Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →First identify whether you’re using Java Edition or Bedrock Edition, then check the client, saved world, and server separately: they can have different version information. A client’s version display does not prove which server software is running, and a Java save’s data version is not necessarily the release in which the world was created.
Why “the Minecraft version” can mean different things
Before comparing numbers, separate four checks: the edition, the game client you launched, the saved world’s metadata, and the server software the host started. These are related, but none is a universal substitute for the others.

- Edition: Java Edition or Bedrock Edition. The editions do not directly cross-play in the normal pairing described in Minecraft’s multiplayer guidance.
- Client release: The version of the game currently running on your device.
- World metadata: Information stored with a save, which may reflect a later upgrade rather than the world’s original creation.
- Server release or build: The software package actually running on the host.
For a multiplayer mismatch, note the edition and client release on each side, then verify the server’s own release. For a save-file question, inspect the world metadata separately.

Check which edition you and the server use
Look at the game or launcher and the platform you’re playing on. Confirm that both players are using Java Edition or both are using Bedrock Edition before troubleshooting numbered versions. Java players join Java hosted games, and Bedrock players join Bedrock hosted games; the editions do not directly cross-play in the ordinary setup described by Minecraft’s multiplayer guidance and Minecraft’s Java and Bedrock overview.

Check the client version you launched
Java Edition
In Java Edition 1.21.6, Mojang documents F3+V as a shortcut that prints client-side version information. On a compact keyboard, you may need to hold Fn as well. The shortcut is documented for that release; do not assume it works the same way in every later version. See the Java Edition 1.21.6 release notes.
You can also check the selected installation or profile in the Minecraft Launcher and the version shown on the game’s title screen. Make sure you’re checking the installation you actually launched, particularly if you keep multiple profiles or versions.

Bedrock Edition
Check the Bedrock game’s displayed release or the installed game package on your platform. Do not use F3+V as a Bedrock version check: the shortcut cited above is documented for Java Edition 1.21.6, not as an edition-independent control.

A Java world’s level.dat file contains a DataVersion integer. This identifies the save’s data format; it is not a friendly release label. To interpret it as a Minecraft release, use a maintained mapping such as the Minecraft Wiki’s Data version reference.

- Exit the world before inspecting its files.
- Make a backup of the world folder.
- Open
level.datwith an NBT-aware viewer. Do not try to interpret or edit the binary file in a plain text editor. - Find the
DataVersionvalue and consult a reliable mapping if you need a release label.
The value describes the save data format, not necessarily the exact version in which the world was first created. If a world has been opened and saved in a later release, its metadata may reflect that later save.
Check which server software is running
If you administer the server
Verify the exact server package or Java server JAR named in the startup command, then check the startup output or logs for the running software’s release information. For Bedrock Dedicated Server, verify the downloaded and running package and its startup output. Minecraft provides separate Java and Bedrock server downloads and requirements; confirm you are checking the software for the edition you intend to host.

- The classic UNO card game builds fun on game night with a Minecraft theme.
- UNO Minecraft features a deck and storage tin decorated with graphics from the popular video game.
- Players match colors and numbers to the card on top of the discard pile as in the classic game.
- The Creeper card unique to this deck forces other players to draw 3 cards.
- Makes a great gift for kid, teen, adult and family game nights with 2 to 10 players ages 7 years and older, especially Minecraft and video game fans.
If someone else hosts the server
Ask the owner or host for the running edition and exact server release or build. The version displayed on your client only identifies client-side information; it does not establish which server JAR or package is running. Public status results or compatibility bridges may not reveal the authoritative server software identity.
Bedrock version fields and settings that are easy to misread
Bedrock uses multiple versioning systems. Microsoft describes base_game_version as a world-template concept in a template’s manifest.json; it is not a general-purpose field for identifying every Bedrock world’s current game or server build. See Microsoft’s Bedrock versioning guidance.

Likewise, the Bedrock Dedicated Server property level-name selects the world folder the server loads; it is not the server program’s release number. Check the Bedrock Dedicated Server properties reference for the setting’s purpose, and verify the server package separately.
Compare the right details when a player cannot join
Write down the relevant information rather than relying on one version number:
- Edition and platform: Java or Bedrock, and the platform each player uses.
- Client release: What each player’s launcher, title screen, or documented in-game display reports.
- Server software and build: The package or JAR the host actually started.
- World metadata: Java
DataVersion, or the specific Bedrock/template metadata in question. Treat it as metadata, not an all-purpose current-version label. - Join method: Dedicated server, Realm, LAN, or another hosting path. For exact compatibility requirements, check the current official guidance for that path.
If the editions differ, address that first. If they match, compare the clients with the server release the host confirms; inspect save metadata only when the question concerns the world file itself.
