Start by identifying the exact Witcher 3 build, storefront, and DirectX mode you have installed: the game’s requirements differ by build, and the announced new minimums apply from an upcoming update rather than automatically to every existing installation. Then troubleshoot the symptom—launch or gameplay crashes, low frame rates and stutter, or long loading times—using reversible steps and checking after each change.
1. Identify your installed build before troubleshooting
In the game’s main menu, note the version shown beneath the title. Also write down your storefront, whether you launch in DirectX 11 or DirectX 12 (if both are offered for your build), and whether mods, trainers, or console commands are enabled. CD PROJEKT RED’s PC support form requests these details and advises updating older builds before reporting a problem. If you intentionally keep an older build or use mods, record that rather than changing versions as a first step.

Do not treat the legacy requirements and the announced updated minimums as one universal list. CD PROJEKT RED’s requirements page includes legacy DirectX 11 tiers and next-generation DirectX 12 high and ultra tiers. It states that Windows 7 and Windows 8 support ended on May 21, 2024. The same page announces a new baseline that begins with the next update; confirm whether it applies to your installed build before using it to judge compatibility.
#1 Best Overall
- Play as a highly trained monster slayer for hire.
- Built for endless adventure, the massive open world of The Witcher sets new standards in terms of size, depth and complexity.
- The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Game of the Year edition brings together the base game and all the additional content released to date.
| Requirements set | What it applies to | Published details |
|---|---|---|
| Legacy and next-generation tiers | The listed DirectX 11 minimum/recommended and DirectX 12 high/ultra configurations on the official page; check the exact tier for your build and settings. | Includes 50 GB disk space; memory ranges from 8 GB to 16 GB across the high and ultra tiers. CPU and GPU differ by tier. Windows 7/8 support was discontinued May 21, 2024. See CD PROJEKT RED’s requirements page for the complete tier-by-tier specifications. |
| Announced upcoming minimum | Applies starting with the next update, according to the requirements notice; do not assume every existing installation already uses it. | Windows 11, DirectX 12, 12 GB RAM, a 70 GB SSD, Intel Core i5-8400 or AMD Ryzen 5 2600, and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 or AMD Radeon RX 5500 XT 8GB. Published by CD PROJEKT RED in 2026. See the official notice. |
The notice says Windows 10 may still run the game, but it will no longer be tested and compatibility or performance is not guaranteed going forward. It also says an SSD is required for the upcoming baseline and associates SSD storage with faster loading and smoother asset streaming. That is a build-specific requirement and potential loading/streaming benefit—not evidence that an SSD will fix crashes or every stutter.
3. If the game crashes or will not launch
CD PROJEKT RED’s crash guidance recommends checking requirements, closing applications not needed to run the game, verifying game files, and reinstalling graphics drivers. Work through those actions one at a time so you can tell whether the symptom changes.
- Compare your PC with the correct requirements. Use the requirements set that applies to your installed build and intended settings.
- Close nonessential applications. The official guidance includes antivirus and antimalware software among applications to close temporarily for troubleshooting. If you do so, restore your usual protection afterward. The support article also recommends checking the PC for malware or viruses; it does not identify malware as the likely cause of a particular crash.
- Verify the installed game files. Use your storefront’s file-verification feature. The support guidance recommends this step, but the exact menu path depends on the storefront.
- Clean-install the graphics driver. Use the driver installer’s clean-install option where available, following the GPU maker’s instructions. CD PROJEKT RED presents this as a troubleshooting step, not a guaranteed fix.
- Consider a previous driver if the timing fits. If the crash began immediately after a driver update, the official advice says an older driver may sometimes help. Install a known previous version from the GPU maker and report the issue if it persists.
4. If frame rates are low, gameplay stutters, or loading is slow
When the PC meets the minimum requirements for the build, CD PROJEKT RED recommends this sequence for low frame rates or slow and choppy performance:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Clean-install the graphics driver.
- Verify the game cache or installed files in your storefront.
- Disable overlays, including overlays from Discord, Ubisoft Connect, or GOG Galaxy.
- Close unnecessary applications, including hardware-monitoring software and antivirus or antimalware software, while troubleshooting.
Retest after each action rather than changing several things at once. If the problem started directly after a graphics-driver update, try the previous driver version and report the issue, as the official support guidance recommends.
Rank #3
- Italian edition.
Do not assume DirectX 11 or DirectX 12 is universally faster or more stable: the available mode depends on the build, and the support material does not rank them for every GPU or symptom. Compare modes only if your installed build offers both, and note which one reproduces the problem. An SSD may help loading and asset streaming where relevant to the build, but it is not a general crash remedy.
5. What to include if you contact support
If the problem remains, send a report through CD PROJEKT RED’s PC support page. Include the details that help distinguish a build-specific issue from a crash or performance problem:
Quick Recap
- Storefront, game version, DirectX mode, and whether mods, trainers, or console commands are enabled.
- Whether the issue occurs at launch, during play in one particular location, or continuously; note what you were doing when it happened.
- A DxDiag report: open Windows Run, enter
DxDiag, select Save All Information…, and attach the saved report. - A short video of the symptom, if possible.
- For a location-specific problem, the relevant save. The support instructions ask you to include all files in that save folder; a compressed archive is accepted. Saves are usually under
