A PS5 fan getting louder during some games can be normal; a high-temperature warning is not. If you see that warning, turn the console off and let it cool. If the problem is stuttering without a heat warning, treat it as a performance or game issue to diagnose—not proof that the console is overheating. Start by checking placement and airflow, then follow the steps for the symptom you actually have.
What the symptom tells you
| Symptom | What it establishes |
|---|---|
| The fan gets louder during some games or apps, but there is no warning or shutdown | Sony says the fan may temporarily run faster to cool the system. Noise alone does not establish a fault. |
| An on-screen high-temperature warning appears | The console is reporting that it is too hot. This calls for shutdown and cooling, not continued play. |
| A game stutters or performance drops without a heat warning | The cause is not established by stuttering alone. Software, a single game, or a broader console issue may need to be investigated. |
| The console loses power, shuts off, or multiple games keep freezing or crashing | A persistent or multi-game problem warrants Sony’s support and repair diagnostics. |
Sony’s PS5 noise guidance says temporary faster fan operation during some games and applications is normal. The same guidance treats blocked vents, cramped placement, and accumulated dust as things to check. A fan that becomes audible is not, by itself, evidence of overheating; an on-screen temperature alert is a distinct and more serious signal.

The CFI-21XX PS5 instruction manual states that a notification appears if the console becomes too hot and warns that continued use while it is displayed may make the console non-operational. That is model-specific manual guidance; owners should consult the manual for their own model if they need model-specific safety details. Sony’s general response to the alert is clear: turn the console off, allow it to cool, and address ventilation before using it again.

More than one symptom can occur at once, but one does not automatically explain another. For example, loud fan noise during a game does not prove that the game is stuttering because of heat. Likewise, a stutter without a warning does not show that the console has overheated. Choose the relevant troubleshooting path instead of treating every performance change as a thermal problem.

Improve placement and airflow first
Look at where the console sits while you play, not just where it is stored. A cabinet that traps heat, objects close to the vents, or a long-fibre carpet beneath the console can all conflict with Sony’s placement guidance. The console needs open space for air to move around it.
- Leave at least 10 cm of free space around the console, as Sony specifies. This is ventilation guidance, not a tested threshold that guarantees a particular temperature or performance level.
- Make sure the side and rear vents are not blocked by a wall, furniture, other equipment, or stored objects.
- Avoid cramped spaces and long-fibre carpet. If the console is in an enclosed cabinet, move it to a better-ventilated location rather than assuming that a louder fan is a setting you can switch off.
- Check for dust accumulated around the vents. Do not infer a precise cleaning interval from Sony’s guidance; inspect the console and clean if dust has built up.
Sony does not give a specific room-temperature target in the cited noise guidance, so there is no supported temperature number to use as a pass/fail test. The practical check is whether the console has clear vents, the specified clearance, and a well-ventilated location away from high temperatures.
Do the placement check while considering the actual play setup. A console may have more open space when stored than when it is pushed into a cabinet for a gaming session. Look for objects that have shifted close to its sides or rear, equipment stacked nearby, or a door that leaves the space cramped. If you find a restriction, change the position rather than trying to compensate with an accessory or a fan setting. Sony’s guidance identifies airflow and unobstructed vents as the first things to address.
The 10 cm figure is a minimum clearance recommendation, not a guarantee that every placement with exactly that gap is ideal. A location can still be cramped or poorly ventilated even if one side has that much space. Check the whole area around the console and ensure air vents remain unobstructed. Conversely, do not use a particular room reading as the sole test: Sony’s noise page does not specify a room-temperature cutoff.
Clean the vents safely
For external dust around and in the air vents, Sony recommends a low-powered vacuum. Disconnect AC power before cleaning; do not clean around a powered console. This is an external cleaning step, not an instruction to open the console or service internal parts.
- Turn the console off and disconnect the AC cable from the rear of the console.
- Inspect the air vents for visible dust or obstruction.
- Use a low-powered vacuum to remove dust accumulated in and around the vents, following Sony’s cleaning guidance.
- Put the console back in a well-ventilated position with the required clearance before reconnecting and using it.
Do not treat compressed air, aftermarket cooling accessories, replacement thermal material, or internal disassembly as Sony-recommended routine fixes: the cited support guidance does not recommend them. If noise remains concerning after checking placement and cleaning the documented external area, Sony’s noise support page advises contacting PlayStation Support when its steps have not resolved the issue.

Keep the cleaning task limited to the area Sony describes: dust in and around the vents. Do not turn this into a teardown or attempt internal maintenance based only on fan noise. If the console remains unusually noisy after you have checked its location and removed external dust safely, use the official support route rather than guessing at an internal fault. Sony does not endorse a particular vacuum model; the relevant specification is that it be low-powered.
What to do when the PS5 displays a high-temperature warning
Stop the session rather than waiting to see whether the warning disappears while a game continues running. Sony’s safety manual warns that continued use while the message is displayed may lead to the console becoming non-operational. The specified response is to turn the console off and allow it to cool.
- Turn off the PS5 when the high-temperature message appears.
- Leave it off until it has cooled; do not continue playing while the warning remains on-screen.
- Move it to a well-ventilated location away from high temperatures and check that the vents are unobstructed.
- If an M.2 SSD is installed, check that its heat-dissipation parts have not detached. The instruction applies to the installed SSD’s cooling parts; do not assume every console has an added M.2 drive.
- After these checks, if the alert continues to appear or the console shuts off, use Sony’s regional support or repair route rather than repeatedly restarting into the same warning.
The warning and M.2 guidance are in Sony’s CFI-21XX instruction manual, under Health and Safety. The manual says, “If the console becomes too hot, you will see a notification message on your screen,” and warns, “Continued use while the message displays may lead to the console becoming non-operational.” These are statements from Sony’s manual, not a diagnosis of why a particular console overheated.
The key distinction is that a warning changes the priority: stop playing and respond to the alert first. Do not run another demanding game to test whether the message returns, and do not treat the warning as equivalent to ordinary fan noise. Once the console has cooled, review placement and vents before returning it to service. If an M.2 SSD is fitted, the manual specifically calls out checking that its heat-dissipation parts have not come loose. If the warning recurs despite these checks, or the console powers off, get support rather than repeatedly restarting it.
Diagnose stuttering or performance drops separately
Stuttering during a demanding game can be frustrating, but it does not prove that heat is the cause. If there is no temperature alert or shutdown, begin with the game’s and console’s software state, and determine whether the symptom is limited to one title or appears across several.

If one game is affected
- Check for updates to the game and the PS5 system software.
- Use Sony’s game-specific troubleshooting for a game that freezes or crashes, choosing the relevant steps for a disc or digital copy.
- If the issue is online-only, compare it with other online games and services. That can help distinguish a game or console symptom from a connection-related one.
- If only one title continues to fail after the applicable checks, the game publisher may know about a title-specific issue.
Sony’s game freeze or crash guidance distinguishes problems affecting one game from those affecting multiple games. It does not establish that ordinary stuttering has a thermal cause, nor does it promise a specific frame-rate improvement from troubleshooting.

Start by narrowing down what “stuttering” means in your case: does the game visibly pause or freeze, does performance drop in one title only, or does the game fail entirely? Sony’s game-specific page addresses freezes and crashes; it does not say that every momentary performance dip has the same cause. Check the relevant game and system updates, then follow the support steps for the version you use—disc or digital—if the game freezes or crashes.
If the problem happens only while playing online, compare with another online game and other services. A difference between one online title and other online activity can help you decide whether to follow a game-specific path or investigate a broader console symptom. This comparison is a way to isolate the issue, not proof by itself of a network fault. If one game alone keeps failing after the applicable checks, the publisher may be aware of a title-specific issue.
If performance drops more broadly
Sony’s Safe Mode documentation includes system options for performance drops and system feature issues. The relevant options are Clear System Software Cache and Rebuild Database. These are diagnostic or system-maintenance options, not guaranteed fixes for overheating or stuttering.
- Clear System Software Cache: Sony lists this option for system feature issues or performance drops.
- Rebuild Database: Sony says this scans the drive and creates a new database. Its guidance identifies it as useful for system feature issues or when an icon for a deleted game remains on Home.
Read Sony’s Safe Mode instructions before choosing an option, and follow the on-screen process. Do not select a more destructive option on the assumption that it is a routine way to improve performance; the cited cache and database guidance does not claim to cure thermal throttling or guarantee higher frame rates.
These options have different descriptions, so do not treat them as interchangeable promises. Sony describes clearing the system software cache as an option for system feature issues or performance drops. Rebuild Database scans the drive and creates a new database; Sony also names system feature issues and a deleted game’s lingering Home icon as situations where it can be useful. Consult the current instructions before entering Safe Mode and select only the option that fits Sony’s description. The documented purpose does not include guaranteeing a higher frame rate, resolving a temperature alert, or repairing a hardware fault.

Escalate if the PS5 loses power or turns off while playing, if a high-temperature alert persists after cooling and airflow checks, or if crashes continue across multiple games. Sony says problems affecting more than one game may indicate a console issue. Its power troubleshooting covers losing power, not turning on, crashing or freezing, and turning off during play; its noise guidance directs users to support if the recommended steps do not solve the problem.

- For a persistent temperature warning or repeated shutdown, describe when the alert or power loss happens and what placement and vent checks you have completed.
- For failures in several games, note which titles are affected and whether the issue also occurs outside online play.
- Use the PlayStation support or repair options for your region. Support routes and available repair options are regional and may change; Sony’s PS5 power troubleshooting and game troubleshooting pages provide relevant diagnostic routes.
There is no official incidence figure in Sony’s cited support and safety material for how often PS5s overheat, have loud fans, or stutter. Avoid using an unsourced percentage—or the presence of fan noise alone—to decide that a console has a hardware failure.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhen you contact support, a concise description of the symptom pattern is more useful than a guess at its cause. Note whether a high-temperature message appeared, whether the console turned off, whether the issue is limited to one game or spans several, and whether it occurs only online. Also mention that you checked clearance, vents, and dust, and whether an M.2 SSD is installed if you are reporting a temperature warning. These details correspond to the checks Sony’s own guidance asks you to make; they do not replace the regional diagnostics or determine the repair outcome.
Use Sony’s regional PlayStation support or repair destination for persistent alerts, shutdowns, or multi-game failures. The available route can vary by region, and options may change. Sony’s power troubleshooting covers consoles that lose power, will not turn on, crash or freeze, or turn off during play. Its game troubleshooting helps distinguish a single affected title from a problem across multiple games. If the simpler checks do not resolve persistent noise, Sony’s noise guidance also points owners to support.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical order of checks
- Identify the signal. Separate a louder fan from a high-temperature alert, stuttering, or power loss. They call for different next steps.
- Fix the environment. Clear blocked vents, provide at least 10 cm of space around the console, and avoid cramped locations and long-fibre carpet.
- Clean only with power disconnected. Unplug the AC cable at the rear and use a low-powered vacuum around and in the vents if dust has accumulated.
- For a temperature alert, shut down and cool. Improve ventilation and, if an M.2 SSD is installed, check its heat-dissipation parts.
- For stuttering, isolate the scope. Update game and system software, follow the game-specific steps if one game freezes or crashes, and use Safe Mode guidance for broader performance drops.
- Escalate persistent or widespread faults. Repeated alerts, shutdowns, power loss, or failures across multiple games belong with PlayStation support or repairs.
In short, do not try every remedy regardless of the symptom. Ordinary fan noise calls for a placement and dust check. A high-temperature notification calls for shutdown and cooling. Stuttering calls for software and game troubleshooting unless another warning or power symptom changes the situation. Persistent or widespread problems should move from home checks to official support.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my PS5 fan so loud during a game?
Sony says the fan may temporarily run faster during some games and applications to cool the system. If there is no temperature warning or shutdown, first check that vents are clear, the console has at least 10 cm of space around it, it is not in a cramped location or on long-fibre carpet, and dust has not built up. If the noise remains concerning after those checks, contact PlayStation Support.

What should I do if my PS5 shows a high-temperature warning?
Turn the console off and let it cool. Move it to a well-ventilated location away from high temperatures, check the vents, and, if an M.2 SSD is installed, check that its heat-dissipation parts have not detached. Sony warns that continued use while the message displays may make the console non-operational. If the alert returns after these checks, use Sony’s regional support or repair route.
Does PS5 stuttering mean the console is overheating?
No. Stuttering or a performance drop alone does not establish a thermal cause. Check game and system software updates, determine whether one title or multiple games are affected, and follow Sony’s game-specific guidance for freezes or crashes. For broader performance drops, consult Sony’s Safe Mode guidance for Clear System Software Cache and Rebuild Database; neither is a guaranteed fix for overheating or higher frame rates.
Is it safe to vacuum dust from PS5 vents?
Sony recommends a low-powered vacuum for dust in and around the vents. Turn the console off and disconnect the AC cable from the rear before cleaning. Keep the task external; Sony’s guidance does not recommend internal disassembly, compressed air, aftermarket cooling accessories, or replacement thermal material as routine fixes.
