How to Check Whether Your TV Supports the Features PS5 Pro Uses

Use your TV’s exact model and HDMI port documentation, then check PS5 Video Output to see which resolution, VRR and HDR capabilities the console detects.

Check your TV’s exact model and the specific HDMI port you plan to use, then confirm the connection in Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output on PS5 Pro. Verify 4K at 120 Hz, VRR, HDR, and ALLM separately: an “HDMI 2.1” label alone does not guarantee every feature, and a TV may support a feature on only some of its ports.

What to check before you connect PS5 Pro

TV compatibility is not a single yes-or-no question. The useful answer is a list of which signals your TV accepts, which HDMI input accepts each one, and what the console detects after connection. A television might support 4K at 120 Hz on one input but not another, or list some gaming features without supporting all of them on every port.

Start with the capability you actually want. If you want a high-refresh-rate signal, find out whether the TV accepts 120 Hz at the resolution you plan to use. If you want variable refresh rate, check VRR separately. Look up HDR and ALLM individually, too. Finally, confirm that the game and its selected mode use the feature; the TV accepting a signal does not make every game output it.

The PS5 Pro features most relevant to this check are 4K output and PSSR, compatible-game support for output up to 120 fps, VRR, HDR, and ALLM. 8K is a conditional extra rather than a baseline requirement for using the console.

Find your TV’s exact model and the right HDMI input

Identify the complete model number

Read the model identifier from the label on the back of the TV, or look for it in the television’s system information or settings menu. Use the complete identifier when you consult the manufacturer’s official specifications or manual. A series name or broad marketing page may cover multiple models, and their ports or capabilities may differ.

Do not begin with a search for a feature in a general product description and assume the result applies to your set. Match the full model number, then check the specifications or manual for the model and, where given, its regional version. The aim is to establish what the actual television supports rather than what a related model in the same family supports.

Check port-specific capabilities

Use the manual or official specifications to identify which HDMI input supports each feature you want. Some TVs do not provide the same capabilities on every HDMI input. Sony advises using an HDMI 2.1-compatible port for relevant high-bandwidth features and checking the TV manual to locate the appropriate input. Certain TV settings may also need to be changed.

Write down the port designation from the TV and its manual before connecting the console. If you are comparing two ports or two TVs, compare their documented features rather than relying on which port looks newest or has the most prominent label. A port’s designation does not replace checking its stated resolution, refresh rate, and gaming features.

Check each PS5 Pro feature separately

Feature What to look for in the TV documentation What it does not prove
4K at 120 Hz Support for a 120 Hz input at 4K on the HDMI port you will use. It does not mean every game runs at 120 fps; the game and its mode must support that output.
VRR Explicit support for variable refresh rate on the intended TV input. It does not guarantee identical results in every game or on every TV.
HDR HDR support in the TV specifications, together with the console’s detected-device information. It does not establish that every game uses HDR.
ALLM Explicit support for Auto Low Latency Mode, or the relevant low-latency or Game Mode behavior, in the manual. An HDMI 2.1 label alone does not establish ALLM support.
8K The display requirements, including 8K at 60 Hz with DSC, plus a supported game and eligible console model group. An 8K label on a TV alone does not establish that PS5 Pro can output 8K in a particular setup.

4K, PSSR, and 120 Hz

PSSR is PS5 Pro’s console-side upscaling feature. Sony promotes it as a way to improve image clarity on a 4K TV; it is not a special television input mode that you need to find under the name “PSSR.” For the TV check, focus on the supported resolution and input signal.

Sony describes PS5 Pro support for 60 Hz and 120 Hz displays and compatible games with output up to 120 fps. To receive a 120 Hz signal, the television and the HDMI input in use must accept 120 Hz at the relevant resolution. The game must also support the desired output or mode. A TV that accepts 120 Hz does not make a game capable of 120 fps, and “up to 120 fps” is not a promise that every title runs at that frame rate.

VRR

VRR, or variable refresh rate, synchronizes a compatible display’s refresh rate with the console’s output. Sony describes it as a feature for compatible HDMI 2.1 VRR TVs and monitors, and notes that results vary by TV and game. Check for VRR explicitly in the TV manual or official specifications, then confirm what the connected-device screen reports on PS5.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not infer VRR support just because a TV supports 120 Hz or carries an HDMI 2.1 label. Those are separate checks. Likewise, a VRR-capable TV does not mean every game takes advantage of the feature.

HDR

Look for HDR in the specifications for your exact TV model and, if the manual identifies port-specific support, verify it for the input you will use. After connecting PS5 Pro, check the HDR information and options under Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. The console’s report is a useful confirmation of the connected device, while the TV manual helps you understand what the set and input are specified to accept.

ALLM

ALLM means Auto Low Latency Mode. It lets a compatible TV use a low-latency mode for supported use. Sony says it works only with compatible TVs, may also be called Game Mode in TV settings, and should be checked in the TV manual. Sony’s guidance is explicit: “Do all TVs with HDMI 2.1 have ALLM? No, please check the instruction manual that came with the display device to check if it supports ALLM.”

Therefore, do not treat HDMI 2.1 as shorthand for ALLM. Look for ALLM or the relevant low-latency behavior in the manual and check any TV setting the manufacturer says is required. If the manual does not establish support, do not assume the feature is present based on another HDMI capability.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8K is an optional, conditional check

8K is not a minimum requirement for PS5 Pro. Sony says only select games support 8K. Its PS5 video-output guidance specifies an 8K/60 Hz display with DSC, and limits the Allow 8K Output setting to the CFI-7000 model group. Check the display, game, and console model prerequisites together; an 8K-capable television by itself is not enough.

Confirm what PS5 Pro detects

  1. Connect PS5 Pro to the documented input. Use the HDMI port the TV manual identifies for the capabilities you want to check.
  2. Update the TV firmware. Sony includes firmware as one of the checks when a 4K/120 Hz signal is missing.
  3. Open the console’s video-output screen. On PS5, go to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output.
  4. Review the connected-device information. The screen reports information about the connected HDMI device, including resolution, VRR, and HDR. Sony says PS5 detects the TV’s capabilities and automatically selects the best available resolution.
  5. Compare the report with the manual. If the detected information does not match what you expected, check the exact TV model, HDMI port, firmware, connection path, and relevant output settings before deciding the TV lacks the feature.

The console’s screen is a practical connection check, not a substitute for the model documentation. The manual helps establish what the TV and particular port are designed to support; the PS5 screen tells you information about the device it currently detects. Use both pieces of evidence when a feature is absent or a signal falls short of expectations.

Which HDMI port should you use?

Use the input that the exact TV manual identifies for the desired signal or feature. If you want 4K/120 Hz, consult the port information for that resolution and refresh rate. If you also need VRR, HDR, or ALLM, verify those independently for the same input where the documentation provides port-level details.

When a TV has several HDMI inputs, do not assume they are interchangeable for gaming features. Nor should you assume that plugging into a port labeled HDMI 2.1 proves support for every PS5 Pro feature. Sony specifically warns that HDMI 2.1 TVs do not all support ALLM, and directs owners to check the display manual.

If an audio receiver or other device sits between the console and TV, connect PS5 Pro directly to the TV while diagnosing a missing high-bandwidth signal. That removes an intermediary as a possible limitation in the current signal path. Once the direct connection works, you can check the other device’s documented capabilities before putting it back in the chain.

Fix a missing 4K/120 Hz signal

If PS5 Pro is not outputting 4K at 120 Hz as expected, work through the whole connection instead of immediately blaming the television. Sony’s troubleshooting guidance calls out the display’s 4K/120 Hz capability, TV firmware, cable, HDMI port, connection path, and PS5 output settings.

  1. Verify the TV specification. Confirm that the exact model supports a 4K/120 Hz input, not merely 4K resolution or a 120 Hz panel specification. Check the HDMI port you are using.
  2. Update the TV firmware. Install available TV firmware updates, then reconnect and check the output again.
  3. Check the HDMI cable. Sony recommends the HDMI cable included with PS5. If it is missing, damaged, or the signal path is suspect, use a rated Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. A cable cannot add a capability the TV’s HDMI input does not support.
  4. Connect directly to the television for diagnosis. Temporarily remove a receiver or other intermediary from the connection. If the signal changes, investigate the documented capabilities of that device and the remaining cable path.
  5. Use the appropriate TV input. Move the console to the HDMI port the TV manual identifies for the desired high-bandwidth signal, and check whether the manual calls for a TV setting change.
  6. Review PS5 output settings. Check the console’s resolution and video transfer-rate settings, then revisit Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output to see what the connected device reports.

Change one part of the setup at a time where practical. That makes it easier to see whether the issue was the port, a setting, firmware, cable, or an intermediary instead of changing several things without knowing which one mattered.

How to compare two TVs or ports

If you already have more than one possible display or input, compare them against the signal you care about rather than selecting by brand, screen size, or a single HDMI label. Use the official manual or specifications for each exact model and input. The strongest match is the option that documents the desired capabilities on the actual port available for PS5 Pro.

Comparison question Evidence to record for each TV or port
Can it accept high-refresh-rate 4K? Whether the specific HDMI input supports 4K at 120 Hz.
Can it synchronize refresh with the console? Whether VRR is explicitly supported for the display/input.
Does it support HDR? The TV’s stated HDR support and what PS5 reports after connection.
Can it switch to low-latency behavior? Whether the manual specifies ALLM or the relevant low-latency mode.
Could the signal path be limiting the result? Whether a receiver or other intermediary is present, and whether the cable and console settings are appropriate.

If one option supports 4K/120 Hz but not a feature you value, while another supports that feature on a different input, decide based on your priorities and the documented combination available on the port you will use. Avoid treating a long list of labels as proof that all capabilities operate together on every input.

What a TV compatibility check can—and cannot—tell you

A well-documented TV and a successful PS5 connection establish which display signals are available to the console. They do not establish what a particular game will output. Game support and the selected game mode affect actual output: a compatible 120 Hz display is necessary for a 120 Hz signal, but the title must also support the corresponding mode.

Keep the checks distinct: the TV’s specifications describe the display and port; PS5’s Video Output screen reports information about the connected HDMI device; the game determines which supported modes it can use. This separation prevents a common misdiagnosis, such as blaming the TV when the title does not offer a high-frame-rate mode, or assuming the console can use a feature merely because the TV advertises a related HDMI capability.
