On your PS5, open Settings > System > System Software > Console Information. The screen shows your installed system software version; Sony’s Up to date status beneath it means the latest version is installed.
Check the installed version and status
- From the PS5 home screen, open Settings.
- Go to System > System Software > Console Information.
- Read the system software version and the status shown beneath it. If it says Up to date, Sony identifies the installed software as the latest version. Sony’s instructions for checking your PS5 system software explain this status.
Menu wording can vary slightly by locale. This screen checks the installed version and its status; it is separate from the menu used to check for and install an available update.
Check for and install an available update
- Return to Settings > System > System Software.
- Open System Software Update and Settings.
- If Update Available appears, select Update System Software to proceed. Sony says this notice appears when a newer version is available: PlayStation Support: Update PS5 system software.
The installed version number can change as Sony releases updates, so use the status shown on your console rather than relying on a version number in an older guide.
If a system software update fails
Retry a stuck download
Open Downloads/Uploads, highlight the system software update, open View Error Info, then choose Try Again. If the PS5 can reach its home screen but an update has failed, Sony also lists connecting the console to your router with a LAN cable and retrying as an option. Use Safe Mode or update from USB
If the console cannot reach the home screen, Sony’s Safe Mode guidance says to turn the console off, then hold the power button until the second beep and select Update System Software. If that does not work, Sony documents updating from a computer using a USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT. The drive needs a folder named PS5, a subfolder named UPDATE, and Sony’s update file saved inside as PS5UPDATE.PUP. Start Safe Mode and select Update from USB Storage Device. Protect your console and data
- Use only update files from Sony; Sony warns against unofficial update data.
- Do not turn off the console during installation. Sony also advises against installing system software directly before or after a power outage.
- Updating and reinstalling are different procedures. Sony warns that reinstalling system software deletes all data on the console.
