How to Check Whether Your PS5 Can Run a Game at 60 FPS

The reliable answer is game-specific: open the game’s graphics, display, or video settings and look for a Performance Mode, a 60 FPS target, or a selectable frame-rate option. Then confirm the option for the exact game version from the publisher’s current information. Your PS5’s Performance Mode preset and your television’s refresh-rate label can help configure a supported game, but neither one proves that every game runs at 60 frames per second.

Use the console’s video-output menu as a separate compatibility check. It tells you what the connected HDMI display can accept, while the game menu tells you what the software is designed to render. Keeping those two checks separate prevents the most common 60 FPS misunderstandings.

What 60 FPS means on PS5

Frame rate is the number of images a game renders each second. A 60 FPS target means the game is designed to present up to 60 frames per second in that mode, producing noticeably smoother motion than a 30 FPS target when the game and display can deliver it.

There is no single PS5 switch that forces every title to 60 FPS. Frame-rate modes are created by each game’s developer, and labels, targets, resolution choices, and availability vary by title. The same game can offer several modes, while another may offer no selectable frame-rate mode at all. That is why the game’s own menu and official information are the direct evidence you need.

PowerA Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable for PlayStation 5, Cable, HDMI 2.1, PS5, Officially Licensed
  • Reliable high-performance Ultra High-Speed HDMI Cable
  • 10-foot (3 meter) length and included cable tie for ultimate setup flexibility
  • Uninterrupted speed and maximum visual performance
  • Transmits 4K resolution at 120 Hz and 8k resolution at 60 Hz as specified in HDMI 2.1
  • Supports up to 48 Gbps bandwidth

Step 1: Check the game’s graphics or display menu

Start inside the game rather than in the PS5 system settings. Pause the game or return to its main menu, then open a section named Graphics, Display, Video, Visuals, or something similar. Look for one of these indicators:

  • Performance Mode or High Frame Rate, with a stated 60 FPS target.
  • A direct Frame Rate selector that includes 60 FPS.
  • A description such as “targets 60 FPS,” “prioritizes frame rate,” or “smooth motion.”
  • A mode offering 120 FPS, which is a higher target than 60 FPS but requires compatible output equipment.

Read the full description instead of assuming that the word “performance” automatically means 60 FPS. Some games use Performance Mode for a target other than 60 FPS, and some expose a 120 FPS option alongside a 60 FPS option. The exact wording and available choices belong to the individual title.

Record the active mode, not just the available modes

If the game lets you choose between modes, note which one is currently selected. A game can remember a preference from a previous session, and changing the system preset does not necessarily change a title that uses its own saved setting. If you want to test 60 FPS, select the mode that explicitly identifies a 60 FPS target, apply the change if prompted, and return to gameplay.

Check the exact game and version

Use the title’s current in-game information or official support material for the version installed on your console. Patches can change performance behavior, add a mode, remove a mode, or alter the wording shown in the menu. A statement about one edition, platform build, or earlier patch should not be treated as proof for a different version.

Step 2: Understand the PS5 Performance Mode preset

PS5 has a system-wide preference that can tell supported games which type of mode to prefer:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Choose Saved Data and Game/App Settings.
  3. Open Game Presets.
  4. Select Performance Mode or Resolution Mode.
  5. Choose Performance Mode if you want supported games to favor smoother motion, or choose Resolution Mode if you prefer higher graphic quality.

PlayStation describes the choice this way: “Make motion in your game smoother with performance mode, or have higher graphic quality in resolution mode.” The preset is a preference, not a universal frame-rate command. It applies only when a game offers compatible modes, and it cannot create a 60 FPS option in a title that does not provide one.

After setting the preference, still open the game’s own graphics menu. Some games expose their own selector, use different names, or do not honor the system preference. The in-game selection and its stated target remain the useful evidence for that title.

Step 3: Check your screen and video output separately

The PS5 can report what the connected HDMI device supports, but this check answers a different question from the game’s frame-rate target.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Choose Screen and Video.
  3. Open Video Output.
  4. Review the information shown for the connected HDMI device and the available output options.
  5. Use 120 Hz Output when you have a compatible television or monitor and a game that supports a 120 Hz mode.

A display’s 120 Hz capability means it can accept a signal refreshing at up to 120 times per second under the supported resolution and connection conditions. It does not tell you that a particular game renders at 60 FPS. A game may render at 30, 60, or 120 FPS regardless of the label on the television, subject to the title’s own implementation and the output settings.

Why 120 Hz appears in a 60 FPS check

Sixty-FPS play does not require a 120 Hz display; a compatible 60 Hz display can show a 60 FPS signal. The 120 Hz setting matters when a game offers a higher-refresh-rate mode, and it is also a useful compatibility check for players who may use those modes later. Do not turn on 120 Hz expecting it to raise a game’s frame rate by itself. The game must offer the mode, the console must output it, and the display must accept it.

How to compare modes when a game offers more than one

When several choices are available, compare three things: the stated frame-rate target, the visual-quality or resolution trade-off, and any display requirement. This keeps the decision tied to what the game actually documents.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Mode or setting What it generally prioritizes What establishes the frame rate Display consideration
Performance Mode Smoother motion The game’s own description; it may state 60 FPS, 120 FPS, or another target Use the display settings required by that title and target
Resolution Mode Higher graphic quality The game’s own description; a resolution-focused mode is not automatically 30 or 60 FPS Check the resolution and refresh-rate support shown in Video Output
Explicit 60 FPS option A stated 60-frame-per-second target The in-game frame-rate label or official game-specific information A compatible 60 Hz display is sufficient for a 60 FPS signal
Explicit 120 FPS option A higher frame-rate target The in-game 120 FPS or equivalent label Requires a compatible 120 Hz display and supported output path

The table describes how to interpret labels, not a list of modes that every game includes. A title can combine these choices differently or provide only one of them.

Official examples of different targets

PlayStation’s examples show why the title’s wording matters. In its discussion of PS5-enhanced games, DOOM Eternal is shown with modes that target 60 FPS and another that targets 120 FPS. Rainbow Six Siege is shown with a 120 FPS Performance Mode and a 60 FPS Resolution Mode. Those examples demonstrate that “performance” and “resolution” are not fixed frame-rate numbers across all games: one title’s Performance Mode can target 120 FPS, while another mode in the same title can target 60 FPS.

Use the official examples as a way to read your own game’s menu, not as a prediction for an unrelated title. The relevant question is always what the installed game says beside its active mode.

Things that do not prove a game runs at 60 FPS

  • The PS5 name alone: The console has the capability to support games with different targets, but capability is not a promise made by every title.
  • A Performance Mode label without a number: “Performance” signals a priority for smoother motion, not necessarily a fixed 60 FPS target.
  • Your television’s refresh-rate badge: A 60 Hz or 120 Hz screen describes the display’s refresh capability, not the game’s rendering choice.
  • The 120 Hz Output setting: This enables compatible 120 Hz output; it does not force a game to render at 60 or 120 FPS.
  • An HDMI cable by itself: A cable can affect whether a supported signal reaches the display, but it cannot add a frame-rate mode that the game does not provide.
  • A system preset set to Performance Mode: The preset only expresses your preference to supported games and cannot establish a particular title’s actual target.

If the game has no 60 FPS option

If you cannot find a 60 FPS label, work through the following checks before drawing a conclusion:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Search every graphics, display, video, and gameplay settings page. Developers do not use one universal menu name.
  2. Look for a performance-versus-resolution selector rather than a number. Open each mode’s description; the target may be written in a tooltip or explanatory line.
  3. Confirm that the game is fully updated and check the title’s current official information. A patch can change available modes or performance behavior.
  4. Verify the exact game and version you intended to run. Information for a different edition or platform build may not apply.
  5. Check whether the game requires a compatible display setting for the option to appear. A higher-refresh-rate mode can remain hidden or unavailable when the output chain does not meet its requirements.
  6. If the official game information does not state a 60 FPS mode, do not infer one from the console’s preset, the display’s refresh rate, or the HDMI connection. Treat the target as unconfirmed rather than guaranteed.

When the option exists but play does not look smooth

First confirm that the 60 FPS mode is still selected after restarting the game. Then review Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output and make sure the connected display is detected as expected. If the mode depends on 120 Hz output, verify that the display and connection support it and that 120 Hz Output is enabled. Finally, check the game’s current version and official notes, because later patches can change how a mode behaves.

These checks distinguish a missing game feature from an output-compatibility problem. They do not turn a title without a documented 60 FPS mode into one that has it.

HDMI cable and connection requirements

PlayStation recommends using the HDMI 2.1 cable included with the PS5 for the console’s high-performance features and notes that 4K 120 Hz video output requires a compatible screen. If the original cable is missing or damaged, replace it with a cable suitable for the output mode you are trying to use and connect the console directly to the compatible display or an equipment path that supports the same signal.

A replacement cable is a setup requirement, not a frame-rate upgrade. It can help carry a signal the PS5 and game already support, but it cannot make a 30 FPS title run at 60 FPS or unlock a mode absent from the game’s software.

A quick decision checklist

Use this order whenever you want to answer “Can my PS5 run this game at 60 FPS?”

  1. Open the game: Find its Graphics, Display, Video, or Visuals menu.
  2. Find the target: Look for an explicit 60 FPS statement or a frame-rate selector that includes 60 FPS.
  3. Identify the active choice: Make sure the 60 FPS mode, rather than a resolution-focused mode, is selected.
  4. Confirm the version: Check current official information for the exact game and installed edition; patches can change modes.
  5. Set the preference if useful: Choose Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Game Presets > Performance Mode or Resolution Mode > Performance Mode to prefer smoother motion in games that support the preset.
  6. Check the output: Open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output and verify the display and any required 120 Hz setting.
  7. Check the connection: Use the included HDMI 2.1 cable or an appropriate replacement when the selected output mode requires it.
  8. Do not overclaim: If the game never documents a 60 FPS target, the PS5, television, preset, and cable cannot prove that it runs at 60 FPS.
