Sony says PS5 consoles play PS4 games from both discs and digital libraries, and that more than 4,000 PS4 games are playable across PS4 and PS5. If your collection is on PS4 discs, buy a PS5 model fitted with a disc drive. If you own PS3 discs, a PS5 is not a replacement: Sony explicitly says PS5 consoles do not support PlayStation 3 discs. You will need compatible PS3 hardware, or you can investigate whether a particular title is currently offered for streaming in the PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog.
The right choice depends on three things: which PlayStation generation your games belong to, whether you own discs or digital purchases, and whether you accept subscription-based streaming instead of using original hardware. The exact game, your region and the console edition all matter, so treat broad compatibility claims as a starting point rather than a guarantee for every title.

Start with the games you actually own
Make a list of the older games you want to play before comparing consoles. Record the PlayStation generation, whether each copy is physical or digital, and whether you need local play from original hardware or are comfortable streaming. A console that is ideal for a digital PS4 library may be the wrong purchase for someone with a shelf of PS3 discs.

PS4 discs
A PS5 with a disc drive is the current-console route for PS4 discs. Insert the game disc, install or update the game as required by the console, and keep the disc in the drive when you play; the disc serves as the ownership check. A PS5 without an optical drive cannot read that collection. Confirm the precise edition you are buying, because “PS5” alone does not tell you whether a drive is included.

Digital PS4 purchases
Digital PS4 games are tied to the PlayStation account that bought them. On a PS5, sign in with that account and look in the game library to find eligible purchases. This approach does not require a disc drive, but you still need to verify the individual title. Losing access to the purchasing account, using a different account, or confusing a streaming entitlement with a purchase can make a game appear to be missing.
PS3 discs
PS5 does not read PS3 game discs. If you want to use those discs as discs, investigate a compatible PS3 console instead. Compatibility can depend on the particular game and console model, so check both before buying used hardware.
Earlier generations and catalog access
The official material considered here does not establish native PS1 or PS2 disc support on PS5. Do not buy a PS5 expecting it to read every older PlayStation disc. For a specific PS1, PS2 or PS3 game, check its current official listing and the options offered in your region.

Sony’s current ecosystem overview says more than 4,000 PS4 games are playable on both PS4 and PS5. That figure describes the PS4 library; it is not a promise that PS5 plays PS3, PS2 or PS1 software. Sony also says PS5 can play PS4 games in disc and digital formats.
“More than 4,000” is a platform-level count, not a guarantee for an unnamed game. A particular title may have licensing, technical or edition differences. Look up the exact game in Sony’s current compatibility guidance before you rely on it, especially if your copy is a regional release, special edition or disc that requires a separate download.
What to verify for each PS4 game
- The exact title and edition, including remasters or bundles that have a different listing.
- Whether Sony lists that game as playable on PS5.
- Whether your copy is a PS4 disc or a digital purchase.
- Whether a disc-drive model is required for your physical copy.
- Whether the game’s online services, downloadable content or saved-data features still operate; backward compatibility does not restore services that the publisher has closed.
The last point is a practical check rather than a statement that every game has a service problem. A game can launch successfully while a discontinued server, add-on or account service remains unavailable.

Choose the PS5 drive configuration deliberately
The disc-drive decision is the most important hardware choice for a PS4 owner. A drive-equipped PS5 can handle eligible PS4 discs and digital purchases. A digital-only PS5 can access eligible digital purchases but cannot read a PS4 disc, even if you own that disc and the same game is available digitally.

Buy a drive-equipped model when
- Your PS4 collection is primarily on discs.
- You borrow, buy or resell physical games.
- You want a fallback when a digital listing is delisted or unavailable.
- You are replacing a PS4 and want to keep using its physical library.
A digital-only model can fit when
- Every older game you care about is already a digital purchase on your account.
- You have checked that each title is eligible on PS5.
- You do not need to use PS4, PS3 or other physical discs.
- You accept that future access depends on the account and digital storefront availability.
Do not infer the drive configuration from a product photograph or a short retailer title. Read the model description and confirm whether an optical disc drive is included before paying. If the retailer sells more than one edition, compare the exact model names and contents.
Why a PS5 cannot replace a PS3 disc console
Sony’s support guidance states, “PS5 consoles do not support PlayStation®3 discs.” The statement appears on Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Philippines support site, so keep that geographic context in mind when reading regional support pages. The limitation is nevertheless direct: putting a PS3 disc into a PS5 is not a supported way to play it.
For a PS3 disc collection, the dependable physical-media route is compatible PS3 hardware. Check the console model, the game’s region and the condition of a used unit. A listing that powers on is not proof that its disc drive, controllers, storage or a particular game will work. Ask the seller what model is being offered and whether the exact title has been tested if that information matters to your purchase.
When a PS3 disc owner should consider another route
If you want only one or two PS3 games, compare the cost and inconvenience of maintaining PS3 hardware with the possibility of playing those titles through the current PlayStation Plus catalog. Catalog access is not disc ownership and does not cover every game. Treat it as a title-by-title alternative, not as a general PS3 compatibility layer.
Using PlayStation Plus Premium for selected classics
Sony describes classic PS3 games in the PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog as available through streaming only. Premium members may stream selected catalog titles, but the catalog is a changing, region-dependent selection. A subscription therefore answers a different question from “Which console reads my disc?” It provides access to listed games while the membership and listing remain valid; it does not convert an unlisted PS3 disc into a playable PS5 game.

Check availability before subscribing
- Search the current PlayStation Plus catalog for the exact game name and edition.
- Confirm that the listing is available in your country or account region.
- Read whether the title is streamable in your region and on your membership tier.
- Check the catalog’s current terms for removal or availability changes.
- Test your network against Sony’s streaming guidance before relying on the service.
Sony’s support guidance lists 5 Mbps as the minimum connection speed for PlayStation Plus game streaming and 15 Mbps for 1080p streaming. Those figures are thresholds, not a guarantee of perfect play: Wi-Fi interference, household traffic, latency and service congestion can still affect the result. If your connection is close to the minimum, a wired connection and reduced household traffic may make streaming more consistent, but no connection setup can make an unavailable title appear in the catalog.
Streaming trade-offs
- Advantages: no original console or disc drive is required, and a catalog title can be started on supported current hardware while the listing is active.
- Limitations: a Premium membership is required, the game must be offered for streaming in your region, internet access is required, and Sony can change catalog availability.
- Ownership difference: a subscription entitlement is not the same as owning a PS3 disc or a permanent digital purchase.

Step 1: Separate discs from account purchases
Put every desired game into one of two columns: physical disc or digital entitlement. Do not combine them simply because they are the same title. The physical column determines whether you need a drive; the digital column determines which account must be accessible.

Choose a drive-equipped PS5 if any important PS4 game is on disc. Choose a digital PS5 only when the library you care about is digital and the account is available. Choose compatible PS3 hardware when using PS3 discs is non-negotiable. Consider Premium streaming only after confirming the exact catalog entry and network suitability.
Step 5: Check regional conditions
Catalogs and streaming benefits can vary by region and change over time. Sony’s compatibility overview is US-facing, while the quoted PS3-disc statement comes from the Philippines support site. Use the support and store pages for your own account region when making the final decision.

Step 6: Keep a fallback plan
For a valuable physical collection, retain the original compatible console if storage space and maintenance allow. For digital games, keep the purchasing account secure and recoverable. For streaming, identify whether you would still want the game if it left the catalog; if the answer is yes, streaming alone may not meet your preservation goal.

Mistake: assuming “backward compatible” means every PlayStation generation
The documented broad support is for PS4 games on PS5. PS3 discs are explicitly unsupported, and the material here does not establish PS1 or PS2 disc support. Match the console to the generation instead of relying on the phrase “backward compatible.”
Mistake: buying a digital PS5 while owning PS4 discs
A digital purchase of the console cannot read a disc you already own. Either choose a PS5 with a disc drive or budget for obtaining a supported digital version of each game, where one exists and is available to your account.
Mistake: treating a catalog listing as permanent ownership

Mistake: buying used PS3 hardware without checking the model
Used listings can omit model details or describe only storage capacity. Confirm the model, disc-drive condition, controller compatibility and return policy, then verify that your exact game is supported.
Decide by scenario
You have a mixed PS4 disc and digital library
A drive-equipped PS5 is the simplest current-console fit. It accommodates the physical part of the collection while allowing you to sign in and access eligible digital PS4 purchases. Verify the important games individually before selling the PS4 or discarding any original hardware.
You own only digital PS4 games
A PS5 can be a straightforward upgrade if the purchasing account is available and your key titles are listed as playable. A disc drive is not required for those digital entitlements, but buying one can preserve flexibility for future physical purchases.
You own a large PS3 disc collection
Do not select a PS5 on the assumption that it will replace the PS3. Keep or obtain compatible PS3 hardware for the discs, and separately check whether the games you care about appear in the regional Premium streaming catalog.
You want a few famous older games, not a whole collection
Start with the exact game listings. If a title is offered through Premium streaming and your connection is suitable, a subscription may be less hardware-intensive than finding an original console. If it is not listed, the subscription does not solve the problem; investigate a supported release or compatible original hardware instead.
You collect discs and care about long-term access
Prefer hardware that reads the discs you own and keep records of the console models that support them. Catalog streaming can be convenient, but its membership and availability requirements make it a poor substitute for a physical collection you want to preserve independently.
Final checklist before purchase
- Have you written down the exact older games you want to play?
- Have you marked each one as PS4, PS3, PS2 or PS1?
- Are your copies discs, digital purchases, or only catalog entitlements?
- If you own PS4 discs, does the chosen PS5 model include a disc drive?
- Have you checked every important title in Sony’s current compatibility guidance?
