How to Set Up a PS5 for the Best Picture and Sound

By VGSources Team 15 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The best PS5 picture and sound usually come from correct settings and a clean signal path, not from buying new equipment. First check what resolution, HDR, refresh rate and VRR your console and display are actually negotiating. Then configure HDR, audio output and optional 3D audio for the equipment you already use.

Connect the PS5 directly to the display while troubleshooting, use the included HDMI cable when possible, and treat every receiver, soundbar, switch or capture device between the console and screen as another possible limit. The menu names below match current PS5 support guidance, although system-software updates can change their placement.

Start by checking the signal your PS5 is really sending

Before changing individual options, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. The Current Video Output Signal area shows the active resolution, refresh rate, HDR state and related output information. The connected HDMI-device information also reports capabilities such as supported resolution, VRR and HDR. This is more reliable than assuming a television’s marketing label or a game’s graphics menu means the console is currently outputting that feature. See PlayStation’s resolution and video-output guide.

Read this panel after every significant change. For example, enabling VRR may work at one refresh rate but not another, and adding a soundbar or receiver can change the capabilities the PS5 sees. The panel tells you whether the console and the connected HDMI chain have actually agreed on a mode; it does not merely list what the television could support under ideal conditions.

For an ordinary setup, leave Resolution on Automatic. The PS5 detects the display’s capabilities and selects the highest available resolution. Choose 2160p manually only when you are deliberately setting 4K on a compatible display and need to test a particular combination. A manual value cannot make a display, cable or intermediary support a mode it does not provide.

Check the physical connection first

  • For diagnosis, connect the PS5 directly to a compatible HDMI input on the TV or monitor.
  • Use the HDMI cable supplied with the console. If it is unavailable or you need a replacement, use an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable rated for 4K at 120 Hz; do not buy one merely because the television is labeled 4K.
  • If the signal passes through an AV receiver, soundbar, HDMI switch or capture device, check that device’s input and output specifications and firmware. Its ports can restrict resolution, HDR, VRR or 120 Hz even when the TV and PS5 support them.

Once the direct connection works, add intermediary equipment back one piece at a time. That identifies whether the limitation is the console, display, cable or another HDMI device. Keep notes about which HDMI port and television mode worked; this avoids repeating the same tests after reconnecting the system.

Set the PS5 picture output

1. Leave resolution automatic unless you are testing 4K

In Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output, confirm Resolution: Automatic for normal use. The console will select the highest mode the connected chain advertises. If you specifically need to test 4K, select 2160p, then return to the Current Video Output Signal panel to verify what was negotiated.

The PS5 also has a 1440p output test. On a display that supports it, the test checks 1440p across SDR and HDR, 60 Hz and 120 Hz, and VRR combinations. It is useful for a 1440p monitor or for finding which combinations a display accepts, but it does not upgrade a panel’s native capabilities. If one test fails, that does not necessarily mean every 1440p mode fails; inspect the individual results and then choose the stable combination your display supports.

2. Turn on 120 Hz, VRR and low-latency switching when the whole chain supports them

Enable 120 Hz Output when the display and the game both support 120 Hz. A 120 Hz-capable screen alone is not enough: the title must offer an appropriate 120 Hz or performance mode, and the HDMI path must carry it. Enable VRR when the display supports it and you prefer its variable-refresh behavior. VRR results differ between television models, HDMI inputs and firmware versions, so confirm the resulting state in Current Video Output Signal and in a game that offers the feature.

ALLM can automatically switch a compatible television into its low-latency or game mode. The PS5 does not send an ALLM signal while a media application is running, so a TV may remain in its normal picture mode during streaming or disc playback. If the TV has its own game-mode setting, follow the display manufacturer’s instructions as well. Do not treat the absence of ALLM during video playback as a console fault.

When testing high-refresh output, change one variable at a time. First use a direct connection and the included cable, then enable 120 Hz, and finally test VRR. This makes it clear whether a problem is caused by the display’s high-refresh mode, variable refresh, an intermediary, or the game itself.

3. Choose an HDR policy and calibrate it

Go to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > HDR. The two main choices behave differently:

HDR setting What it does When to try it
On When Supported HDR-capable games and apps output HDR; unsupported content remains SDR. A sensible starting point when you want SDR content to stay SDR.
Always On The PS5 converts unsupported games and apps to HDR output. Use only if the converted result looks better to you on your display.

There is no universal winner because the result depends on the display and the content. After choosing a mode, select Adjust HDR and follow the on-screen calibration instructions. Make the adjustment while viewing the display in its normal gaming position and with any preferred display picture mode enabled. If you change the television’s picture mode later, inspect the same game again rather than assuming the prior adjustment still looks identical. Sony documents the menu behavior in its PS5 HDR guide.

Use the same scene or game when comparing the two HDR policies. Switching titles, television modes and console settings at the same time makes it impossible to tell whether a difference comes from HDR conversion or from the content itself. If unsupported SDR material looks unnaturally bright or its colors seem wrong with Always On, return to On When Supported.

4. Reduce transfer rate only when the image is unstable

If a 4K image flickers, drops out or repeatedly renegotiates, select Video Transfer Rate in the Video Output settings and try -1, then -2 if necessary. These settings reduce the combinations of resolution, refresh rate, color and HDR the console attempts to send. They can stop flicker, but they may also remove a desired output mode, so recheck Current Video Output Signal after each change. Return to Automatic when diagnosing a healthy connection or when you need the full set of available modes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Think of -1 and -2 as troubleshooting compromises, not picture-quality upgrades. If -1 eliminates flicker but removes 120 Hz or HDR, you have learned that the cable or HDMI path may be marginal at the original combination. Continue testing the direct connection, correct port and firmware rather than leaving a restricted setting permanently without checking what it costs.

Why 4K at 120 Hz is not appearing

4K/120 Hz is a chain capability, not a PS5-only switch. The TV, its selected HDMI port, firmware, cable, any receiver or switch, and the game must all support the required mode. Sony also notes that HDMI 2.1 behavior is not uniform across the market. Work through these checks in order:

  1. Confirm the display’s specification. Check that the exact TV or monitor model, not just the product family, claims 4K at 120 Hz. Some displays provide 120 Hz only on selected inputs or at lower resolutions.
  2. Update the display firmware. Firmware can affect HDMI 2.1, VRR and 120 Hz compatibility.
  3. Use the correct HDMI port. Plug the PS5 into the port identified by the display as supporting 4K/120 Hz or HDMI 2.1. If the TV has a setting such as an enhanced, high-bandwidth or gaming HDMI mode, enable the mode required by its own instructions.
  4. Use the included cable or a suitable replacement. The replacement should be an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable rated for 4K/120 Hz. A cable that works at 4K/60 Hz is not automatically suitable for 4K/120 Hz.
  5. Bypass intermediaries. Connect the PS5 directly to the TV or monitor. If 4K/120 Hz appears, the receiver, soundbar, switch or capture device is the bottleneck.
  6. Set the console for negotiation. Use Resolution: Automatic or test 2160p. During diagnosis, leave Video Transfer Rate: Automatic; use -1 or -2 only to address flicker or instability.
  7. Verify the game. A 120 Hz-capable display does not make every game render at 120 frames per second. The game’s own performance or 120 Hz option must support the mode.

After each change, return to Current Video Output Signal. If the display still reports 60 Hz, test another suitable HDMI port and the direct connection before assuming the PS5 is defective. Detailed checks are in Sony’s 4K and resolution troubleshooting guidance.

Configure PS5 sound for your equipment

1. Select the actual output device

Open Settings > Sound > Audio Output. Choose Output Device and select the device that should receive sound. The PS5 can switch automatically when a supported headset is connected; if that behavior is inconvenient, select the desired device manually and check it again after reconnecting the headset.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start with the path you use most often. If you alternate between TV speakers and headphones, test each path separately and confirm the Output Device after plugging in or removing the headset. A correct picture does not prove that audio is being routed to the intended device.

2. Match HDMI Device Type to the connection

Set HDMI Device Type to match the equipment connected to the console. If you select AV amplifier, the PS5 exposes controls for the amplifier’s channel count and speaker positions. Enter the channel count that the amplifier and speakers actually use, then adjust speaker positions so the console’s spatial processing reflects the room rather than an assumed layout.

Use Audio Format (Priority) to choose the preferred output format for games and video applications, but treat it as equipment-dependent. The available result depends on the connected TV, receiver, soundbar or headset. Some applications have their own audio options; Sony specifically notes that the disc player can use separate settings. If a format produces silence, distortion or missing channels, return to a compatible format and verify the HDMI Device Type before changing several options at once.

When an AV amplifier is selected, channel count and speaker positions matter as much as the format choice. Incorrect values can make a center channel, surround speaker or other location seem missing even when the amplifier is working. Confirm the physical speaker layout and the amplifier’s own input mode before judging the PS5 setting. The menu details are listed in PlayStation’s PS5 audio-output guide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Test the complete listening path

  • For TV speakers, set the TV as the output device and compare stereo with any available 3D-audio processing.
  • For headphones, make sure the selected output device changes when the headset is connected and that the headset’s own volume control is not muted.
  • For an AV amplifier, verify the console’s channel count, the amplifier’s input mode and the physical speaker connections before judging a surround format.

Set up 3D audio

3D audio through TV speakers

TV-speaker 3D audio uses the wireless controller’s built-in microphone to measure the room. Sit in your normal listening position, then go to Settings > Sound > 3D Audio (TV) and follow the measurement flow. Keep the controller where you normally hold it while listening so the measurement reflects the intended position.

After measurement, listen to the same game or scene with stereo and 3D audio. Sony explicitly recommends comparing them rather than assuming 3D is preferable for every room or television. Measure again if you move the TV, change the seating position or make a significant change to the room, because the acoustic relationship has changed. Instructions and troubleshooting are in Sony’s 3D-audio setup guide.

Room measurement is tied to the listening position, not to a permanent universal profile. If more than one person uses the TV from substantially different seats, compare the result from the seat you use most. A change in furniture, television placement or seating distance is a reason to repeat the measurement rather than simply increasing volume.

3D audio through headphones

For headphones, open Settings > Sound > 3D Audio (Headphones). You can create a personalized profile by following the prompts, or choose one of five preset settings. Compare the personalized profile and presets with a familiar game, then keep the setting that gives you the clearest positional cues without making dialogue or effects distracting. The choice is preference-dependent; it is not a measurement of headphone quality.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the setup that fits your listening path

Path Controls you should configure What to compare
TV speakers Output Device, HDMI Device Type, Audio Format (Priority), 3D Audio (TV) Stereo versus measured 3D audio from your normal seat.
Headphones Output Device, automatic switching, 3D Audio (Headphones) Personalized profile versus the five presets, using familiar content.
AV amplifier and speakers Output Device, HDMI Device Type set to AV amplifier, channel count, speaker positions and Audio Format (Priority) Correct channel mapping and a format the amplifier supports.

These paths are not ranked. TV speakers, headphones and an amplifier expose different controls and suit different rooms, seating positions and preferences. Configure the path you actually use rather than enabling every feature in the hope that more processing will always sound better.

A ten-minute baseline setup

  1. Connect the PS5 directly to the display with the included HDMI cable.
  2. Open Video Output and record the Current Video Output Signal and connected-device capabilities.
  3. Leave Resolution and Video Transfer Rate on Automatic.
  4. Enable 120 Hz Output and VRR only if the display and the game support them.
  5. Set HDR to On When Supported, run Adjust HDR, and compare the result with a familiar game.
  6. Open Audio Output, select the intended Output Device and match HDMI Device Type.
  7. If using an amplifier, enter its real channel count and speaker positions.
  8. Measure TV-speaker 3D audio from the normal seat, or create a headphone profile; then compare the result with stereo or the presets.
  9. Add a receiver, soundbar or switch back only after the direct setup is stable, checking Current Video Output Signal each time.

This sequence establishes a known-good baseline. It also prevents a common mistake: changing HDR, refresh rate, transfer rate, audio format and intermediary hardware together, then having no way to identify which change solved or caused a problem.

A practical troubleshooting checklist

If the picture is black, flickering or unexpectedly low-resolution

  • Read Current Video Output Signal instead of relying on the TV’s input label.
  • Reconnect the included HDMI cable and test a different supported HDMI port.
  • Remove receivers, switches, soundbars and capture devices temporarily.
  • Confirm the display firmware is current and that any enhanced HDMI mode is enabled.
  • Leave Resolution on Automatic and Video Transfer Rate on Automatic while testing.
  • If 4K flickers, try Video Transfer Rate -1, then -2, and check which resolution, HDR and refresh-rate combinations remain available.

If 4K/120 Hz is missing but 4K/60 Hz works

  • Verify that the exact HDMI input supports 4K/120 Hz, not merely 4K.
  • Use the included cable or an Ultra High Speed HDMI replacement rated for 4K/120 Hz.
  • Bypass every intermediary and update the display firmware.
  • Check the game’s own 120 Hz or performance option.
  • Keep Video Transfer Rate on Automatic while diagnosing; lowering it can hide the mode you are trying to test.

If HDR looks washed out or inconsistent

  • Check whether HDR is set to On When Supported or Always On; the latter converts SDR content.
  • Run Adjust HDR again from the Video Output menu.
  • Compare the same game or video with the display’s normal picture mode and its HDR picture mode.
  • Verify that an intermediary device has not removed HDR from the signal.

If sound is missing or the surround layout is wrong

  • Confirm Output Device after connecting or disconnecting a headset.
  • Set HDMI Device Type to the equipment actually connected.
  • For an AV amplifier, recheck channel count and speaker positions.
  • Try a format supported by the connected equipment in Audio Format (Priority).
  • Check the application’s own audio menu, particularly when using the disc player.

If 3D audio sounds worse

  • For TV speakers, repeat the room measurement from the usual listening position.
  • Compare the same scene in stereo and 3D audio; either can be the better choice for a particular room.
  • For headphones, compare the personalized profile with each of the five presets.
  • Measure again after moving the TV, seating or substantial room furnishings.

What to change—and what not to buy

Most owners can optimize an existing PS5, display and audio system with the settings above. A new television, receiver, headset or amplifier is not a prerequisite for correct setup. Consider buying a cable only when the included cable is missing, damaged or needs to be replaced during signal-path troubleshooting. If you do buy one, match the specification—an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable rated for 4K/120 Hz—rather than paying for an unsupported performance claim.

Why is my PS5 not showing 4K at 120 Hz?

Check the exact display model, firmware and HDMI port; use the included cable or an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable rated for 4K/120 Hz; bypass receivers, soundbars and switches; and verify the game’s 120 Hz option. Keep Video Transfer Rate on Automatic while diagnosing and confirm the result in Current Video Output Signal.

Should PS5 HDR be On When Supported or Always On?

On When Supported leaves unsupported games and apps in SDR and is a sensible starting point. Always On converts unsupported content to HDR. Compare the same content on your display and keep the mode that looks better; there is no universal winner.

How do I turn on 3D audio on PS5?

For TV speakers, open Settings > Sound > 3D Audio (TV), sit in the normal listening position and follow the controller-microphone measurement. For headphones, open Settings > Sound > 3D Audio (Headphones) and create a personalized profile or choose one of five presets.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does the PS5 need a new HDMI cable for 4K/120 Hz?

Not necessarily. Use the included PS5 cable first. Buy an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable rated for 4K/120 Hz only if the included cable is unavailable, damaged or part of a signal-path troubleshooting test.

What does Video Transfer Rate -1 or -2 do?

Those settings reduce the combinations of resolution, refresh rate, color and HDR the PS5 attempts to send. They can help stop 4K flicker or dropouts, but may remove a desired mode. Recheck Current Video Output Signal and return to Automatic when the connection is stable.

Why does my PS5 sound come from the wrong device?

Open Settings > Sound > Audio Output and check Output Device, especially after connecting a headset. Match HDMI Device Type to the connected equipment. If using an AV amplifier, verify channel count, speaker positions and Audio Format (Priority), and check the application’s own audio settings.

The Bottom Line

For the best PS5 setup, verify the negotiated signal before changing anything, use a direct connection during testing, and leave automatic settings in control unless you have a specific reason to override them. Set HDR to match your content preference, enable 120 Hz or VRR only across a compatible chain, and configure sound for the device you actually hear. Measure 3D audio from your normal seat, compare it with stereo or the headphone presets, and buy a cable only when the existing one or signal path genuinely requires replacement.
