James Bond is not simply owned by Amazon. Since a joint venture closed on March 24, 2025, Amazon MGM Studios, Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson are co-owners of the Bond intellectual property, while Amazon MGM has creative control over the franchise. Amazon’s film-distribution position came earlier, through its 2022 acquisition of MGM.
The publishing and screen businesses remain separate. Ian Fleming Publications (IFPL) administers literary copyright in the Bond novels and short stories and licenses literary uses of the Bond name. Amazon MGM handles the film side, including film-related merchandise. That split determines who can authorize a new comic, who can approve a movie, and why an old description of Bond ownership may now be out of date.

The current ownership answer
The most accurate short description is co-ownership with Amazon MGM creative control. The joint venture between Amazon MGM Studios, Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson closed on March 24, 2025. Its terms left the three parties as co-owners of the James Bond intellectual property and gave Amazon MGM responsibility for creative control going forward. Amazon’s announcement describes Wilson and Broccoli as entrusting Amazon MGM to lead Bond into the future: Wilson said, “Therefore, Barbara and I agree, it is time for our trusted partner, Amazon MGM Studios, to lead James Bond into the future.” Broccoli said that, after No Time to Die and Wilson’s retirement from the films, she wanted to focus on other projects. Amazon’s February 20, 2025 announcement records both statements and the closing date.
Those are two different ideas. Ownership describes who holds the underlying intellectual property. Creative control describes who leads decisions about new screen stories and the franchise’s direction. Saying only that Amazon owns Bond erases Broccoli and Wilson’s continuing co-ownership; saying only that the Broccolis own Bond ignores Amazon MGM’s contractual creative role.

The separation is set out by IFPL in its sales, marketing, rights and licensing information. Its explanation is why a publisher seeking permission for a novel or comic should not assume that a film-rights contact can grant literary permission, or vice versa.
Why the 2022 and 2025 descriptions differ
The European Commission’s 2022 merger decision describes the arrangement that existed before the new joint venture. In that account, MGM and Danjaq/Eon co-owned the Bond franchise, while Danjaq/Eon held broad approval rights connected with the franchise. That document remains useful history, but it is not a current statement of approval rights because it predates the March 2025 transaction. You can read the dated account in the European Commission’s M.10349 decision.
When an article or social-media post quotes the older MGM–Danjaq/Eon structure without mentioning 2025, check its date. The old description can explain how the franchise operated before the joint venture; it cannot by itself establish who controls a project today.

How the split affects new comics and books
Permission is required for Bond literary works
IFPL’s FAQ says that Bond novels and short stories may be published only under licence from IFPL. It also says unsolicited story submissions are not accepted. A creator cannot turn an original spy story into an official Bond novel or comic merely by using the character, title conventions or Fleming’s fictional setting. Official publication requires the appropriate rights agreement.
For a prospective writer or publisher, the practical first step is to approach IFPL about literary rights rather than treating Amazon MGM’s film announcement as an invitation to submit a script or comic pitch. IFPL’s public guidance identifies the literary route; it does not publish a universal contract, royalty schedule or approval timetable.
What the authorized comic catalogue shows
IFPL’s James Bond Library documents several licensed formats. They demonstrate that Bond publishing is an active, multi-format program, not that every comic is controlled through the film-production office.

The public library pages do not state the specific license terms, approval workflow or licensee for each listed work. The safe conclusion is narrower: each official work belongs to a licensed publishing ecosystem administered on the literary side, but the existence of a comic does not reveal the private contract behind it.

An original graphic novel creates a new Bond adventure under licence. A graphic adaptation of Casino Royale or Live and Let Die uses a pre-existing Fleming novel as its source. Both still require permission, but they involve different creative tasks and potentially different contractual considerations. Newspaper-strip collections add another historical format with its own publication history. None should be assumed to be a film tie-in simply because the character is visually familiar from cinema.
How the arrangement shapes film adaptations
Amazon MGM’s present creative role
Amazon MGM’s control is visible in its announced leadership for the next Bond film. The studio announced Denis Villeneuve as director, with Amy Pascal and David Heyman producing, in its statement on the next film. That announcement confirms who is attached to lead the project’s development; it does not confirm casting, plot, release date, production schedule or a streaming window.

Creative control also does not mean that every future Bond-related work automatically belongs to the film unit. A film adaptation, film merchandise program or exhibition is a film-side matter. A novel or literary comic remains subject to the literary licensing structure described by IFPL. The two tracks can influence one another culturally, but the public rights descriptions do not say that the 2025 joint venture rewrote existing comic licences.
What remains unannounced
- No public announcement cited here establishes the next film’s cast.
- No cited announcement establishes its story, release date or distribution window.
- The sources do not announce additional television, game or comic adaptations tied to Villeneuve’s film.
- The sources do not publish the internal approval mechanics between Amazon MGM and its co-owners.
Keeping those limits visible prevents a confirmed director announcement from being misreported as a complete production plan.

- Classify the project by medium. A novel, short story or literary graphic novel belongs on the IFPL rights track. A film, film-related product, exhibition or screen adaptation belongs on the Amazon MGM track.
- Use the correct rights contact. IFPL’s rights page directs literary queries to IFPL and film-side queries to Amazon MGM. Do not send an unsolicited story submission; IFPL says it does not accept those.
- Describe the source material precisely. State whether the work is an original Bond story, an adaptation of a Fleming novel, or a collection of previously published strip material. Those categories appear separately in the official library.
- Ask for written scope. A licence should specify the characters and text covered, territory, language, format, term, edition and approval obligations. The public sources do not provide standard terms, so those details must be confirmed directly with the rights holder.
- Do not infer film approval from a book licence. A literary licence does not, on the information publicly available, grant permission to use film likenesses, film footage, film music or other screen-specific material.
How to read common ownership claims
Does Amazon own James Bond?
That wording is incomplete. Amazon MGM is a co-owner with Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson and has creative control after the March 2025 closing. It also holds film-distribution rights that Amazon says came with the 2022 MGM acquisition.

Do the Broccolis still control every Bond decision?
Barbara Broccoli remains a co-owner, as does Michael G. Wilson, but the 2025 arrangement gives Amazon MGM creative control. The precise internal approvals for individual projects are not published in the cited announcements.
Can Amazon MGM authorize any Bond comic?
Not on the evidence publicly described. IFPL administers literary copyright and licenses literary use of the Bond brand. A comic publisher should seek the appropriate literary licence rather than assume that film-side control covers books.
Does an old article about Danjaq/Eon prove the current rules?
No. The European Commission account is dated 2022 and describes the pre-joint-venture structure. It should be labelled historical when used today.

For readers of comics, books and screen adaptations, the key is to identify which rights are being discussed. A newly announced film director is evidence of Amazon MGM’s current creative role. A comic listed in the official library is evidence of licensed literary publishing. Neither item, by itself, proves that the other side of the business has changed.
The arrangement also explains why Bond can appear in several forms at once: literary copyright and licensing can support original graphic novels, Fleming adaptations and newspaper-strip collections, while Amazon MGM develops the next film under its creative-control mandate. Co-ownership, distribution, literary administration and brand licensing are connected parts of one franchise, but they are not interchangeable rights.
