“Family-friendly” is a household judgment, not a guarantee supplied by a colorful art style or age rating. A rating and its content descriptors are useful screening tools, but they cannot predict whether a particular child will enjoy a game or find it comfortable.

Compare the three games against your household’s needs
| Game | Local play on one system | Play style and family fit | Published US ESRB descriptors |
|---|---|---|---|
| Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury | 1–4 players, according to Nintendo’s US product listing. The main game supports local teaming or competition; Bowser’s Fury lets a second player help as Bowser Jr. | Course-based platforming alongside a separate free-roaming adventure. A strong fit when siblings or adults and children want to play at the same time, or when one package with two styles of play appeals. | Mild Cartoon Violence; Users Interact. |
| Super Mario Odyssey | 1–2 players, according to Nintendo’s US product listing. Player one controls Mario; player two controls Cappy. | A sandbox-style exploration and collecting adventure. Consider it when a child wants to explore and a parent or sibling is happy to assist in a secondary role. | Comic Mischief; Cartoon Violence. |
| Kirby and the Forgotten Land | 1–2 players, according to Nintendo’s US product listing; local co-op is supported. | 3D platforming with two difficulty choices and an officially described free demo of three stages. A useful option when challenge flexibility or sampling a few stages before deciding matters. | Cartoon Violence. |

Choose by who will play together
Several people want to play at once
Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury is the clearest fit among these three if you want up to four players sharing one system in the listed mode. Nintendo describes the course-based game as supporting local teamwork or competition: “Pounce and climb through dozens of colorful courses! Multiply the fun by teaming up with or competing against friends locally* or online** to reach each stage’s goal.” The publisher also lists a second-player helper role in Bowser’s Fury, rather than describing that mode as the same four-player setup.

One child plays while another person helps
In Super Mario Odyssey, the second player controls Cappy while the first controls Mario. That arrangement may suit a caregiver who wants to join in without taking over the main character. It is a support role, so it is not equivalent to two players each controlling a full character.
Two players want local co-op
Kirby and the Forgotten Land lists one-system play for one to two players and supports local co-op. Nintendo’s listing establishes the player count, but does not establish how each child will experience the role or difficulty; consider whether the two-player arrangement fits your family’s preferences.
Match the challenge and play style to the child
For a choice of difficulty
Kirby and the Forgotten Land names two modes: Spring-Breeze has more health and easier enemies, while Wild has tougher enemies and more rewards. Nintendo also describes a free demo containing three stages, which gives a family a chance to sample part of the game before buying. The demo is a limited sample, not evidence of how the entire game will feel.
Rank #2
- A variety of playable characters are available, some with unique attributes that affect gameplay and platforming physics.
- Younger and less-experienced players will love playing as Toadette, who is brand new to both games, and Nabbit, who was formerly only playable in New Super Luigi U. Both characters offer extra assistance during play.
- Multiplayer sessions are even more fun, frantic, and exciting thanks to entertaining character interactions. Need a boost? Try jumping off a teammate’s head or getting a teammate to throw you.
- Features a wealth of help features, like a Hints gallery, reference videos, and a Super Guide in New Super Mario Bros. U that can complete levels for you if they’re giving you trouble.
- Three additional modes—Boost Rush, Challenges, and Coin Battle—mix up gameplay and add replayability, while also upping the difficulty for players who want to try something harder. Players can use their Mii characters in these modes.
For courses, exploration, or a mix
- Shorter, stage-based play and shared competition or teamwork: Super Mario 3D World’s course structure may be a better match.
- Free-roaming play and collectible hunting: Super Mario Odyssey is described by Nintendo as a sandbox-style adventure.
- Both course-based and free-roaming play: Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury combines the course-based game with a separate free-roaming adventure.
These are structural differences, not claims about which game is easier, longer, or more enjoyable. The official listings do not establish a child-specific difficulty or enjoyment ranking.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check content ratings and household controls
Review the full age rating and content descriptors used in your region before purchase. Nintendo’s US pages list different ESRB descriptors for these games, and a descriptor is a prompt to investigate content—not a complete prediction of whether your child will be comfortable with it.
Nintendo Switch parental controls provide system-level options. Nintendo says caregivers can restrict software by age rating and adjust communication and social-media settings on the system or through the smart-device app. The app can also set daily play-time limits and show gameplay history. These tools do not mean that a particular game has no online interaction: Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury is listed with “Users Interact,” and Nintendo notes that online features have requirements. If online access is not wanted, focus on the local play options and configure the system’s communication settings accordingly.

Confirm the console and play setup before buying
Nintendo’s product pages caution that compatibility and experience may vary on Nintendo Switch Lite and that additional accessories may be required for some setups. If the child will play on a Lite, or if you have a specific controller arrangement in mind, check the relevant game page and your console setup before purchase rather than assuming the standard Switch experience applies unchanged.
Nintendo lists physical editions for Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury and Super Mario Odyssey. The official Kirby listing provides its game details and demo information. Current retailer stock and prices are not established here, so verify them with the seller before purchasing.
Quick Recap
A practical decision order
- Screen the content: check the complete rating and descriptors for your region, then decide whether they fit your child and household.
- Settle the player setup: choose four-player local courses, a Cappy helper role, or local two-player Kirby co-op according to who will actually play together.
- Pick the play structure: decide between courses, free-roaming exploration, or a package that includes both styles.
- Consider challenge and sampling: if adjustable difficulty is important, compare Kirby’s named modes; its official listing also describes a free three-stage demo.
- Check controls and hardware: set parental controls as needed and confirm compatibility and accessory needs for your console model.
