1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThere is no single “local voice model” that determines whether game conversations feel real time. A practical system is a pipeline: speech recognition turns the player’s microphone audio into text, a response model generates dialogue, and text-to-speech (TTS) produces audible speech. Choose and measure those components together on the PC that will run the game. Streaming can make a reply start sooner, but it does not prove that the complete turn will be fast enough or that interruptions will work reliably.
The safest approach is to define your language, latency and interruption requirements, select compatible components, then benchmark the complete pipeline while the game is running. Existing published numbers are useful reference points, not game-specific guarantees: Qwen reports 97 ms first-packet TTS latency for one variant, a local-assistant guide estimates 2–4 seconds for a modern GPU setup, and NVIDIA documents a 3.07 GB GPU-memory profile for one streaming recognizer. None is a universal gameplay result.

What you are actually choosing
A voice conversation has at least three timing-critical stages:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Speech-to-text (ASR): captures microphone audio and emits a transcript, ideally while the player is still speaking.
- Response generation: sends the transcript and game context to a language model (LLM), which produces dialogue tokens.
- Text-to-speech: converts those tokens into audio, preferably as a stream rather than waiting for the complete sentence.
The player experiences the sum of capture, endpoint detection, transcription, prompt processing, text generation, audio synthesis, buffering and playback. A fast TTS model cannot compensate for a recognizer that waits for a long utterance, and a fast recognizer cannot hide an LLM that generates slowly. Treat the model choice as a pipeline design decision, not a contest between isolated checkpoints.

Why streaming changes perception
Streaming allows intermediate text or audio to be delivered before a complete response is available. The player may hear the first phrase while the LLM is still generating later tokens. This can reduce perceived waiting time, but it does not automatically provide a short end-to-end turn. Buffering, sentence segmentation, audio-device scheduling and interruption logic can still add delay. Record both time to first audio and time to the end of the turn.
Interruption is a separate requirement
In a game, players will often speak over a character. Your stack must detect new speech, stop or fade the current audio, cancel generation where possible, and start a new turn without stale text leaking into the reply. A model advertised as streaming is not necessarily interruptible; verify cancellation behavior in the runtime and integration layer.
Set the target before comparing models
Write a short specification for the experience you want. It prevents a benchmark number from deciding the design for you.
Language and vocabulary
List every spoken language and variant the game needs, plus names, fictional terms, player slang and code words. Multilingual coverage is not the same as accurate recognition of game terminology. Test transcripts with the actual microphone, room noise and push-to-talk behavior you expect. NVIDIA’s support matrix includes streaming Parakeet modes and Whisper Large v3 Multilingual, but it does not provide an in-game accuracy comparison between them.
Responsiveness target
Define separate limits for:
- time from the end of a player utterance to the first generated text token;
- time to the first audible response;
- time to finish the response;
- time to stop current speech after an interruption.
Use percentiles, such as a typical result and a slow-session result, rather than one best run. Also decide whether the game can tolerate a longer first response when the character’s delivery is richer.
Voice and interaction behavior
Choose whether you need one fixed voice, several characters, multiple languages, emotion controls or continuous speech. Decide how much of a response may be buffered before playback and whether the player can barge in at any point. These choices affect TTS selection and the amount of engineering required around it.

Resource and deployment limits
Record the graphics memory available after the game starts, the CPU headroom, operating system, audio devices and whether models must run without sending data off the machine. “Local” describes where a particular implementation runs; it does not give every checkpoint the same license, runtime support or privacy terms. Check each model’s license, weights, dependencies and data path before shipping.
Choose the speech recognizer first
ASR is the front door to the conversation. A wrong transcript can produce a fluent but incorrect response, so evaluate recognition quality and timing together.
Streaming and language coverage
Prefer a recognizer that can emit partial or final text while audio arrives if the game benefits from early processing. Confirm that its language set matches your target. An English-only streaming profile is not a substitute for multilingual support, and a multilingual model may have different speed or memory behavior. Test proper nouns and short commands separately from ordinary sentences.
Documented NVIDIA option
NVIDIA’s ASR NIM documentation requires an NVIDIA GPU with compute capability 8.0 or higher. In its batch-size-one streaming profile, Parakeet 0.6b CTC English is listed at 3.07 GB of GPU memory. Those figures apply to that service and profile; they are not a minimum requirement for every local ASR runtime or every Parakeet deployment. If your card does not meet the documented compute capability, select another backend rather than assuming the profile will work.
Whisper and project-specific timing
The vox project README reports a benchmark on its named Linux and RTX 4070 Ti SUPER system. In that setup, Whisper base processed 13.8 seconds of audio in 1.1 seconds in the project’s Linux CUDA build, compared with 15.1 seconds in its Linux CPU build. This is a project measurement, not a general guarantee: implementation, model variant, audio length, drivers and hardware all change the result. It does demonstrate why a CPU-only design can have very different behavior from a CUDA build.

- GPU memory and CPU use while the game is rendering;
- behavior when the player stops speaking mid-sentence or starts again quickly.
Select the response model independently
The cited sources do not establish one best response LLM for games. Choose the smallest model that produces consistent, context-aware dialogue within your latency and memory budget, then keep the interface modular so you can replace it without rewriting ASR or TTS.

Quality and consistency
Build a test set of game situations: lore questions, tactical requests, inventory commands, ambiguous references and deliberately adversarial prompts. Score factual consistency with the game state, adherence to character rules, refusal of unsafe actions and tendency to ramble. A model that writes impressive paragraphs may be a poor conversational choice if it takes too long to reach its first useful sentence.
Generation speed and token streaming
Measure time to the first useful token and sustained generation speed on the target PC, with the game active. Your integration should stream tokens to a sentence or clause buffer rather than waiting for the full response. Keep prompts short enough to avoid unnecessary prefill work, and cap response length when a character only needs a brief answer. These are engineering controls; the cited sources do not provide a cross-model speed ranking.
Context and cancellation
Pass only the game state the character needs. Include a turn identifier so late tokens from a cancelled response cannot be spoken after a new player utterance. Your runtime should expose cancellation or a generation deadline; if it cannot, stop playback and discard stale output at the audio layer.

Evaluate speech synthesis for first audio and interruption
TTS determines how quickly the player hears a response and how natural that response sounds. Compare first-packet latency, time to usable audio, voice quality, language coverage, memory use and cancellation behavior.
Qwen3-TTS streaming figures
The Qwen Team’s Qwen3-TTS technical report, dated January 22, 2026, says: “Designed for streaming text input and streaming audio output, it achieves a first-packet latency as low as 97 ms (0.6B variant) and 101 ms (1.7B variant).” These are report-specific streaming TTS measurements. They describe the first audio packet under the report’s setup, not the time from a player’s speech to a complete response and not a gameplay benchmark.
Continuous-speech research
VoiceChat-TTS, an arXiv preprint dated August 13, 2026, describes a low-latency continuous speech synthesis approach for interactive agents and discusses interruption controls. Treat it as a research direction rather than a production guarantee. Verify that its implementation, license and runtime meet your shipping requirements before depending on it.

Buffering and voice quality
Very small audio buffers reduce waiting but increase the risk of clicks, underruns and audible gaps when generation fluctuates. Start with a buffer that remains stable while the game is under load, then reduce it while monitoring glitches. Compare voices using the same text, because a model can sound natural on long prose yet stumble on short, rapidly changing game lines.
How to interpret end-to-end latency numbers
End-to-end latency is the interval from the player finishing a spoken turn to the first audible response, or, for a stricter metric, from speech onset to first audio. State which definition you use. Include microphone capture, voice-activity detection, ASR finalization, LLM prefill and generation, TTS first packet, audio buffering and playback scheduling.
Published reference estimates
A Local LLM Team guide published April 8, 2026 estimates 2–4 seconds of total latency for its described modern-GPU assistant setup and 5–8 seconds for its low-tier CPU example. Those are estimates for the guide’s configurations, not independent tests and not measurements with a game rendering at the same time. Use them to set expectations, then replace them with measurements from your own pipeline.
A practical latency ledger
| Stage | Record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Audio capture and endpointing | Utterance end to ASR submission | Long silence thresholds make every model appear slow. |
| ASR | Submission to final transcript | Shows language and hardware effects before generation begins. |
| LLM | Final transcript to first useful token and full response | Separates prompt processing from token generation. |
| TTS | First text chunk to first audio packet | Allows comparison of streaming speech engines. |
| Playback | Audio packet to speaker output | Captures buffering and device scheduling. |
Run enough repeated turns to expose slow cases. Record warm and cold starts separately; loading weights after a scene change is not representative of an already-running conversation. Note whether the game is rendering, streaming assets or compiling shaders during each run.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Can the full pipeline run on CPU only?
Yes, a CPU-only pipeline is technically possible, but “possible” does not mean suitable for your target interaction. The local-assistant guide’s low-tier CPU example estimates 5–8 seconds total latency. The vox benchmark also shows a large difference between its Linux CUDA and Linux CPU builds for Whisper base. Those figures indicate the risk, not a universal CPU performance rule.
When CPU-only is reasonable
- turns are intentionally slow, such as menu conversations;
- the response model and TTS are small enough to leave headroom for the game;
- you can tolerate delayed or non-overlapping speech;
- the game targets machines without a supported GPU and you have measured the complete stack.
When a GPU becomes necessary
If ASR, generation or TTS misses the response budget while the game is running, test GPU acceleration before changing the game design. NVIDIA’s documented NIM requirement is a compute capability of at least 8.0, but other local backends have different requirements. Do not treat the RTX 4070 Ti SUPER in the vox README as a universal minimum or recommendation; it is simply that project’s benchmark system.

Build and benchmark the pipeline step by step
- Write the interaction contract. Specify languages, microphone mode, target first-audio delay, maximum response length, voice count and interruption behavior.
- Choose an ASR candidate. Confirm language coverage, streaming support, license and runtime. For NVIDIA ASR NIM, check the documented GPU compute capability and profile memory before installation.
- Choose the response model. Test dialogue quality and first-token timing with representative game prompts. Keep model access behind an interface so it can be swapped.
- Choose TTS. Compare first-packet timing, naturalness, language support and cancellation. Treat Qwen’s 97 ms and 101 ms figures as reference TTS metrics, not complete-turn targets.
- Instrument every boundary. Timestamp microphone capture, ASR partial and final text, first LLM token, first TTS packet, playback start, interruption request and playback stop.
- Run with the game active. Exercise normal rendering, background asset loads, voice chat and the target audio device. Measure warm and cold starts separately.
- Test interruptions. Speak while audio is playing, repeat the interruption at different points, and verify that old audio and old tokens cannot resume.
- Review resource ceilings. Log GPU memory, CPU utilization, temperatures, audio underruns and frame-time spikes. A voice turn that is fast but damages frame pacing is not a successful integration.
- Set a fallback. Define what happens when a model is loading, the GPU is full, the microphone is unavailable or generation exceeds the deadline: shorten the reply, use a prerecorded line, or show text.
Troubleshoot common failure modes
First audio is consistently late
Check endpointing and ASR finalization first. A long silence threshold can add more delay than TTS. Then inspect LLM prefill time, sentence buffering and audio-device latency. Stream shorter clauses only after confirming that the resulting voice does not sound fragmented.
Audio starts quickly but has gaps
Increase the playback buffer slightly, reduce concurrent game load, or use a TTS configuration with steadier streaming. Log underruns rather than judging from one successful line. A low first-packet number is not useful if subsequent packets arrive too late to maintain playback.
Interruptions leave a character talking
Make interruption a transaction: mark the current turn cancelled, stop playback, cancel generation, clear queued audio and reject tokens carrying the old turn identifier. If the backend cannot cancel, discard its output and prevent the audio queue from accepting it.
Recommended Free Tools
Transcripts are wrong in noisy scenes
Test microphone placement, gain, push-to-talk and noise suppression before replacing the model. Add game-specific vocabulary where the recognizer supports it, and compare partial versus final transcripts. A multilingual model chosen for coverage may still need a different runtime or model size for acceptable speed.
Frame rate drops during speech
Profile GPU memory and contention while the game is rendering. Move one component to the CPU only if the resulting latency remains acceptable, reduce model size or schedule generation during less demanding frames. Do not infer that buying a faster card is required until the chosen stack’s documented requirements and your measured bottleneck point there.
Decision guide for common game designs
| Design requirement | Priority | Selection approach |
|---|---|---|
| Fast companion banter in one language | First audio and interruption | Use streaming ASR and TTS, keep responses short, and benchmark cancellation under load. |
| Multilingual narrative characters | Language coverage and voice consistency | Start with a recognizer that explicitly supports the required languages, then test TTS quality and per-language latency. |
| Strategy or accessibility commands | Recognition accuracy | Prioritize terminology and noisy-microphone tests; a slightly slower but more accurate transcript may be preferable. |
| Low-end hardware target | Resource ceilings | Measure CPU-only and reduced-size configurations; design a text or prerecorded fallback if the measured budget is missed. |
| Immersive overlapping dialogue | Interruption and continuous output | Evaluate cancellation semantics and continuous-speech research implementations separately from ordinary sentence TTS. |
Privacy, licensing and maintenance checks
Keep a record of the exact checkpoint, quantization, runtime version and model license used in a build. Confirm whether audio, transcripts or prompts ever leave the machine; a local front end can still call a remote service if the implementation is configured that way. Plan for updates to drivers, runtimes and model weights, because a change that improves quality can alter memory use or timing. Re-run the same game workload after each update.
What the available evidence can and cannot prove
The published material supports a comparison method and several conditional reference points: Qwen’s report-specific first-packet TTS figures, NVIDIA’s documented GPU and memory requirements for a particular ASR service profile, the local-assistant guide’s estimated latency tiers, and the vox project’s hardware-specific CUDA-versus-CPU timings. No cited source provides a controlled benchmark of these components during named gameplay, so there is no evidence-based universal winner. Your final choice should be the pipeline that meets your measured first-audio, completion, interruption and frame-time targets on the actual game PC.
