

Red Dead Redemption 2 PC requirements at a glance

The table below reproduces the Windows PC requirements published by Rockstar Games Customer Support in its article last updated April 30, 2024. The processor and graphics models are Rockstar’s named examples, not benchmark results. The table does not state what frame rate, resolution or visual quality either tier will deliver.

Component Minimum Recommended
Operating system Windows 10 64-bit Windows 10 64-bit
Processor Intel Core i5-2500K / AMD FX-6300 Intel Core i7-4770K / AMD Ryzen 5 1500X
Memory 8 GB 12 GB
Graphics Nvidia GeForce GTX 770 with 2 GB / AMD Radeon R9 280 with 3 GB Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 with 6 GB / AMD Radeon RX 480 with 4 GB
Storage 150 GB HDD space 150 GB space
Sound DirectX-compatible sound card DirectX-compatible sound card

These are named requirements, not a complete list of every possible compatible processor or graphics card. A model that is not listed cannot be declared equivalent from this table alone. Rockstar also warns that some mobile chipsets, integrated and AGP graphics cards may be incompatible, and that unlisted specifications may not be supported.

Read the minimum and recommended columns as two whole-system comparisons, not as a menu where one stronger component cancels out another that falls short. For example, matching the recommended processor does not make a graphics adapter that cannot match the minimum graphics row a confirmed match. Likewise, 12 GB of RAM does not compensate for insufficient installation space. Record each row on its own before drawing a conclusion.

The graphics entries include both a model and a video-memory amount: the minimum examples pair a GTX 770 with 2 GB and an R9 280 with 3 GB; the recommended examples pair a GTX 1060 with 6 GB and an RX 480 with 4 GB. These are the figures Rockstar lists, not a universal VRAM cutoff that makes other cards equivalent. Brand, family name, or memory capacity alone is not enough to compare a different GPU confidently.

Find your PC’s specifications in Windows

Record the exact model names and values before comparing anything. A broad label such as “Intel graphics,” “AMD Radeon,” or “8 GB memory” by itself may not tell you whether your PC matches Rockstar’s listed graphics hardware or which adapter a game may use. A short written inventory prevents you from mixing up the processor, system memory, graphics memory and storage on different drives.

Check Windows, processor and installed memory

  1. Open Settings > System > About.
  2. Note the Windows edition and version, processor model, and installed RAM shown on the page.
  3. Compare the operating system with the listed Windows 10 64-bit requirement. If the page does not make clear whether Windows is 64-bit, check the device specifications shown in About before marking the operating-system row as matched.
  4. Write down the full processor model rather than just the manufacturer or product family. Compare that model with the examples in the requirements table; do not infer equivalence from a familiar brand name alone.

Installed RAM is the system-memory figure to compare with the 8 GB minimum and 12 GB recommended values. Do not confuse it with graphics memory: Rockstar lists graphics-card models and their video-memory capacities separately. A system that has 12 GB of RAM does not therefore have a 6 GB graphics card, and shared system memory should not be counted as dedicated GPU memory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If About shows a processor model different from the listed examples, note the exact model rather than deciding from its number or age alone. Rockstar’s table does not provide a conversion chart for processor families, nor does it list a score with which to rank every alternative. The careful result from that table alone is “unconfirmed,” not an assumption that a newer-sounding model necessarily matches.

Identify the graphics adapter and video memory

  1. Open Task Manager > Performance > GPU and note the adapter name and any dedicated GPU memory shown.
  2. If the information is not clear there, open Start, type dxdiag, and run the DirectX Diagnostic Tool to inspect the PC’s display information.
  3. On a laptop, note whether it has a discrete graphics adapter and record that adapter’s exact model. If more than one GPU is shown, do not assume the integrated adapter is the only one, or that the discrete adapter is automatically equivalent to a model in Rockstar’s table.

Check both the GPU model and its dedicated video memory against the published examples. Shared system memory is not the same thing as the dedicated memory figure named alongside a graphics card in the table. If Windows shows only integrated graphics, a mobile chipset, an unclear adapter name, or no dedicated-memory figure, the requirements do not give enough evidence to confidently match it to the minimum.

For a laptop with multiple adapters, write down each displayed name and identify which one is discrete if that information is available. Do not treat the presence of a discrete GPU as proof that it meets the minimum: its specific model still matters. Conversely, do not compare only the integrated adapter if the machine also lists another GPU. If the Windows tools do not make the model or memory clear, retain that uncertainty rather than filling in a likely-sounding specification.

Check free storage on the installation drive

  1. Open File Explorer > This PC.
  2. Find the drive where you intend to install the game and check its available free space.
  3. Compare that free space with the listed 150 GB requirement. Make sure you are looking at the intended installation drive, not the capacity or free space of another disk.

Rockstar’s minimum row specifies 150 GB on an HDD; the recommended row says 150 GB without naming a drive type. The table does not require an SSD. Free space is an installation check, not evidence that the processor or graphics hardware is adequate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check available space, not just the drive’s total capacity. A drive can have more than 150 GB in total and still lack 150 GB free. If you have several drives, the relevant one is the drive you plan to select for installation. The stated requirement is not a promise about how much extra space any future update may need, so use Rockstar’s current support information if the listed amount changes.

Compare every component, not just one headline spec

Use the minimum column as a complete checklist. A PC does not match the published minimum just because its processor or RAM appears sufficient: the operating system, processor, RAM, graphics, storage and sound rows all matter. Check the graphics model and video memory together, and check storage on the drive that will actually hold the installation.

  1. Make a list of your exact Windows version and edition, processor, installed RAM, graphics adapter and dedicated video memory, available space on the installation drive, and sound hardware.
  2. For each row, mark whether your PC matches a named minimum example and requirement. If a model is different or absent from the list, mark it as unconfirmed rather than assuming it is equivalent.
  3. Review the recommended column separately if you want to compare your PC with Rockstar’s stronger listed tier. A match to the minimum is not a match to the recommended requirements.
  4. Choose one of three conclusions: “matches the listed minimum,” “below at least one listed minimum,” or “cannot be confidently matched.” Keep uncertainty visible instead of turning an incomplete comparison into a yes.

A practical checklist can look like this:

  • Operating system: Does Windows match the 64-bit Windows 10 entry?
  • Processor: Is the exact CPU one of Rockstar’s named examples, or do you have a separate reliable basis for matching it?
  • Memory: Is installed system RAM at least the listed 8 GB minimum?
  • Graphics: Can you identify the exact adapter and its dedicated video memory, and confidently match it to a named minimum example?
  • Storage: Is at least 150 GB available on the intended installation drive?
  • Sound: Does the PC have a DirectX-compatible sound card?

If you cannot answer one of these questions, do not silently mark it as a pass. An unconfirmed row is different from a known shortfall: the first means the table is insufficient to classify that part, while the second means the PC does not meet that listed minimum. Both prevent a confident claim that all minimum requirements are met.

If every component matches a listed minimum, the accurate conclusion is that the PC meets Rockstar’s published minimum requirements. It is not a promise that the game will run at your preferred settings. Rockstar’s requirements table specifies no target resolution, graphics preset or frame rate, and the reviewed official information supplies no measured performance statistic for a named PC configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The same distinction applies to the recommended column. If every row matches that tier, you can say the PC matches Rockstar’s listed recommended requirements. You still cannot convert that label into a guarantee of a particular result on a specific display. Rockstar does not publish a frame-rate figure or a named graphics preset in the table, and its CPU and GPU entries should not be read as benchmark ratings.

How to interpret a mismatch or an unlisted PC part

A component falls below the minimum

If a row is clearly below the minimum—for example, the installed RAM is under 8 GB or the installation drive lacks the stated free space—the PC does not meet every listed minimum. Do not claim that it will run reliably based on the components that do match. Identify the specific shortfall first; different shortfalls call for different next steps, and the requirements table alone does not establish which upgrade would be suitable for your particular PC.

Separate a fixable storage issue from a hardware question. Freeing space or selecting another installation drive addresses the storage row; it does not change the CPU or GPU comparison. A memory or processor shortfall is a different issue, and an uncertain graphics model needs identification before you can decide whether it is actually below the minimum. Diagnose the row that failed rather than shopping for a generic “RDR2 upgrade.”

Your processor or graphics card is not named

Rockstar gives examples rather than an exhaustive catalogue of supported hardware. That means an unlisted part is not automatically incompatible, but the table does not establish that it is equivalent either. Record the exact model and treat the result as unconfirmed unless you have reliable information beyond this requirements list. In particular, do not decide based only on GPU brand, a broad family name or video-memory capacity: the listed models and memory amounts are paired examples, not a rule that any card with the same amount of memory qualifies.

Apply the same caution to CPUs. The minimum examples are Intel Core i5-2500K and AMD FX-6300; the recommended examples are Intel Core i7-4770K and AMD Ryzen 5 1500X. Rockstar’s table does not state that all processors with a similar product label or release period are interchangeable with these models. Keep the full model number in your notes and avoid treating a partial match as a confirmed result.

The PC uses integrated or mobile graphics

Rockstar specifically cautions that some mobile chipsets and integrated graphics cards may be incompatible. A laptop’s processor model and system RAM do not resolve that graphics question. Check the exact adapter and dedicated memory, if shown; if you cannot match them confidently to the published minimum, report the result as uncertain rather than promising compatibility. Rockstar also names AGP graphics cards in its warning, so do not treat an older card as supported merely because Windows identifies it.

For integrated graphics, do not count a large system-memory figure as proof that a dedicated graphics requirement is met. The distinction matters because Rockstar’s examples name discrete graphics models alongside specific video-memory capacities. The support article does not provide a separate performance tier for integrated graphics or a list of supported laptop GPUs.

The PC meets minimum but not recommended requirements

This means only that the PC has not matched every row of Rockstar’s recommended tier while it may still match the minimum tier. Rockstar does not define recommended as a specific performance target. It therefore cannot be translated into a guaranteed frame rate, resolution or preset, and a minimum-tier match cannot be described as equivalent to recommended hardware.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not combine tiers selectively to describe a machine as “recommended” if it matches some recommended examples but not others. Compare the entire column. If one row is below the recommended value and all rows meet minimum, describe the result that way: it matches the minimum tier, but not all of the recommended tier.

Hardware requirements are not the only prerequisites

Rockstar says installation and online play require a Rockstar Games account. Internet access is required for activation, online play and periodic entitlement verification. Rockstar’s support article also lists the Rockstar platform and other software components as requirements. These are account, software and connectivity prerequisites—not measurements of graphics or processor performance. Check Rockstar’s current requirements information for the precise software components and account conditions that apply before installing.

Keep these checks separate from the hardware comparison: having the account or internet access does not make an under-spec PC meet the minimum, and matching the hardware table does not by itself satisfy activation or online-play prerequisites. In other words, readiness has more than one part: hardware matching, installation space, the required platform/software, a Rockstar Games account, and internet for the stated activation and online functions.

If you are deciding whether to purchase, first use the specifications available on your PC to classify the hardware, then check the current product and account requirements through Rockstar. Rockstar’s official store lists the PC game for purchase and repeats the hardware requirements. Checking compatibility first is useful because a purchase listing alone does not answer whether your specific computer matches every requirement.

Which requirement should you trust?

Rockstar’s 2019 launch announcement used different operating-system entries: Windows 7 SP1 in its minimum row and an early Windows 10 build in its recommended row. The later Customer Support requirements article, last updated April 30, 2024, lists Windows 10 64-bit for both tiers. For a current compatibility check, use that later support table rather than carrying the launch-era operating-system wording forward.

Rockstar states in the same support article: “Over time downloadable content and programming changes will change the system requirements for this game.” Because the publisher says requirements can change, check Rockstar’s support information again close to purchase or installation; the dated table is not a guarantee that requirements will never be revised.

Decide what to do before buying or upgrading

  • All rows match the minimum: you can say the PC meets Rockstar’s listed minimum, but you still cannot infer a specific frame rate or visual setting from the table.
  • A row is below the minimum: treat the PC as not meeting the full published minimum. Identify the exact gap before considering a change.
  • A component is unlisted or unclear: treat compatibility as unconfirmed. This is especially important for integrated or mobile graphics because Rockstar explicitly warns that some may be incompatible.
  • You want a particular performance target: the requirements table cannot answer whether your PC will reach it. It contains no official FPS, resolution or preset tier.

Do not choose an upgrade from the minimum table alone. A sensible upgrade decision depends on the actual component that falls short, the rest of the PC, the display resolution and frame-rate target, compatibility with the machine, and total cost. The official requirements do not nominate a specific replacement part.

That is why an upgrade recommendation should come after diagnosis, not before it. A PC with a storage-space shortfall has a different problem from one whose GPU is unconfirmed, and neither fact establishes that replacing a particular CPU or graphics card is the right answer. Consider the whole computer, the desired performance target and the cost of making a compatible change; Rockstar’s table is a screening checklist, not a shopping list.
