If PS Remote Play will not connect, sign in, or stream smoothly, first confirm the console is ready and both devices can reach the internet. Then check PlayStation service status, test the connection at both ends, reduce network traffic, and match the next fix to the symptom. A blank screen or unavailable feature can also reflect a game or feature that Remote Play does not support—not a failed connection.

Start with the console, account, and service

Before changing router settings or reinstalling the app, rule out setup problems. Remote Play depends on the console being online, the feature being enabled, and the same PlayStation account being used on the console and the device running the app. The console also needs current system software.

Check console readiness

  • Make sure the PS5 or PS4 is connected to the internet and is either powered on or in Rest Mode.
  • Confirm Remote Play is enabled on the console and install the latest available system software.
  • Sign in to the same PlayStation account on the console and in PS Remote Play.
  • For PS4, confirm the console is activated as the primary PS4 for that account.
  • If Remote Play needs to wake the console from Rest Mode, enable “Stay Connected to the Internet” and “Enable Turning on [PS5/PS4] from Network” in the console’s power-saving settings.

If the console is off rather than in Rest Mode, network wake settings will not make it available. First test with the console powered on; once that works, confirm the Rest Mode settings if waking it remotely is the remaining problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Think of these as separate checks: enabling Remote Play allows the feature, while the network-wake options allow a console in Rest Mode to respond to a remote request. If a console works while already on but cannot be woken, focus on the Rest Mode settings and internet connection rather than changing the client app. If it cannot be reached even while powered on, continue through account, service, and network checks.

Rule out a sign-in or service outage

If the app cannot sign in, or the service appears unavailable, check PlayStation service status. If an alert is shown, wait for service to recover and try again rather than changing your network configuration. Also confirm the phone, tablet, PC, or Mac running Remote Play has ordinary internet access.

When there is no service alert, close and reopen the Remote Play app. If that does not help, restart the client device, then sign out and back in. Reinstalling the app is a later step, after confirming the console setup and internet connection.

This order helps separate a temporary sign-in or service issue from a local app problem. If other internet services also fail on the client, fix that device’s internet connection first. If internet access works and PlayStation reports no service alert, proceed to the console and app checks rather than repeatedly retrying the same sign-in.

Test the internet connection at both ends

A Remote Play stream depends on the connection from the console and the connection from the client. A fast result on one device does not establish that the other end has enough upload and download capacity. PlayStation Support states a minimum of 5 Mbps for both upload and download, and recommends at least 15 Mbps in each direction for best performance. These are guidance figures, not a guarantee of smooth play; the support pages do not state a publication date for them.

Check both directions, not just the download result. The console and client each need a usable connection, and a stream can still be interrupted by unstable service or other traffic even when a speed test reaches the stated threshold. Use the figures as a baseline for diagnosis, not as proof that the network is problem-free.

Run the console’s connection test

  1. On PS5: open Settings > Network > Connection Status > Test Internet Connection.
  2. On PS4: open Settings > Network > Test Internet Connection.
  3. On the device running Remote Play, run an internet speed test and check both upload and download results.
  4. Compare each direction at both ends with PlayStation’s 5 Mbps minimum and 15 Mbps best-performance recommendation.

A result at or above the minimum does not rule out congestion, interruptions, or other instability. If the stream improves when other household devices stop transferring data, the issue is likely competing network traffic rather than console setup.

For a useful comparison, record whether the problem happens on the console and client’s usual network, then repeat with downloads paused and other heavy network use reduced. Change one condition at a time where practical. If the stream becomes more reliable only after pausing transfers, that points toward contention. If the problem remains unchanged, continue to test the Wi-Fi or wired path and consider NAT or app-specific causes.

Reduce competition for bandwidth

  • Pause downloads on the console and client, and temporarily reduce heavy internet use on other devices.
  • If the client uses Wi-Fi, check whether other devices can connect reliably and try a 5 GHz Wi-Fi connection if available.
  • For a PC or Mac, test a wired network connection if practical. An optional Ethernet cable can help you compare wired and Wi-Fi behavior; it is a diagnostic option, not a universal fix.

When comparing Wi-Fi with Ethernet, keep the test conditions as similar as possible: use the same console and client, and check whether the problem changes when competing traffic is paused. A wired connection may help isolate a Wi-Fi problem, but the result depends on the actual network, ports, and cable reach available in your setup.

There is no need to buy new networking equipment simply because a stream stutters. First check whether a different available connection path changes the result, whether the Wi-Fi connection itself is unreliable, and whether pausing other traffic helps. A cable is useful only if you can connect the relevant PC or Mac to the network and want to make that comparison.

Check NAT and network restrictions before changing router settings

PlayStation identifies UDP port 8572 as a port used by Remote Play and warns that NAT Type 3 may prevent the service from working. If the app reports NAT Type 3 or Remote Play still fails after the basic checks, ask your internet service provider, router manufacturer, or mobile carrier whether the network’s NAT or router configuration is restricting Remote Play.

Do not assume that manually forwarding a port is a guaranteed solution. Router interfaces and network arrangements differ, and the official guidance does not provide one router-specific procedure that applies to every setup. If you are on a managed, shared, or carrier network, the provider may control settings you cannot change yourself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the port information as a reason to ask a knowledgeable provider about a restriction, not as a universal instruction to alter router settings. If you are unsure who manages the router or network, start with the ISP or the owner of the managed network. On cellular connections, ask the mobile carrier about its network conditions. A restriction on one network may explain why Remote Play works at home but fails elsewhere, or the reverse.

Fix sign-in failures and sessions that will not start

If the app cannot sign in

  1. Check PlayStation service status and wait if an alert indicates a service problem.
  2. Verify that the client device can access the internet.
  3. Close and reopen PS Remote Play, then restart the device if needed.
  4. Sign out and back in, using the same PlayStation account as the console.
  5. Recheck that Remote Play is enabled and that the console is online with current system software.
  6. If the earlier checks fail, reinstall the app.

If the app opens but cannot find or start the console

Confirm that the console is powered on or in Rest Mode, that the account and Remote Play setup are correct, and that the console has internet access. On PC or Mac, PlayStation recommends checking whether antivirus software is blocking the app. If automatic discovery fails, PC and Mac users can manually pair the console. PlayStation also recommends confirming that Remote Play connects successfully while the client is near the console before relying on a connection from outside the home.

A successful test near the console is a helpful baseline: it indicates that the console and client can establish a session in that setting. If it works nearby but not from another location, compare the networks involved and check whether NAT or provider restrictions may be relevant. If it fails nearby too, return to the console’s readiness, account, service status, and client-app checks.

Troubleshoot an unstable or poor-quality stream

If a session connects but stutters, drops, or looks poor, focus on the connection rather than repeating account setup. Test upload and download speeds at both ends, pause downloads, and compare Wi-Fi with a wired PC or Mac connection where possible. If the session is being used over mobile data, check the separate mobile-data conditions below.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a PS4 connection, PS Remote Play offers a resolution setting of 360p, 540p, or 720p. The cited PlayStation guidance excludes PS4 Pro from that resolution selector, so do not expect this particular adjustment when connected to a PS4 Pro. A lower available resolution may be worth testing when stream quality is the complaint; it does not fix a failed sign-in or a console that cannot be reached.

Match the adjustment to what is wrong. If the session starts but image quality is poor, the PS4 resolution selector may be relevant on supported PS4 connections. If the stream disconnects or stutters, prioritize the two-end connection test and reducing traffic. If no session starts at all, resolution is not the first problem to solve.

Handle PC and Mac crashes or blank screens

If the PC app crashes

  1. Restart the PC and try opening Remote Play again.
  2. If the crash continues, delete the local PS Remote Play folder in AppData, then reinstall the app.
  3. PlayStation says reinstalling the latest supported x86 Visual C++ may help.

Deleting the local app folder is different from changing the console’s Remote Play settings. Follow the app’s current platform guidance if you need help locating that folder, and avoid deleting unrelated AppData files.

Use the listed PC steps specifically for an app that crashes. If the app opens and connects but the stream is unstable, test the network instead of treating a crash remedy as a connection fix. The Visual C++ suggestion concerns the supported x86 version; do not assume that an arbitrary version or architecture is interchangeable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the PC screen is blank

  1. Restart the PC and test again.
  2. Reinstall PS Remote Play if restarting does not resolve the blank screen.
  3. Check with the graphics-card manufacturer for a current graphics driver.

If the image is absent only for one game or feature while other Remote Play content works, check compatibility before treating the symptom as a display-driver failure.

When a controller will not connect

First verify that the device and controller combination is compatible with Remote Play. Then reset the device and controller and try pairing again. If you are using a DualSense or DualSense Edge, check for current controller firmware where relevant. A controller problem is distinct from a stream connection problem: if the game image appears but input does not work, concentrate on controller compatibility and connection rather than internet speed.

Keep the symptom clear during testing: a visible, responsive stream with no controller input is different from a session that never starts. Resetting the controller and device is the recommended next check, but replacing a controller is not a general Remote Play troubleshooting step unless a separate diagnosis establishes a hardware problem.

Separate unsupported games and features from connection faults

Remote Play does not support every game or feature. Games that require PS VR, PS VR2, or PlayStation Camera are incompatible. PlayStation also lists restrictions on simultaneous use of Share Play, PS Plus Premium game streaming, Blu-ray and DVD playback, VR mode, music playback, and video services.

Use this distinction when diagnosing the symptom: if the console and other games stream normally but a particular game or feature cannot be displayed or used, the limitation may be compatibility rather than a broken stream. If all content fails, return to console readiness, service status, and network tests.

Testing another supported game or ordinary console content can help isolate the issue. If that content works through the same session, the connection is at least functioning for that test and the unsupported game or simultaneous feature becomes a more likely explanation. These restrictions are not solved by increasing speed, changing Wi-Fi bands, or reinstalling the app.

Check mobile data separately

Cellular Remote Play can fail even when the app and console work over Wi-Fi. Confirm mobile data is enabled in the Remote Play app settings, but keep in mind that carrier and network conditions can prevent cellular use. PlayStation also warns that Remote Play uses much more data than most video-streaming services, so check your mobile plan before using it away from Wi-Fi.

If cellular use fails, verify the app setting and consider whether the carrier network may be the limiting factor; a successful Wi-Fi session does not prove that mobile data will work. If it works but consumes more data than expected, review your plan and allowance before continuing to play away from Wi-Fi. Do not assume that the issue is a console fault solely because the mobile connection behaves differently.

When to contact your provider or PlayStation Support

Contact your ISP, router manufacturer, or mobile carrier when the diagnosis points to NAT or network restrictions they control—especially if the app identifies NAT Type 3 or the problem occurs only on one network. Contact PlayStation Support if the console is correctly set up, service status is clear, the client has internet access, and the app still cannot sign in or start a session. Include the console model, client device, whether the issue occurs at home or away, the exact symptom, and which checks have already changed the result.

For a provider, explain which network is affected, whether Remote Play works on another connection, and whether the app reports NAT Type 3. For PlayStation Support, describe whether the failure is sign-in, console discovery, session start, streaming quality, display, or controller input. These details help direct the question to the relevant account, app, console, or network issue without making unsupported router changes first.

Frequently Asked Questions

What internet speed does PS Remote Play need?

PlayStation Support states a minimum of 5 Mbps for both upload and download, and recommends at least 15 Mbps in each direction for best performance. Test both the console’s connection and the client device; meeting the figures does not guarantee stability if the network is congested or interrupted.

Why will PS Remote Play not connect when my console is in Rest Mode?

Check that the console is connected to the internet, Remote Play is enabled, and the relevant Rest Mode options—“Stay Connected to the Internet” and “Enable Turning on [PS5/PS4] from Network”—are enabled. If the console is fully off, network wake settings will not make it available; test while it is powered on first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What does NAT Type 3 mean for Remote Play?

PlayStation warns that NAT Type 3 may prevent Remote Play from working and identifies UDP port 8572 as used by the service. Ask your ISP, router manufacturer, or mobile carrier about restrictions. Manual port forwarding is not a guaranteed fix and depends on the network and router.

Why does Remote Play work at home but not away from home?

First confirm a successful session near the console, as PlayStation recommends. If it works nearby but not from another location, compare the networks and ask the relevant provider about NAT or network restrictions. Also verify that the console is online or in Rest Mode with network wake enabled.

Why is PS Remote Play showing a blank screen?

On PC, restart the computer, reinstall PS Remote Play if needed, and check with the graphics-card manufacturer for a current driver. If only one game or feature is blank while other content works, check whether that content is unsupported before assuming the graphics driver or stream has failed.

Why can I see the game but not control it?

Check whether the device and controller combination is compatible, then reset the device and controller and try again. For DualSense or DualSense Edge, check for current firmware where relevant. If the image is present but input is not, focus on controller compatibility and connection rather than internet speed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use PS Remote Play over mobile data?

Mobile data must be enabled in the app, but carrier and network conditions can prevent cellular use. PlayStation warns that Remote Play uses much more data than most video-streaming services, so check your mobile plan before playing away from Wi-Fi.

Which games and features are unavailable during Remote Play?

Games requiring PS VR, PS VR2, or PlayStation Camera are incompatible. PlayStation also lists restrictions on simultaneous use of Share Play, PS Plus Premium game streaming, Blu-ray or DVD playback, VR mode, music playback, and video services.

The Bottom Line

Work from the symptom outward: verify console readiness and account, check PlayStation service status, then test upload and download on both ends and reduce competing traffic. Use wired networking, NAT/provider checks, app reinstalls, or compatibility checks only where the symptom points. PlayStation Support’s figures are 5 Mbps minimum and 15 Mbps recommended in each direction, but neither speed nor a setting alone guarantees a stable session.
