To check the firmware version on a PS5, open Settings > System > System Software > Console Information. Read the system software version shown there. If Sony considers that installation current, the same screen displays “Up to date” beneath the version.
This check only identifies what is installed. It does not test whether a homebrew exploit, payload, or complete setup works on your console. Write down the exact version before consulting current project documentation, and do not start an update simply to discover the version.

How do I check my PS5 firmware version?
Use the PS5’s built-in Console Information page:
- From the PS5 home screen, open Settings.
- Select System.
- Choose System Software.
- Open Console Information.
- Read the value next to the system software version.
The version displayed on this page is the software currently installed on that console. If Sony’s service identifies it as the latest release, “Up to date” appears underneath. Seeing that phrase is a status indication, not a different version number.

Where do I find my PS5 system software version?
The version is not listed in the general Settings landing page. It is inside the System Software section, on the Console Information screen. The complete path is:
Settings > System > System Software > Console Information
“Firmware” is the term commonly used in homebrew discussions; Sony’s menu calls it the system software version. When documentation asks for your PS5 firmware, copy the value shown in Console Information rather than relying on a remembered update date or the console’s model number.
What each item on the screen means
Console Information can show more than a number. Treat each item as a separate piece of information.

Checking the version without changing the console
Viewing Console Information is a read-only way to identify the installed software. You do not need to accept an update, connect a USB drive, or alter system settings to read the version. The update controls are deliberately listed under a different submenu.
After opening Settings > System > System Software, choose Console Information for the installed version. The neighboring option, System Software Update and Settings, is where Sony places update-related controls. Selecting that area can show whether an update is available, but it is not necessary for the basic version check.

If the update page says “Update Available”, that means a newer release exists; it does not mean the version shown in Console Information is missing or unreadable. Leave the update page without starting an installation when you are collecting information for a homebrew decision.

Updating changes the software state you are trying to document and may remove the conditions on which a particular homebrew method depends. First record the installed version, then decide what to do after reading documentation that addresses that exact version.
How to record the version accurately
Homebrew instructions often distinguish firmware builds that look similar at a glance. Copy every character in the system software version, including punctuation and any suffix or beta indication. Do not substitute the date on which the console was last updated, the PS5 model name, or the version number of a game.
A reliable note should include:
- The complete system software version as displayed under Console Information.
- Whether the screen shows “Up to date” or another status.
- Whether the console is enrolled in a system software beta and therefore reports a beta version.
- The date on which you checked, so you know when the information was captured.
Keep the note with the link or title of the documentation you are reading. If you later compare instructions, you can tell whether two pages refer to the same installed build instead of treating all nearby version numbers as interchangeable.
Why the firmware number matters for homebrew
A PS5 firmware number is an input to compatibility checking, not a guarantee that a homebrew setup will work. Community setup documentation explains that a console’s prospects depend on two changing factors: the firmware installed on the console and the public exploits available for that firmware.
An exploit is the part of a chain that takes advantage of a vulnerability. A payload is code delivered after an exploit has been reached. A complete setup may add a loader, a host, configuration steps, or other components. A page describing one layer does not automatically prove that the other layers are available or functional for your version.

This distinction matters when reading a project page. A repository may document capabilities associated with a homebrew project without being an exhaustive compatibility chart for every PS5 firmware. The etaHEN project, for example, documents homebrew-related capabilities, but its repository landing page should not be treated as a universal list of supported versions.
Compatibility information also changes as public exploits, payloads, and setup procedures are discovered, revised, or withdrawn. A version that appears in an old community post may not describe the current tool chain, while a newly documented method may require a different version. Check the exact firmware against current documentation from the maintainers of the relevant tools immediately before following a procedure.
Do not infer support from a version being numerically close to one mentioned by a guide. Unless the maintainer explicitly covers your installed build, treat the result as unresolved. A version check gives you the precise fact needed to ask the compatibility question; it does not answer that question by itself.
How to evaluate a homebrew compatibility page
When several pages discuss the same PS5 firmware, compare what each page actually claims rather than counting every mention as confirmation. Four checks make the information easier to interpret.
1. Identify who maintains the information
Give the most weight to documentation maintained by the developers of the exploit, payload, or setup being discussed. Community summaries can be useful for orientation, but they may lag behind changes or combine steps from different projects. Do not present community compatibility claims as Sony guidance; Sony’s support material covers official system software procedures, not homebrew support.
2. Check the firmware coverage
Look for an explicit statement that includes your complete version. A broad statement such as “older firmware” does not establish support for a particular build. If a page lists ranges, confirm how the maintainer defines the endpoints and whether beta versions are included.

3. Check how current the page is
Scene documentation changes quickly. Note the page’s last update date or the date of its latest release information, when one is provided. A newer page is not automatically correct, but an undated or abandoned guide deserves extra caution when the platform software has changed.

4. Determine which layer is covered
Read whether the page describes an exploit, a payload, or a complete working setup. An exploit reference alone does not promise that a payload is available. A payload description alone does not explain how to reach it. A complete setup should identify the firmware versions, required components, and conditions under which the maintainer says it works.
Keep these distinctions in your notes. They prevent a single capability statement from being mistaken for an end-to-end compatibility claim.

Sony recommends using its official system software update procedures. Its support guidance warns that using update data from another source or an altered update method can affect console operation and may affect warranty or repair service.
That warning is separate from the version-check procedure. You can read Console Information without installing anything. If a homebrew plan involves changing system software, first understand the consequences described by the relevant documentation and Sony’s official instructions. Do not treat a file, script, or method found in an unverified post as an official update path.

The safest way to preserve an accurate starting point is to write down the installed version before making any change. Once the console has been updated, the earlier version is no longer the state you are evaluating, and a guide for the previous build may no longer apply.

If you cannot find the version
The menu path looks different
Follow the labels in order rather than searching the top-level Settings page: Settings, then System, then System Software, then Console Information. The version is on that final page.
You opened the update page instead
Return to the System Software menu and select Console Information. The update page is System Software Update and Settings; it is intended for update controls, not required for reading the installed version.
The screen says “Up to date”
Read the version value displayed above the status phrase. “Up to date” indicates that Sony regards the installed software as current; it is not a replacement for the version number needed when comparing homebrew documentation.
The console is running beta software
Beta participants can see the beta version in Console Information as well. Record that beta designation and disclose it when checking compatibility, because a beta build should not be silently treated as an ordinary public release.
A guide claims support but does not mention your exact build
Do not fill the gap by guessing from a nearby number. Look for current documentation from the relevant tool maintainers that explicitly covers the version shown on your console. If the page only describes a payload, exploit, or general capability, label the end-to-end setup as unconfirmed until all required layers are documented for your build.
Pre-homebrew version-check checklist
Complete these checks before acting on a compatibility claim:
- Open Settings > System > System Software > Console Information.
- Copy the entire system software version exactly as shown.
- Note whether Sony displays “Up to date” or whether the console reports a beta version.
- Keep the version note separate from any update decision.
- Read current documentation maintained for the exploit, payload, or complete setup you are considering.
- Confirm that the documentation names your exact firmware and identifies which layer of the setup it covers.
- Check the documentation’s date or release status before relying on it.
- Reconsider any instruction that relies on update data or a method outside Sony’s official update procedures.
What this check can—and cannot—tell you
The Console Information screen answers one precise question: which system software version is installed on this PS5? The “Up to date” message answers a second question: does Sony identify that installation as the latest release available to the console?

Neither item answers whether a particular homebrew chain will run. That decision requires a current, version-specific statement from the maintainers of the relevant tools, with the exploit, payload, and complete setup distinguished. Because public availability changes quickly, compatibility should be verified immediately before you proceed rather than copied from a fixed list.
Checking first keeps the decision grounded in the console’s actual state. It also avoids the common mistake of launching an update merely to discover information that the PS5 already displays in Console Information.
